Interesting review! I have a big, six hour indoor dance event to shoot next weekend and I considered using my new 70-180 2.8 lens for this, but Becky mentioned the fact that it doesn't focus as fast as the 70-200 2.8. I will be shooting a local celebrity dance performance while the other photographer will photograph the VIPs. In low light, I set the aperture at f/2.8 in aperture priority or manual to capture the fast action with good results. I am 72 and in good shape for my age, but my 70-200 and 24-70mm is heavy and bulky. My 70-180 and 28-75mm would make things easier for me, but I haven't used these for stage or for events yet. I am not allowed to use my speedlights for live dance because it might temporarily blind the dancers and be distracting for the audience. The event hall is huge and setting up remote speedlights with a flash trigger would be cumbersome to set up in this hectic venue. I will probably err to the side of caution and use my 24-70 and 70-200 combo until I further test out the 70-180 indoors. The 70-180 outdoors, using speedlights for portraits it is fine. Much easier to carry on events than the 70-200 . A blessing for me. Add a Raynox dcr 250 and you will get close focus at 180mm (1x) for a fraction of the price of a teleconverter and still at 2.8 with better quality

I am used to take the shoot of wildlife with my Kase landscape filters set, good for me to control the light outdoors.

Awfully kind of you Kon to let Becky try to master a new skill of flower photography.🤣 But in Becky’s defense I also will shoot wildflowers around here. I would think about getting that if I didn’t have the 70-200 f/2.8 S lens and I have a 2x tele also to use for wildlife here. I used the 70-200 during the Iditarod this year. The cold slowed it down quite a bit so I shot manually which wasn’t a issue for me. Thanks for sharing with us! Have a great week the both of you. 📷☕️

I understand this lens lacks VR? Is in camera stabilisation enough or are you missing the additional lens VR ?

I have been using this lens the past week for macro shooting at the gardens and have gotten very good results. The 70mm let’s you get quite close and the bokeh is very good. Thanks for the review.

get the raynox dcr 250 and you will get much closer, specially at 180, with no quality loss

@@carlosandreviana9448 thanks. I have some Hoya macro filters that do a great job too and when I’m traveling those filters with this lens is going to be a great option to my heavier lenses.

Thanks for the interesting and pretty fair review. At today’s UK online stock prices the Nikon Z 70‑200mm f/2.8 is 56%, more expensive and, without the lens collar, 71% heavier, so likely to be the better choice for many but not all use cases.

Thanks for doing these field trip videos. It would be fun to walk around with you two and talk photography. This lens seems like a nice finish to the non-S trinity. I have the 24-120 and am hoping the 135 will take teleconverters. I’m thinking a 135 and two teleconverters will add the reach I want in a smaller package than the 70-200.

You're going to noticeably soften that image with 2 TC's, IMO you'd be better off with the 400 4.5. Or 100-400.

@@csc-photo Thanks. I don’t mean two at once. The 1.4 would make it a 189mm f2 and the 2x a 270mm f2.5. The Z 2x works quite well in my experience.

To me a 70-180 is a very different lens from a 70-300. I appreciate that for some it might replace it but I’d miss about 120mm of focal range. A TC could partially solve this. But if it’s already “reasonably sharp” without a TC, I’m not sure I want to go there. The tele end is still keeping me with my D750 for now. I know the Tamron 70-300 is an option, but that’s not as good as the Nikon AF-P 70-300 for DSLR.

After Tamrons latest development announcement I am a little more confused on what to get ... This lens looks really good. And 180 is not far from 200mm ... But, 150 is not far from 180, and 120 is not far from 150 ... On the other end, 24 is not so far from 35 ... but 35 is far from 70 ... I have the 24-200, but sometimes the 6,3 is not good enough.

Thanks for the video! This looks to be the only Z mount replacement for the Nikon 70-200 f4. I think that many photographers that have that lens will be looking at this one. If you could you compare it also to the f4 lens it would be great.

Its good , macro lenses when i was young was a fault in the lens es build , and marketed as semi macro lenses 😃, totallt true tamron made certain lenses that focussed very close , only by flaw in the build ! 1980s
