A little later than originally billed! The Lilliputters Christmas outing this year took place around the Dockland’s area of London, featuring 4 towers: Stepney - St Dunstan, Bow Church, Isle of Dogs and Lewisham.
It was lovely to catch up with the rest of group and we welcomed a couple of new members. We also had an obligatory ride on the DLR (sadly no front seat apart from a lucky few) and welcome Christmas pub visits, for a few hours at a time.
Stepney, St Dunstan's has an old fashioned 29cwt 10, with plenty of grunt to them, sound good both inside and outside, a little oddstruck and short draft, but very ringable. Apologies for view during the lower, there is plenty more entertainment in the background. Plenty of rounds and call changes and some plain hunt on 9 were the tunes here.
Bow were rather the opposite, the church based in the middle of the road with a rather lovely entrance and walkway up to the church, adorned with some curved arches on the approach. The bells are a decent 14cwt 8 which go well, very ringable just with some flighty trebles and lots of oddstruckness around the circle. A respectable attempt at Cambridge Major was rung, as well as a couple of courses of Grandsire Triples.
Next stop was an hour or two for lunch, where else apart from Spoons just north of the Isle of Dogs, where we held our annual Secret Santa.
After lunch, and short walk underneath the Thames, our venue for the hour was the Isle of Dogs, a relatively light 8, where we had our obligatory attempts at rounds, backrounds, queens, rung quite respectably and some jump changes called by one our newer ringers.
Our final venue for the day was Lewisham, almost too close to the A20 for comfort, in the dark, drizzle, cold and wind (however much I prefer this style of weather to long, hot summers, grass fires and drought). They are an old, heavy 8 which take some work particularly around the back. Yorkshire and plain hunt on 8 was rung successfully.
