Not a true scientific test but a good test to give a useful indication. Thank you.

Thanks for the great review. The only time that you'll get an upward force is if your in storm mode and get a gust under the tarp lifting the edges but I get where your coming from. The MSR Groundhog's has served me well even in really rocky (mountainous) terrain. Tip- I attach my guy lines to the tarp with a plastic hook connected to some 3/32nd shock cord from Dutch so that I can disconnect them and leave the Zing-It guy lines on the ground pointing to the pegs. That allows me to put the tarp back into the sleeve out of the way and deploy quickly in in-climate weather. It also keeps me from loosing my pegs.

Bigger surface area more holding power it’s really that simple . The rest is about weight . A pull test needs to be at 45 degrees as that is the holding power you are looking for. The alloy flat is single directional peg and will hold in more rocky ground. As for seeing pegs start at one point and remove sequentially , never lost a peg yet after 40 years of camping.

The pull test is somewhat flawed. In the real world tent stakes aren't driven in vertically and the tension is not vertical. Stakes are best set at an angle of roughly 45 degrees and the pull comes from a side angle. The nail and standard style stakes don't hold nearly as well in real world conditions. I haven't used all these specific stakes, but I've used many like them and the V and Y style hold the best. The MSR Groundhog is the best tent stake I've ever used. The "standard " tent pegs bend the second they hit a rock. I have bags of them bent in all sorts of shapes after trying to drive them into rocky soil.

+Brian Sniatkowski Hi Brian, thanks for the comment. Totally agree on the test, should have tested at 45 degrees, but it's still relatively at 90 to how they should perform so not all bad :) +1 For the MSR Groundhog!

With your cheapo steel stakes that come with your tent, put a roundish point on them with a grinder or file and they'll negotiate rocks better.

+James edwards Outdoors Worth a look as you can shave a good amount of weight from your load-out. The Y tent steaks are pretty awesome at not bending!

+Gordon's Great Outdoors i dont often tent camp now, but the last time i did i had to change locations while it was dark, i had picked a spot just of a farm track, it was hidden from the track so i thought it would be great to set up my small tent,,,however when i got there just as it was getting dark,,i could not get the tent pegs in anywhere,,so i had to go elsewhere.

Impressive and thorough! I had absolutely no idea all there was to consider in tent pegs! Question: Why not just take along the strongest of tent pegs to handle every scenario? Is there some advantage in having an overall lighter weight peg (in terms of its full range as shown here) than one that is sort of 'all terrain' in its function? (understanding they don't all work well for the cook stove you mentioned of course.)

+Brenda Taylor It's all about the weight really. When you're looking at going light you want the most effective for your weight. It's not going to break your back having the biggest and strongest pegs, but it's just one of the areas where you can shave a good amount of weight if that's what you're looking for. I've got some pegs that each weigh what 12 of my lightweight ones weigh, and are very similar in performance in most grounds.

Another thing to consider is that some of these stakes are fairly useless with a tent because the V- or Y-shapes won't fit through the grommets. Those end up being more useful with items like rain flies that have some sort of loop. I loaded up on heavy nail-like stakes that ended up being so sharp I had to get a rugged utility bag to put them in so they wouldn't puncture things around them in storage, but now I want to hike light and that's an obvious place to drop weight. But, since stakes like the MSR Ground Hogs will likely only be of minimal use with my next tent, I'm still going to have to pack some of those heavy-ass nails. Maybe I can cork the tips. :)

I am in the market for some tent pegs, so I enjoyed your video. Quick question. Did you place each peg in straight when testing the pull out? I was always under the impression that pegs should be driven at a 45 angle towards your shelter. I wonder how that would effect those weight scores. Imagine the nail type pegs would have done a bit better than they did when pulled straight. Thanks again for the video... must have taken some time.

My Dad Sucks At Video Games Glad it helped you :) Yes I did put them in straight to make it a fair test. I figured you'd get similar results for each peg at an angle (each peg would be a percentage better/worse whilst at an angle). I know you'd get much more pull from each peg at a certain angle, but they'd perform relative to a straight pull so the experiment is still valid. I was trying to show how much better/worse each peg would perform at a given pull, not how much pull each could take. So for example, the Y pegs would still perform much better than nail peg at any given angle as it's all about surface area. Do you follow me? Kind of hard to explain what I mean :)

Shouldve put all the pegs in the ground at once in different spots- a. Shorter video. b. The soil just kept getting looser with every stake in that 1 spot

Hi Gordon, have you seen these swiss piranha pegs? www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/equipment-c3/tents-shelters-c25/tent-accessories-c33/tent-pegs-c314/rt90-tent-pegs-p6611 Quite a lot of holding power at 3 gr. I would think. Has anyone used these?

Honestly, That was a completely useless review! The whole point is how they perform under normal circumstances. Pulling them straight out of the ground is really really a waste of time. Lengths and bend would test much more in the real world under normal operating circumstances. NOBODY USES THEM STRAIGHT INTO THE GROUND!

+Opsycho Opsycho I understand the pull test wasn't the best, but it's relative to (mostly) how they perform at an angle. I wouldn't try to guess the pressure people would put them under in a real scenario so it was a comparison between them all so you could judge for yourself. I think it's informative but the pull test could have been better. Thanks for your comment.

We are not talking about kettles or irons here. This is about outdoor gear and a review that is badly done can influence people to make a poor choice that can have serious consequences with wilderness pursuits. Some people are concerned only with getting views, especially the ones whose uploads are monetised.

I get what your saying, but I quite liked this 'quick and dirty' peg demo. The premise of this seems pretty sound, i.e. Thin pegs without cross sections will tear out first. Likewise shorter vs longer. The pull weight was an interesting indicator of what to expect. The bend test wasn't of much value though.
