Pool Lesson: The Ghost Ball

A correction on the average size of a cue ball. It turns out that 2 3/8" is the average size of a coin operated table. This is actually 1/8" larger than a non-coin operated table. This makes the average size of a cue ball 2 1/4". This still makes pulling the tip of the cue back about an inch (1.125" to be precise) from the object ball to locate the center of the ghost ball.

I think you mean the size of the oversized cueball on old coin-op tables. On those tables the object balls are 2.25". There are almost none of those tables still in use where an oversized CB is in use. Most tables now use 2.25" balls regardless of whether the table is coin operated or not.

This is a great video that addresses an error that many shooters make on where to contact the cue ball. Correction on cue ball diameter - it is 2 ¼. So placing the tip of the cue stick about an inch away from the object ball works fine. I use this technique a lot. I have also been learning to visualize the 1" point by standing behind the object ball in line with the pocket. And then holding that visualization point as I line up the shot. I think that is the final step of the ghost ball technique but admittedly it takes a lot of practice. Once mastered, it works great. Thanks for your video.

Regardless of any difference in the ball size, I have watched a lot of videos in my attempts to discover an aiming technique that works for me. Although I won't get the chance to try this method until later tonight, I believe this explanation in the best I've seen. Why? Because it is the only one I've seen that takes the ball size into consideration when explained. I can't "see" a ghost ball when I'm executing a shot, but I can definitely estimate 1 1/8" from the center line of an object ball. I honestly believe this technique will improve my game immensely. That will come when I publish a video on “throw”. For the most part, the throw, in my opinion, doesn’t really affect the ghost ball that much if there’s room to cheat the pocket. However, you are correct that you do have to account for it. It’s just very little if you’re spot on the Ghost Ball.

Hi Chris, thank you very much for this quality upload. It makes the ghost ball method much more understandable, even for a beginner. I used to play Snooker for 15 years and i was good enough to play well against the better players across the land. But I never used any aiming method. I just used my natural feeling. But since I stopped playing snooker for years now, I don't have a base to fall upon. So I'm looking for a good base to get myself going again. Since you explained this ghost ball method so well, I think I'm going to practice a bit on it. Could I ask you a question please ? What do you think about the "splitting the difference" method ? To me it looks good, and I can easy understand this without confusing myself. Even if I'm back to beginner level.

I use the ghost ball method and it works very well for me. Recently I saw Chris' CTE videos and I prefer to use this method for sharp cuts where I am looking away from the pocket. Seems like I am a little more consistent on those types of shots using CTE. And by the way, After seeing his CTE video, it was the first time I really understood the method. Lil Chris videos are the clearest and most understandable videos I have seen. He does not veer off on a tangent explaining useless details trying to show how knowledgeable he is. He sticks to the key elements you need to know to understand the methods.

The ghost ball aiming system is a great basically fool proof system, but it is so hard for me to see for some reason. I keep working on it, but visualizing the ghost ball has been hard for me to grasp. I don't have a table, so I don't get to practice as mush as I would like. I do play in a league and usually play for an hour so for practice before the league starts each week.

If the ghost ball has been difficult for you to visualize, try placing the tip of you cue about an inch away from the contact spot on the object ball (like I illustrated in the video). That will give you the center of the ghost ball and give you something to aim at.

Yeah, as with anything it just takes time and practice and things become easier. I've been told by some that the method I use is too complex and others tell me how simple it is to learn it. To each their own. The method I use is not the only method I know, but in my opinion I find it to be the easiest (for me) and most accurate.

When aiming (CTE) at point A or B do you still pick a point on the table to roll the CB through, as the center of the CB would pass through the OB at either halfway (A) or at the right edge(B) of the OB? Contact point of (C) would have the center of CB an "airball" and use the point on the table for (C) or (1/8) hit. Basically do you always shoot at the point on the table? Thank you

The idea of CTE is that you are shooting not at a point on the table, but at a point on the objective ball.

When aiming, using GB, After you pull your cue back the inch , do you now use the center of the shaft pointed directly at that point ? Or Do you use the side of the shaft that the cut is too ? Such as R cut, Right side of shaft aimed at that point.

After you pull your cue back about an inch, the tip of your cue shows where the center of the GB would be. It doesn’t matter if it’s a straight shot or a cut shot.

the gb method works great for me on most shots. where it starts to become challenging is on long shots with angle -- i tend to lose the ability to stay focused and see my aiming point on the table when it is far down table. Do you find the same issue and, if so, how do you adjust/compensate?

Not so much. When the object is that far away and I'm not able to rotate my cue back over the cue ball to line up, I literally focus directly on the center of the GB spot as I walk back to the cue ball.

I heared, that cue ball can push object ball (especially if the object ball is further from the pocket) a little in its own direction, and therefore it is suitable to correct it with a little outer english. Is it correct ?

The speed of the cue ball only really matters with how far the cue ball has to travel to hit the object ball, and how far the object has to travel to make it into a pocket, and then how far you want to the cue ball to roll after contact.
