I think it was a really wholesome gag where they had the dumb character freak out over twins not being identical but completely understanding and accepting of trans people, there weren’t any jokes about “not being able to understand it” implying that it really is that simple

@@GayLuigi333what makes it even more obvious to me that she’s written to be a trans allegory is that she prefers to be called Jenny. It makes her happier than her given name (model number) and her mom refuses to call her Jenny. There’s a whole episode where she wants to be a “real girl” and it completely destroys her. She end up putting on a literal costume and gets consumed by anxiety. It’s very obvious looking back lol

Good for Danger Force having such great representation. Having the trans boy be aware of the different buttons as a clue is a very clever way of working it into the story and making it feel natural. Also, a pair of identical twins where one is cis and the other transitioned would be perfect casting for a production of Twelfth Night.

Part of the reason, besides the servant help thing, was swords (wielded mostly by men) tend to assume a right-handed user drawing weapons from their left hip. So the buttons being on the right keeps the shirt/jacket flap edge out of the way of a smooth blade drawing motion. Which I think is also part of why robe like clothes like Japanese kimono/gis are also worn with the left flap going over the right, though that seems to be both for men and women.

Not surprised that this show had a legit trans episode. Progress in children entertainment always first comes in a low budget sitcom, then goes into animated fare (in fact Ive heard Disney is making a cartoon with a trans main character), before arriving at the stuff the executives actually view as important.
@AbsolXGuardian
@AbsolXGuardian 4 ай бұрын
I can totally second that you get mainstream representation in stuff the executives only care turn a profit in a spreadsheet instead of personally getting involved to do what they think will maximize profit or involve their own bigotry. Star Wars recently put out a middle grade book featuring two trans kids and two gay kids as main characters, with a queer romantic subplot (by the standards of romantic subplots in middle grade novels). And star wars books and comics have become full of queer representation. But on the screen, it's barely there
@billionai4871
@billionai4871 4 ай бұрын
progress coming first in kids stuff is really ironic since that's where a lot of the moral panic comes from but when you look at the actions they don't support the "think of the children" story. I totally believe you in it, but its a funny and easy way to show the hypocrisy, AND it has a chance to reach them before they internalize the hate, which is always a good thing

The button thing is most likely because wealthy women in the Renaissance would have dressers where wealthy men would dress themselves. With right-handedness being more common and/or forced on people, it was easier to put the buttons on the side where the person doing them up would use their right hand. And for some reason that stuck around.

I'm so glad kids are starting to get trans rep. Cis people don't understand how important it is to see yourself in characters you love. I didn't have that as a kid, BUT there was one character that read as trans to me and caused me to be obsessed with a series (an obsession I still have.) In the Animorphs book series there is a character named Tobias who gets stuck in the form of a hawk. The hawk is specifically a male hawk, because whatever the gender of the animal you absorb is what you turn into. His home life isn't great and he feels isolated because of several things that felt so realated to what it felt like to be trans as a kid but not really understanding what I felt because I had nothing to help me understand. Tobias became a character that I related to, and as I learned about myself I started to understand why. I love him so much, he helped me understand myself. Also there were two other characters, Marcus and Ax, that I thought were together as boyfriends when I was a kid and their domesticate way of being together, their easy talks and ready jokes, really helped me understand that I was gay. In the context of the books, I don't think they were actually together (meaning I don't think they were sneakily trying to suggest that like they did with an actual gay couple later in the series), but it was a reading I took away that helped me be me when I had nothing else to represent what I was feeling. Seeing kids have these characters so they can understand a part of themselves is wonderful. I'm so glad they have that, I hope it keeps getting better.
@Wereblood
@Wereblood 4 ай бұрын
For younger people reading this, when I mention sneakily trying to suggest something it's because companies would absolutely not allow representation of LGBT characters. They were terrified of parents going ape shit, which was common. I don't know how big a problem this still is since I'm not a kid, but I know it's not nearly as bad. I still read young adult novels because they're fun, and when queer characters do show up it's always pretty explicit. At least I know it's getting better.

The reason the buttons are on different sides is because when button down shirts were being marketed to women, clothing designers wanted women to be able to button the shirts “the same way they did for their husbands” without getting confused about the orientation of the buttons on the shirt, that being clothing designers were under the impression that 1.) women were dressing their husbands and buttoning up their shirts for them and 2.) women were so stupid they couldn’t figure out the buttons on their own shirts if they were on the same side as men’s dress shirts

I learned the shirt thing at a fairly young age, because I saw a shirt I really liked, and my mom said I couldn't wear it because it was a "girl's shirt" and the first thing she said was that the buttons were on the other side. Then she pointed out the seam in the chest to allow more room for breasts, to really drive the point home. Since then it's been something I've been acutely aware of whenever I buy button up shirts.

it would be interesting to see you check out ER sometime in the future, since you've covered a couple other medical dramas, as it had a few trans and intersex characters/storylines, S1:E9 (trans woman), S5:E5 (intersex girl), S9:E9 (12y/o trans girl), and S11:E10 (trans woman).

Is there anything to take from how they’re all women? Unless I’m misunderstanding, you’ve called all four of them either a girl or a woman. I’m vaguely curious if there’s any reason for that.
@nuclearweirdo

@@Hallow_Undead i think it just comes from the fact that trans men were (and still are) more invisible/less represented in media (observable by the fact most of lily's trans episode videos cover trans women or crossdressing men), especially considering these episodes are from mainstream mid '90s to early '00s television. EDIT: to clarify (just in case), when i say that trans men are less represented, i don't mean that it's an inherit positive thing for trans women that they are more visible in media, as unfortunately, much of their representation, especially in less modern media (ER included), isn't great and/or they're treated poorly by other characters.
@L1ncore

@@Hallow_Undead Yeah transmasc and nonbinary people are all underrepresented in media, thats basically it. But with the amount of trans men ive know who have been refused or mishandled by doctors, its kind of bizarre i cant think of any medical dramas that depict them. Untapped potential.

Forgotten moment of transphobia I was watching this video when I walked next to my partner and sat down. they heard the name of the show and was like yeah my kid is not allowed to watch that show because they walked in on an episode that was very transphobic and it is season 1 ep 14 ("lets make a steal" near the end of the episode) of the Henry Danger series. Cpt. Man and Henry where in a fight with three women and Captain Man is like "no I can't hit them because they're women" and Henry Danger goes" captain man these girls are dudes" after accidentally pulling a wig off of one of them when they're fighting. (The people fighting were obviously cis women before the cut) Cpt. Man replies "now we can hit them as hard and as much as we want"

Oh and The Fosters has a few trans masc characters and actors. I'd like to see your take on these shows too! As an enby trans guy (I present as a man , but that's not a complete picture of my internal sense of gender), I really liked Sex Education's portrayal of a masc enby and how transitions are complex and nuanced and look different for each person (but sometimes similar despite a gender difference, like top surgery). Never underestimate the power of including actual trans people in trans narratives. If my early exposure to trans narratives had been exclusively the fictional characters written and portrayed by cis people that were around back in 90s, I probably would have ended up with A LOT of internalized transphobia. But because I was lucky enough to catch some human interest pieces about real life trans people talking about their real lives, I never thought of trans people as sad, damaged victims or sinister pretenders. It made embracing my own nonbinary identity and finding the joy in it so much easier. I want that for every trans person.
