@krystaldelmar27974 жыл бұрын
Nana Fun Fact, did you know that many of the names you hear in this song are from the natives that lived in the Island before the Spanish colonization? Jayuya, Guaynabo, Cayey... most were names of the caciques or leaders from different groups that used to live in those places. Words from the vocabulary of taínos are still used in Puerto Rico. For giving you an example, the word ‘juracán’, gave oringin to the official term ‘huracán’ (hurricane) in Spanish.

For everyone who is commenting that they do not know what the song lyrics are about: A majority of the lyrics are city and town names in Puerto Rico. For example, my grandad currently lives in Aguadilla. My bloodline is rooted in Rincón, Ponce, and San Juan. These are all recited in the song. Anything else was an ad lib or declaring of love for their island. Thank you for showing your support despite the language barrier.

I am 100% NOT Puerto Rican. But, listening to this song paralyzed me. I was NOT here to cry, but reading some of these comments is just heartbreaking and mind blowing. I hear this song and think of all of the people that suffered in the disaster, with their children and loved ones. I look at my mom because she was born in 1972 and was only 3 when the Lebanese Civil War broke out. Her family was wealthy and got our. But what if they hadn’t been? What would’ve happened? I ask her, how come you’re not scared of loud noises? I imagine her saying, I’m used to the sound of bombs, the sight of blood, but loosing my mother was the hardest thing. I never saw my mother break down like that. This song helps me understand the many many many etc. people that were affected. I really don’t know what to say. Thank you? Bless you? I love you.

Tough I can assure you, I live in a neighborhood and I have a few friends here, trust me all that time created great bonds and friendship, now I have my neighborhood best friend who is always here for me. Lin-Manuel Miranda is truly a modern bard, one of the greatest musicians of our time, and such a wonderful person with a big heart. My knowledge of Spanish is elementary school level, so I don't understand most of the lyrics, but still, this was great. The spirit of the song transcends the language barrier. And, as a musical theater geek, I love how the song started with a few lines of "Maria" from "West Side Story"; the minute I saw the title, I had a feeling that's where the song would go and it didn't disappoint. Bravo, Lin, and everyone else involved. P.S. Would anyone else LOVE to hear Lin sing the role of Tony, or at the very least record songs from "West Side Story" on an album? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

If you watch the interview where he explains the genesis of the idea that is based on a commonality shared by Puerto Ricans, the song will then make perfect sense. Singing the 78 municipalities that compose the islands is the unity that he was looking for. The song succeeds on its simplicity and inclusion.

understanding this is probably beyond you, Alejandro DJD, but I write this for the benefit of others. right after the hurricane passed, LMM said his social media feeds were overloaded with messages from people trying to get information about friends and relatives on the island. the larger and well-known areas got some press coverage quickly, but the inland and mountain areas were suffering horribly and there was no news of what had happened to the people there. LMM wanted to think of a way to draw attention to the plight of the island as a whole, not just the famous places tourists have heard of. People who live in PR identify very strongly with the names of their towns, and some of these little places never get their names mentioned off-island. As the cries for help kept pouring in and the names of the towns kept repeating themselves, it began to feel like a litany (a Christian worship form where you repeat a long list of things for which you need help or for whom you are asking prayers). Lastly, for sixty years the name "Maria" was associated in a positive way with West Side Story, but from now on it will always be a negative name on the island--the name of the life changing disaster that changed PR forever. So LMM took the iconic "almost like praying" line from the musical (with Stephen Sondheim's permission) and added the litany of singing the names of the towns. It. Is. Fucking. Brilliant. And he put it together in 72 fucking hours. When you get a MacArthur grant, a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar nomination, and a shelf of Grammys and Tony Awards, you can pass judgment on whether the man can write, move people emotionally, and raise money for people in desperate need. All the talented people on this project would not have donated their time to something that was "trash". The reach of this song will go farther than anything you will ever do and by calling it nothing special you diminish yourself rather than the work. So don't criticize what you can't understand, and step aside while a genius like LMM keeps coming up with new ways to make the world a better place.

Really well put. Very eloquently said.

It's a good song, and I'm not knocking it, but your logic is flawed. You absolutely can critique a song well without having a string of awards. And even a very talented and accomplished artist like LMM can make mistakes or put something out that's subpar. Finally resorting to an ad hominem at the end of your comment doesn't help your case much either. Again, this is not a knock on the song or LMM, I'm just pointing out your reasoning isn't fully sound.

