Theory: What if the Spider is actually Death incarnate? The boy is trapped in Limbo and the spider is a psycho-pomp, he cocooned the boy in order to prepare him for ascension into Heaven. When the boy escaped and began interfering in the lives of mortals he became a danger and the spider attempted to destroy him. By killing the spider the boy has essentially trapped himself in Limbo forever.

I'm absolutely terrified of spiders, but for some reason I sort of pity this one. It just reminds me of the animals who remembers when someone does them wrong and hunts them down because of it. When something like that happens, you want them to get their payback. So while I'm scared of spiders, I understood what this one was after.

No reason is given. Considering the name of the game and the beginning/end scenes, it's very likely that the main character is in limbo himself. The spider could represent oncoming death, or it could represent one of his greatest fears. I like the fear theory because you can also make a good argument for all the obstacles in the game being fears: spiders, drowning, helplessness(brain worms), fear of adulthood(massive, imposing hotels and factories full of saws and electricity), etc.

@@Equeon Necroposting, but I actually think that Limbo is by itself a mirror of an idyllic world that's morphed to be similar to hell, so all of the creatures that are native to Limbo, and the unbaptised kids with the original sin (or the unconscious childhood evil) are real and not part of the boys imagination. You can see that the kids who appear to be more time inside this real grew stronger and created structures and traps to protect themselves, in this case, from the spider (spiders? Other giant predators?) and from other kids. But I do think they all mean something inside the boys mind, but not in a spiritual way, more as narrative.

The spider presumably starts with 8 legs. After the first encounter, it is conceivable that the spider purposefully amputated it's 3 useless legs or lost them by some other means. While the cocooning spider has it's legs in tact, there are only 5 of them.

I never played this game but is the spider supposed to represent fear and overcoming it? The first enounter is nerve wracking (looking) with the bear trap and the other enounters involve running away from it. Then in the final encounter you rip off its last leg without the help of the environment. Idk just a though :3

There was one last mosquito in this game. It's in the city, and you have to grab it to get to a high place. I wonder why the spider didn't have 5 legs and 3 stubs later, just 5, and then only 4 legs and 3 stubs after the boulder hit him. It would've made the game more interesting if he survived and followed the boy into the city. And the boy kills him near the end with a collapsing building.

Spiders in real-life tend to keep there prey in Cocoon, some of them bite them first and put inside them a toxin that will slowly liquefie there interior. My theory is that the spider had a family and all of them were killed by those children. And the spider was the only one left. Dunno if anyone else noticed this, but in at least the first scene where you see the spider (that is, from 0:00 to 1:04), the spider has a face, or what looks like a face. At 0:07, if you look at its upper body while one of the legs is elongated and the other two are hanging up there, you can make out the features of a nose and chin. Go in-game or full screen this to get a better view of what I'm talking about.
