My mom grew up in Hawaii until she was 9 years old, but my great great grandma came to Hawaii from Okinawa at the turn of the 1900s. She raised me like a Hawaiian. Nani was my Disney princess for a long time. She looked like me and my cousins. I still love the only Disney movies that show a way of life not many people get to see. Mahalo nui loa Disney!!❤

I was fortunate enough to be part of Kumu Mark's halau when they came and made the film of our Wahine dancing" Kalakaua He Inoa". We got to see the early rushes. It was a very thrilling time formHula dancers and for Hawaiians. To this day keiki are dancing this traditional dance. Kumu actually wrote Hawaiian Roller Coaster too. Over the beginning credits is the traditional chant to Liliuokalani, the last queen. The man who plays the kumu is Kanewa Mook, one of the finest Kumu in Hawaii and consistently a winner of Merrie Monarch Festival. Oakland CA 2022

They actually were very strict on the message they let the directors give on movies and this was an experimentation time for disney and after this movie they fired one or both of the directors because jon lassiter hated him and was angry the movie did so well

A know a lot of indigenous Hawaiian, Polynesian and other South Pacific Islander peoples feel disrespected by all of this, but I'm 100% Roma and adopted from Eastern Europe and I have to deal with Stromboli and Esmeralda. I'd take this over people thinking my characters are Black, Mexican or (Ashkenazi) Jewish. I'd rather have my culture embraced than deal with racist sterotypes and plots that fail to explain our actual Browness and the depth of our oppression.
