I now understand that there are absolutely no technical roadblocks that prevents anyone with a reasonable amount of funds to build a real full size AT-ST that actually works as intended. Since that is a fact it is also extremely certain that someone will. Interesting times indeed.

the keyword in here is open source that allows developing countries like China and India to manufacture these robots. Their advancement depends on the how much the US government spends on research and development in the country. These companies just wait until something new made open source, otherwise these robots are just a box on tires and legs, nothing more.

I was thinking exactly that. It looks like a cool toy, but I don’t see how it is going to help e around the house or the workplace. Sure, you can attach a gun to it or some kind of arm, but what is this for? Is it just proof of concept? What do we want robots to actually do? Are we making developments in this area for a reason? What is the endgame? Space exploration? Deep sea exploration? Warfare? Helping disabed people? Or, are these just the drones we are going to send out into the world when we live underground after the surface of teh planet becomes inhabitable due to climate change?

Yup and missing a couple of joints in the leg there too. You see, the "reverse knee" on birds isn't actually a knee, it's their ankle. Birds have a big, fat, short powerful thighs hidden inside the feathers. That thigh is the difference between waddling like you need to get on the crapper, and running like an ostrich or cassowary. Robot developers seem not to get this fact. Also, proper knees are supposed to use two points of rotation for maximum range of motion. Look up Ball-Jointed Dolls (BJDs) and you'll understand what i mean. Plus, with every point of rotation you add to the leg, you can move the point that touches the ground *faster*. An ideal robot leg has 5 joints: Hip, Thigh-side of knee, Shin-side of knee, ankle and foot (or paw or whatever, for angling and keeping the part that touches the ground in contact with said ground). And the Hip is supposed to have two axes of rotation (go check out Boston Dynamics' latest version of Atlas)
