What is Geo Clustering? How does Geo Clustering work? In “Geo Clustering Explained,” David Hay discusses geo clustering technology using Booth, Pacemaker and Corosync. He’ll discuss why geo clustering is an optimal technology to use when running redundant services between large distances and amongst different sites. He’ll go into detail on how the decision-making technology - Booth - uses a voting system to establish which sites are available to run a given service via the assignment of "tickets". Lastly, David discusses how DRBD Proxy replicates application data efficiently between sites.

Reminds me of those old GFS clusters (single dc) with their quorom servers. Problem is, firstly there is the split-brain scenario with the DRBDs and the second problem is what if the booth node is hacked. Nice way of destroying your database, if both site A and site B think they're the master. But simple solution that will work in many many cases.

Great presentation team. What happens in the event the third site deciding vote can’t reach either site A or B due to network disruption?

All sites run the "booth" daemon. The arbitration node only runs the booth daemon. This provides us 3 sites, meaning that we only need 2 nodes for quorum. If the arbitration node goes down then the 2 sites still maintain quorum, and as such will continue to renew the booth tickets, and run services.

How is this different than grid computing?

Geo-clustering, in this context, is describing an active/passive failover (high availability) cluster that is stretched across a WAN. When "Site-A" dies or becomes unreachable, another site takes over any services that were running at "Site-A". Grid computing, generally speaking, is a set of computers that are all actively working to solve the same problem, which is more like a high performance computing cluster. Hope that helps!
