The way you broke this down was much better than how I was taught. You explained it in a way I could understand, and now I feel confident in ace-ing my test tomorrow. I only got 46% on my first try, and luckily I have a chance at a retest tomorrow. 100% here I come!

You know, I used to think the educational system was in shambles up until college, where dedicated professors built up the intellectual integrity of the individual. BULLSHIT. I'm in college and PatrickJMT has succeeded where teachers who are paid handsomely have failed. And IT'S FREE. Thank you, you've saved me from failing my finals :)

if the left hand limit and right hand limit are not the same, the limit does not exist. a limit can not have two different values.

For the last problem, the textbook (Stewart, Early Transcendentals, 7th edition) says limit does not exist. (problem nr 45, chapter 2.3 ). They say it doesn't exist, because the denominator cannot go to zero while the nominator does not. But when I graph it with wolfram, it does go to negative infinity. My math tutor says that it doesn't exist because the items in the bracket cancel out each other. Why is the inconsistency?

Because the right and left limits aren't equal in the first example, doesn't that also mean that the function isn't differentiable in x=1 (so by definition that function isn't differentiable)
