its called "the north" because its specifically referring to the north of england, its recognising england and scotland as separate entities within the uk. additionally, people from the north/northeast call themselves northerners, and no one should be able to say "actually no you shouldnt call yourselves 'the north' even though its your place and you live there, we have business telling you what to do."

What Limmy was getting at was that a show called Great British menu is calling an area northwest making it seem like North West of Great Britain when they mean North West of England. Not watched the show but was probs an oversight as they just had to break down areas on GB into population zones so used regions but didn't include the full title. Either way it doesn't matter, Limmy just likes to bring home the point as if all Scots hate England. He does it just for a laugh though, incase your Anglo.
