Perhaps most people who see Lincoln as a hero are wise enough to understand that human beings can be both heroic and flawed. Lincoln's first goal was to preserve the Union. It became clear to Lincoln during the war that ending slavery was not just a moral issue but a necessary goal to ensure Union victory. He did not enslave a nation he united one by ending an economic system based on violence, rape and tyranny.
@mengelmoesNL10 жыл бұрын
Ending slavery was just a BS propaganda tool like spreading democracy in the middle east while doing it for oil. Slavery would have ended in a natural way, like it did in the rest of the world, but it was used (later on when the war was already raging) for the justification of killing 2% of the population for defending the tax infrastructure of the Federal government. Wise people understand that politicians are assholes who lie and kill for power.
@GrinnolaAlum10 жыл бұрын
Ending slavery was a brilliant move. It had multiple motivations. Some were moral implications as articulated by the abolitionist movement, it had foreign policy implications because by making the war about the moral issue of slavery it prevented Britian from aiding the confederacy economically and recognizing them diplomatically. It also struck terror in the hearts of southern slavers who suddenly found themselves with a free population of human beings who they had abused and oppressed for generations. Like all brilliant political moves it was part BS but more importantly it was part moral decision, part foreign policy move to cut off an alliance between Great Britain and the Confederacy and most brilliant of all WMD against the Confederacy which guranteed a new infusion of soliders and individuals who could provide inside information and intelligence to the Union Army. You are thinking to small to see Lincolns decision so one dimensionally. He was playing chess while the opposition was playing checkers; the man was a brilliant strategist.
@mengelmoesNL10 жыл бұрын
GrinnolaAlum He killed 600.000 Americans and destroyed the basic concept that founded America. Since we agree slavery wasn't the motivation we can conclude that the war wasn't started for moral reasons (like every goddamn war). I'm sorry but I refuse to call mass murderers "hero's", be it on the left/ right or the center. Does this mean i endorse slavery? No.
@GrinnolaAlum10 жыл бұрын
mengelmoesNL The level of hypocrisy among Confederate revisionists never ceases to amaze. It was both immoral and irresponsible for the south to begin a war against an opponent that had more resources and an economy that put them at an advantage. Lincoln did not force them to start the war they made that stupid decision and are responsible for the consequences including the lives lost.
@mengelmoesNL10 жыл бұрын
GrinnolaAlum He knew the south would fire if he supplied the fort. A great strategy I'll give him that. ""You and I both anticipated that the cause of the country would be advanced by making the attempt to provision Fort Sumter, even if it should fail; and it is no small consolation now to feel that our anticipation is justified by the result." Very truly your friend, A. LINCOLN.

I wish someone had asked if they had watched John Ford's 'Young Mr. Lincoln' starring Henry Fonda and if it influenced them in any way in making their movie. Since that was a 1939 movie made by one of the greatest directors ever with a great actor playing Lincoln, it's very likely that it was made with a lot of input from people who knew Lincoln personally. I always felt that movie was the definitive Lincoln movie of its era and was possibly also the most accurate.

@mononoke7216 жыл бұрын
Agreed, with a slight amendation (appropriately enough) - Walking down the hallway with that last speech playing in the background, because Lincoln's words are as memorable as his iconic figure. The film didn't need the whole 'drama' of his death, which really wasn't made all that relevant to the story itself. It could have been included in a text-only denouement instead, like in a lot of historical films.
