Are there any rules as to how one pronounces rho/ρω? At 1:32 you seem to be making an alveolar flap when you say παρέα, but a trill when you say the letter and within all the other words. i.e. - I think your tongue hits the roof of your mouth once when saying παρέα, but multiple times in ράβω, ρω, & χαρούμενος.

most usually it's an alveolar flap, but i guess a trill comes out easier or naturally when it's in the beginning of a word... but in my experience, the alveolar flap is the common usage

Λατρεύω το κανάλι σας στο KZbin, αλλά χρειάζομαι περισσότερες ασκήσεις γραφής. Πώς μπορούμε να συμβεί αυτό;

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that. You mean handwriting? Please let me know how you picture these videos and I'll see what I can do. I have a video on the alphabet handwriting, it's in the grammar playlist. Btw your Greek is fantastic! The only correction I should make is "Πώς μπορεί να συμβεί αυτό;" (the verb "μπορώ" in the third person singular-the subj. being "αυτό" (it)). Otherwise excellent! Well done!

just 'χ' confuses me - is it pronounced with an extra exhalation of the breath ? - is 'χο' like 'kho'. . . or is it like 'hkho' - thanks a lot
@linaaaap1

Well, I can't explain phonetics very well, but I will give it a try. First, "χ" has nothing to do with "κ" or "k" or "c". It's more like an "h" that "could hurt your throat a bit"! You leave the air out like in "h" but from a smaller opening ! It's like the Scottish "ch" in "Loch". But since you won't find "χ" at the end of any Greek word (expect some interjections), you have to practice it along with the following vowels, like I explain in this video! Hope this helped. Please let me know.

Rainstorm R Χ before an /e/ or /i/ sound is pronounced /ç/. In all other cases it's pronounced /x/.
@rainstormr7650
@rainstormr7650 6 жыл бұрын
@Tom raptile : yes i knew that i meant about the pronunciation of the sound itself to which Lina gave an excellent explanation [ & i would only ask a native greek speaker such a question ;)..]
@ppaaccoojrf
@ppaaccoojrf 4 жыл бұрын
@@rainstormr7650 His explanation is quite helpful if you know IPA and native speakers do not necessarily know how to explain the linguistics (phonetics included) of their own language. I had been quite confused since the sound did NOT sound at all like /x/ (i.e. the ch in "loch") sometimes. Turns out the same thing happens in Greek as it happens in German and probably other languages, /x/ becomes /ç/ close to certain vowels.
