A lot of math teachers also have a tendency to be extremely vague about everything. They will throw out formulas and crap all the time without ever explaining WHY they work. That's exactly what Khan explains in all his videos, which is a big reason why he is so awesome.

When I arrived in college, my professor automatically assumed that I remembered EVERYTHING from all my past math classes. Sure I could factor and use trig functions, but I don't remember what I don't use. I was lost when we started on limits, until I saw these videos. Khan at least doesn't automatically assume that you remember everything. His style allows you to refresh while still learning a new concept. How ingenious...

No, I worked in the Avionics Engineering dept at US Airways. And before that, I did some research using MATLAB. I've taken math classes well beyond calculus, into partial differential equations. I got a B in PDE's, but it was still a very hard class! And I know and understand that math is very useful in the design process, but I still haven't used it in my work yet.

Well, that's just your own opinion. Because when I worked at US Airways, none of those engineers ever used any calculus. But yes, when I designed a rocket in my rocket-propulsion class, all I did was integrals, limits, etc., to calculate mass-propellant ratios, trajectories, etc. And now that I'm taking environmental prediction, I'm dealing with a lot of PDE's.
@renewd6 жыл бұрын
Since f(x) = (2x+2)/(x+2) is a constant function [f(x) = 2], except at x = -1, the y values are not approaching 2 as x gets closer to -1, they are exactly 2. This makes sense because 2x+2 factors to 2(x+2).

Well,it's a fact that it can be done with more than two ways!I don't mean to correct none,I'm just saying! Since 2x+2 it's Differentiable and x+1 is too.So by the Del'Hospital rule you can find the derivatives and you will have lim(x->-1) 2/1 = 2 It's the most easy and fast way finding limits,when you can actually use it. Here in Greece,we have done all limits as well as we have laernt ho to use the Del'Hospital rule ,before we become 18(the last grade of high school)
@sidstam11 жыл бұрын
The limit is 2, but the function is undefined at x=-1. See his last video in which he shows the difference between the value of a limit and the value of a function when the function takes on an unexpected value; I believe the example he chose was f(x) = x^2, f(2)=3, so lim x->2 of f(2)=4 (despite f(2) being defined as 3 for the function.)

@jiffy973 Sort of: the limit from the left is negative infinity and the limit from the right is positive infinity. However, customarily, it would just be positive infinity because people tend to refer to the graph of the function for x>0

it was very confusing for me when introduced also, but your not always solving for a y value so using f(x) early on helps the transition when your not solving for a y value (x,y) as a point = ( x, f(x) ) it just means what is the result of x pluged into the function basically function(x) = some value. hope that helps.

right before 2:50 you say that 2x+1 over x+1 is the same as 2(x+1) over x+1 and then you cancel out the x+1's and that it results into 2. But isn't the bottom part the same as 1(x+1) which will leave you with 2 over 1 after you cancel out the x+1's?