I'm from DC. Went to Puerto Rico on a cruise and had an experience I've never forgotten that can only happen when you're around truly wonderful people. I had a clear bag with my wallet, phone, tissues and a book. I left the ship, looked around a bit, bought some things, needed medicine so I went into the CVS across from the ship. The lady who was the cashier was so nice to me and we chatted a bit as I tried to speak in Spanish. Afterward, I got distracted and realized I needed to get back to the ship. *I got all the way back to my room and realized I didn't have my bag!!!* Again, inside was my wallet (with all credit cards & my cash), and my cell phone. I ran at top speed off the ship, down the long gangway, across the street and into the CVS. As I rushed in out of breath, looked around and saw the cashier. *She smiled at me and held up my bag!* I was so grateful!!! I tried to bless her with some money but she wouldn't take it. She just was glad I was okay. *THAT is what I think of when I think of Puerto Rico. The love and kindness of the people.* 🥰🥰🥰

The pure shock of when Maria hit our island left me emotionless. I did not react when I saw that my family and I were trapped in our home because the roads were blocked in ruble and fallen trees. I just hugged my father finally came back from work alive (he was gone for 4 days without us knowing of him). I just got out of my home yesterday as a family and we hit the road to buy necessities. This song came on the radio as I saw all that was gone; and I've never cried so hard in my life. We will stand again. It may seem trivial to some people, but to many Puerto Ricans, this song is special, and I am sure it is even more special to those who experienced Hurricane Maria first hand. Sometimes in order to help you don't need to do big things. Giving people hope, pride, and happiness is enough. Giving the people of Puerto Rico something that is uniquely theirs, was enough in this case, to at least lift a bit of the load.

This is outstanding. That Lin-Manuel Miranda could orchestrate this and pull it off in so little time. What an incredible person, what an incredible mensch. Talk about a poke in the eye for President Hoof in Mouth! And the millions he’s raised literally overnight, while President Hoof in Mouth blames Puerto Rico for being decimated by Maria. Thank you Lin-Manuel, for reminding me there still is hope.

I don't know what the lyrics mean, but I cry anyway. Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of the most amazing people ever to live, who actually uses his influence for good, and to help those around him. I've never had a hero in the past, anyone to aspire to, but Lin is that hero.
@vrianalyaguero52897 жыл бұрын
Silphaer same! Also in the lyrics they are saying all the places in Puerto Rico cuz we had no signal to contact people and the family and friends out of Puerto Rico had no idea if they were okay. So they would say "anyone know about Humacao, Carolina, Juncos?" and people would send messages in the radio to know if anyone in those places are okay and that was converted into lyrics. If my explanation suck (it sucks) there is a video that lin explained it himself.
@a-mellowtea7 жыл бұрын
As Vrianaly said, and if I remember correctly, the lyrics list off all 78 cities in Puerto Rico. "Say it loud and there's music playing, say it soft and it's almost like praying" is a lyric from the musical West Side Story in which Tony, the lead male, falls in love with a Puerto Rican woman named Maria. Different in this regard, of course, as Hurricane Maria is the source of all the devastation.

Devastating hurricane María changed my life. The event itself was the most scariest day of my life, but what was hard was what's coming next from the disaster. No light, no water, scarce food, no gas, no signal, no communications. I didn't hear anything of my mom until 14 days. We have been working since day 1 with unkwnown people of the community from asking them what they need house by house, to logging trees in the middle of the street, sharing meals even if it was a granola bar. Everyone go out and help each other. But not every place in the island has been so lucky. Hearing the stories of everyone make you so grateful for life and conciouss. Some cities have been literally isolated because the street was gone by the floodings and the landslides. People over there that lost it all have been struggling with cocconut water to survive. The unavaiability of Diesel for hospitals is making people die. Recently people are starting to get sick and 2 are dead from Leptospirosis for drinking water at a river. It only takes time until the hunger and the scarcity of clean water make people sick and weak. My aunt yesterday got me in a flight, because now I don't have where to live, no money, lost my job and my school semester until January 2018.

ramen noodle PR was given special treatment compared to Florida and Texas. The military and FEMA responded more quickly to PR than to any other state or territory. It still took one or two days for the response to occur from Harvey down in Texas, so why is PR complaining? When trump said that they (PR) were throwing the budget a little off track, he wasn’t lying. Not only is the USNS Comfort coming down, after you guys had several large naval ships and dozens of helicopters answer the call, but it costs quite a bit to operate. PR is even lucky they are a US territory, or given their debt ($79 billion, a lot considering it’s a territory and their budget is fairly low), low economy status and other factors. So stfu, stop complaining, and you get what you get.

Love the West Side Story reference Lin! And it fits perfectly because Maria was Peurto Rican. This song is amazing and I love seeing people come together to celebrate where there are from and help the people still on the island!

@@ameliar5050 the refrain “say it soft and it’s almost like praying” is taken directly from the song “Maria” from the musical “West Side Story.” It’s ingenious actually, because the musical is about people from Puerto Rico living in New York, and Maria is also the name of the hurricane that devastated the island.
