He used to play at a small venue in Leeds UK in the 70's, and saw him a couple of times there. He IS Sooo underrated, not only a great singer, guitarist and performer, but also as a Gymnast..... Seeing him play whilst doing a flip onto stage off a trampette was amazing.

He formed the band grin in 68 and met neil young while young played at dc's the cellar door. He played on youngs after the gold rush and had a long relationship with neil. I have never figured why he has never made it big on his own. Grins first 4 albums were great, but hr supplemented young, Springsteen , and crazy horse. A great career for sure , i guess writing , radio play , and studio push makes stars. Niks is and has always been crazy talented.

When I was sophomore in high school some 44 years ago now, a friend played the Grin album for me and I heard the song Like Rain and almost cried it was so beautiful. I wore a picture of Nils that I had made into a button on my jean jacket. This was before his solo album. Springsteen was also one of my favorites (saw him in concert before Born to Run made him "famous"). And, finally, I played this song by Neil in college over and over and over. When I learned to play guitar in high school and college, Nils, Bruce and Neil (and Jesse Colin Young) were among my very favorite artists. Enjoy your youth, young ones, time is fleeting.

@joergseligmann897910 жыл бұрын
If he was not awesome he would not play with Bruce. Every musician playing in the E-Street Band is a real master. And Nils made lots of nice albums. And he created his own style of playing guitar. Even his acoustic guitar solo is special. Nils' style of phrasing and bending. Somewhere between spanish style, jazz and blues. Great - and unique
@claesgoer5 жыл бұрын
Yes-and in addition not many got to play with Crazy Horse! Playing with the E Street Band is however the greatest a rock and roll musician can aspire to and achieve. Bruce only takes the best there are! And then sticks with them-promoting and nurturing them!

That little touch of "something extra" in the solo piece is called pinch harmonics. Nils (along with Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton) is a true master of the style, which can be heard throughout his career. His solo stuff just has so much more variety than his collaborative work with others. If I had to name the 5 best living guitarists, Nils would probably be on that list. Many thanks for this, and all of Nils' contributions.
@peach4953 жыл бұрын
I know of no other artist that can incorporate pinch harmonics within a blistering fast guitar riff as Lofgren does. Including both of the masters you cited.

What a truly great version of this song! What's just as remarkable is that it doesn't override the source material with virtuosity, but instead digs deep and reveals with simplicity and clearly etched lines just how great this song always was. Lofgren is like an archeologist uncovering a temple buried beneath the words. Those refrains right at the end seem especially hair raising to me, as he confronts you with and makes you FEEL the song's central image, the "hurricane" of "calm."

Thanks for an incomparable treat LucasRoy49. Stuff this good I tend to listen to for hours at a time on repeat. If the entire album is worthy, then I might listen to nothing else for a weeks, so I can play them in my mind at will. (Led Zeppelin, Santana) I somehow lost my music file for this one, have been playing it in my head all morning, but always had trouble around 5:31 to 5:58, so had to brush up. :-D This arrangement is incredible, so to hear people comparing it to Neil Young makes me wanna listen to *more* than the one, faster tempo version of Neil's I have heard. What a treat that would be for me to find comparable acoustical and vocal excellence. For me, this blows the Neil Young version that I heard away like a hurricane, but I am gonna go listen to some more right now!...well, after I listen to this again...

I've been noticing on "signature" songs where the best of the best record their interpretation.....THAT THIS ONE, this Nils guy, MORE THAN DOING his own "ELECTRIFYING PIECE WITH HIS STRAT" he sneaks in withe the acoustic- Paul Rodgers asked him to do some hard rockers -acoustic! We have known him as a top ten electric guitarist in every category, unique style, tones, twists and turns in his interpretations, speed-never abused but on tap- do not mess with him, unless your name was a healthy Glen Campbell. Let's face it, from a weaker hand, that happens in life, he had to go with Springsteen, just no comment. SO!!! what a great call to make your mark acoustically as always his voice matches the tone of the guitar. Out of the blue I t am thinking of a duo on this particular song and that would be the getting older Jose Feliciano- I know some of his are over the top, but his Thrill is gone, and for some reason HURRICANE X2 would be forever. It has been 43 years since my privilege seeing you at Georgetown Mr. Lofgren, because of Grin I was able to hold on to sanity as it appeared that it was Dicky Betts pickin to drive me to the dark side. A rotten peach.

Yes, this is a fantastic performance, and thank you for sharing this video. A few years ago Nils was invited to the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion (or Wolf Trap?) by Carlos Santana to play a solo.... he scorched, ignited, and otherwise smoldered. I got a strong sense that 98% of the audience had NO idea what was going to come out of Nils' guitar..... I was one of 'em :) Much awe-inspiration in Nils' talent and yet so understated.
