"Sono malato" is used for masculine subjects, while "sono malata" is the correct form for feminine subjects. The past participle of "essere" (to be) in this case must agree with the gender and number of the subject. Therefore, if the subject is feminine, the adjective "malato" must take the feminine ending "-a." The original sentence contains a grammatical error.
