More than 50 years ago, the Tibetan Bön Buddhist tradition was driven from its refuge deep within the Himalayas. This is the story of the long and difficult journey that followed. Told through the lens of one Bön teacher born in exile-Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche-this film reveals something very precious and very old: a rich spiritual heritage, hidden for millennia, whose secret teachings are only now becoming known to the world. There may be no unbroken spiritual tradition more ancient than Bön, which traces its beginnings to a buddha who predates Shakyamuni by thousands of years. Yet this tradition today may be facing its greatest challenge thus far: to preserve its rich heritage beyond the land of its birth.
A film by Rogelio Jaramillo Flores. Produced by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche.

“The Light of the Golden Sun provides a beautiful and inspiring insight into Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and his challenges in bringing the wisdom of Bön to the West. It clearly shares that light through the people who helped manifest his vision and who are benefiting from the transformative practices of this ancient tradition.”
-John Jackson
“The Bön texts are thousands of years old, and I am sure that not even 7 percent of what is still in monasteries, libraries and caves has been translated. Even without taking into consideration the spiritual aspect, Bön should be preserved as a treasure for humanity just for its cultural aspect.”
-Anne Klein

Gracias por luchar, preservar y compartir la tradición Bön, que nos acerca al autoconocimiento y a la autorealización de una manera tan natural. Thank you for all the struggle on preserving and sharing the Bön tradition, which bring us closer to the knowledge of oneself and self-realization in such a natural way.

My deepest gratitude for this treasure reaching me in a period of a profound soul retrieval of my Bön past life as a Bönpo. I cried thousands of tears and could so much understand all the tears you all had in Tibet. It is still whirling within me ... again I surrender and feel the bliss of Bön, which is somehow unique and incomparable with any other spiritual path in the world. It often appears to me as something from the very beginning of time and space. Thanks from all my heart !!!! Dasho

Interesting story about the Mexican boy. I thought things like that only happened in "Little Buddha" and it must be very rare that a llama reincarnate in a non-Tibetan body?

I donot understant what kind of bhonbo religion is? Some said they are like aborigine, tribes religion but they are praying buddha. Before 2560 yrs "before buddhism" all neplese tribes and aborigines has one religion their god was nature like river, big tree, big rock, sun and fire. They doesnot have perticular god like buddha, siva, vishnu, jesus, allaha, etc. Even in mongolia has no perticular god they believe in nature, they pray for sun, fire, rock ,big trees ,river.

I don't really think Bön is philosophically that different from the teachings of the Shakyamunibuddha ; it's just that the specific school of Tibetan Buddhism that the Dalai Lama teaches is connected to Theravada Buddhism which started outside of Tibet and came in later on; but of course the ideas and beliefs that Shakyamunibuddha taught are much older and have been around in India and Tibet for a very long time before the Pali scriptures narrating the Buddha's life came to Tibet. I would think that the difference is more in the practices and traditions than the philosophy and beliefs. By the way, in Mongolia there is a god worshipped called Tengri; but not everyone worships him because he doesn't demand worship the way the god of the Abrahamic religions typically does.

Lopon taught us well-Tenzin Wangyal taught us that a jerk who does not walk the talk nor maybe not even understanding the situation can coop attention and through hubris and ignorance and a gold shirt set himself up as an authority and is here to "help"-while helping himself hopefully Lopon will bring him back to the monastery and prevent him from preying on the west-do the research talk to people that grew up with him
