Trust me you know don’t how much of a relief it was hearing you talk about awards I’m an international student who have couple of awards in school nothing too crazy and one state wise + accepted into a scholarship to study abroad with ~1% acceptance rate So it was really a bummer hearing “what awards you have to get to be accepted” But now I think it’s kinda possible and worth trying especially when I have decent extracurricular activities considering my background I’ll try killing it in my essays. Thanks Limmy❤

Sure It’s fine to get into a prestigious university that Everybody has heard of… But being in a relative old timer I can tell you folks don’t worry about where you get into. Just go to school you can afford… And study hard and do the best you can… People who graduate from no-name state schools end up excelling in business law medicine… I got into Yale and Columbia and ended up going to the University of Rochester… Because I got a full scholarship there… My cousin went to Cornell and was dissatisfied. Sophomore year she ended up transferring to a state school and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Same for another friend of mine who went to PENN. She ended up finishing her degree at Temple and was much happier there. Don’t be obsessed with getting into a specific school… Analyze your abilities, your chances of getting into different schools, applied to a variety of schools and focus on your commitment to education rather than a big name… I got an excellent education at the University of Rochester… Graduated without owing money… It’s all what you do with your education rather than the name… Good luck to everybody who wants an education and just go for it! ..

@@tcs20264 Yes. I'm a senior in high school right now, and if I get into Yale, I can expect to pay nothing for tuition because of my financial situation. I'm from a lower middle-class family, and we receive no government assistance, but because a lot of the students who attend these schools are extremely upper-class, they allow less wealthy people to attend for almost nothing.

The thing you said about crazy awards took off so much weight off my back. I’m from a pretty small highschool in Canada (around 1200 students in my school total), and while I have a perfect 100 average, a decent SAT (740 English, 800 math), and I’m rank 1 in my school, I have no crazy awards to show. I have a couple good extracurriculars like piano for 13 years (a diploma in the RCM), three-time provincial finalist in advanced piano (so beyond ARCT), 12-time champion of my school for math contests, and top 1 percent scorer in a math contest, but as you can tell none of those are flashy enough to even compare to say performing well at an international math Olympiad or winning an international piano competition.

The reality is, somebody has to be at the bottom of their class at Harvard and Yale… Going to a good school where you’re not just one of the super bright students has its advantages … You may get a lot more opportunity to shine and get internships. Your professors may be more dedicated to teaching than their own personal research and be more willing to write an amazing reference for you… bottom line… Don’t be impressed by the term “Ivy league“… After your first job, nobody cares… And even with your first job, most people who hire you just care about what you can do for them rather than the school you went to…

Yes. Don’t even worry until maybe the summer before 9th, but only spend your time doing what you’re passionate about, if you keep this going throughout high school that can be your “passion project.” Just focus on your grades, which you should be fine for, and the classes you are taking and how they will line up with your future job or major.

Schools care most about what you’ve done in HS. If they see you did a bunch of great things in middle school but sort of flatlined by high school, they’re going to think you’ve lost your drive. Most colleges don’t care much about middle anyway as long as you had good grades

Hey thank you so much for your video! I'm a student in the island of Mauritius, so we have much less access to resources (in like doing research i.e) or to any potentially important competitions. I was worried this would be penalising for me when applying to prestigious universities in the US or Canada, but what you said about the awards did reassure me! I was wondering if there was any quota per continents/countries as I know there are probably only 3 or 4 people each year from my island going into such schools, so will they be more lenient when considering our applications than, i.e, the applications of US candidates? Also for extracurriculars I'm in the national football team and the Liverpool academy (their African 'branch' is in Mauritius), so are those strong extracurriculars, or do they focus more on volunteering i.e? Yet my main dilemma is that I'm unsure whether I want to be a student athlete, so do these extracurriculars hold no importance if I won't be open to joining the university's team? Thank you for your videos!

how would you rank the 4 main parts of the application in terms of importance to an AO? As in, essays, ECs, stats, and awards. If there is benchmark for GPA and SAT/ACT, then does it even matter anymore after you've met that benchmark. I'm asking this because I feel almost every competent applicant in the pool applying to these unis is going to meet this benchmark. And I also feel like most will have very similar ECs and awards, like Olympiads, Research publications, founders of NPOs, and presidents of clubs at their school. Are essays the most important, then?

I’m in a similar position looking at the test flexible at Yale, it really depends on what your SAT compared to your environment is. A 1450 from a public school in West Virginia would boost an applicants profile while a 1500 from a top private school would probably be a negative

Hi , I’m a british student applying to ivys and I have kinda mid ECs still published Astro research , non profit volunteering , math olympiads (not IMO or anything )e.t.c. But not all of my activities are up to ivy standard and dont have these awards and the quantity most American students have because I go to an awful public British Highschool with less opportunities. Will they take my lack of access to as many opportunities into account or will I be held to the same standard as the US students ?

30 kids to each ivy league...... No private boarding school has 240 kids in their senior year going to ivy leagues... there's not even that many students.

Hey Lim, I am indian and live in a foreign country and go to international school. I am gonna go to grade 10 next year, I just wanted to ask how do you find extracurricular/intership and other opportunities to further enhance my application as I am not sure how I should do this. If possible can we connect more through instagram or any other way possible?
