A songwriter's champion. "Writers would crawl on broken glass to have Ronstadt wrap those pipes around their tunes". Some songs, like this, she rescued from the oldies jukebox - other songs were exposing new songwriters of the era like Zevon, Lowell George, Karla Bonoff, Henley and Frey, and Elvis Costello among others. Linda was a very special songbird.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has had so many hits such as "Different Drum", "When Will I Be Loved", "Long, Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs. Also love her collaborations with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris.

She seemed to do a number of duets with Aaron Neville for an album she released in 1989, "Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind". One duet I like off of that is their rendition of "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby".

That's an all star band right there. Andrew Gold on guitar - he was a regular guitarist and arranger with Linda as well as a solo artist. On the drums is Richie Hayward, regular drummer for Little Feat. On the congas is Skunk Baxter, guitarist with both Steely Dan and the Doobie Bros. Kenny Edwards was Linda's regular bassist and did session work with a dozen other artists. Check out the studio version, it has a different vibe but it's still a banger.

A true queen of music, and the most versatile voice, man or woman we’ve ever seen. I have been praying for the day when I see you react to something by her she was never a songwriter, but a great song interpreter and if you do the Rolling Stones Tumbling Dice and then right after it do Linda’s version you’ll be amazed. Tom Petty is great and I love his song “the waiting” but Her version is the best version I’ve ever heard, even including Tom’s. I feel the same way about Elvis Costello‘s song “Alison” and Linda’s version

An amazing thing about Linda is how she stretched herself as an artist, she could have easily stuck with the formula but she fought to record an album of standards with Nelson Riddle which was highly successful and turned into a trio of albums - she then recorded an album of Mexican songs that were favorites of her father - also highly successful and led to two more Spanish language albums. Not to mention her light opera with Pirates of Penzance.

Yes, it is VERY fair to say that Linda Ronstadt is absolutely the artist with the most hits that were cover songs. Her artistry is her powerhouse vocals and style and how she took many lesser known songs and made them her own. She takes the cake with the most (thirteen total) Hot 100 hits (almost all in the Top 40) that were all cover tunes: “Blue Bayou”, “Heat Wave”, “Hurt So Bad”, “I Can’t Let Go”, “It's So Easy”, “Just One Look”, “Ooh Baby Baby”, “Poor Poor Pitiful Me”, “That'll Be The Day”, “Tracks Of My Tears”, “Tumbling Dice”, “When Will I Be Loved” and “You're No Good”.

Check out her other stuff and chart history. In addition to the above she had many other hits and success in Latin/Mariachi music (she is part Mexican), Big Band (American Song Book) and country of course. But she made her name with rock covers and is responsible for forming a little band tiny rock band known as the Eagles.

In my estimation, Linda Ronstadt is the most successful cover artist of all time and a great singer. But her remakes don't compel me to forget the originals e.g. "Tumbling Dice" (Rolling Stones), "Living In The U.S.A." (Chuck Berry), "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (Warren Zevon), "That'll Be The Day" (Buddy Holly), "When Will I Be Loved" (Everly Brothers), etc..

One of the things I love about her is that she kind of switched things up on the producers in that this sort of presentation format was to focus on the singer/vocalist but she had a whole section for the artists and instrumentation which brought so much more to the song. Inclusive, many make one kind of ideal in songwriting and mixing that some don'r really value, but yo can hear the difference in this very short song unto itself. Linda, the back-up singers, the drummer, guitar player, bongo player, bass player, this is a whole outfit and therefore I like her musical message that it's a whole group and not one "star".

Not the best video choice. There are so many other live-performance videos that showcase her voice better than this one. But the most important thing is that Linda Ronstadt is finally on the channel. It’s heartbreaking that a disease has destroyed her voice (and is destroying her body) and she can no longer sing. Love several of her songs: Someone to Lay Down Beside Me (this one would turn Nick into a puddle), When Will I Be Loved, Blue Bayou, Tumbling Dice, Desperado are just a few. Using Long, Long Time in E3 of The Last of Us was brilliant. The first female artist to have four consecutive albums go platinum. She was big deal. Please get back to her soon.

Linda Ronstadt is a musical jewel. When you listen to this again and you should, listen to the studio version so that you can hear some of the other nuances that don't translate in The Midnight Special version. The Midnight Special is freaking awesome but listen to the album too. The band is with all the people who are in it. Andrew Gold is also in there and you should listen to his song Lonely Boy. Everything that Linda did was flawless because Linda was a perfectionist. You need to follow up with something from her 1987 album, Canciones de Mi Padre. This album was a tribute to her Mexican heritage and to her father. It was a labor of love for her, and she put more passion into it than to anything else, if that's even possible. Two songs I would recommend are "La Cigarra" (the cicada) and "La Charreada" (the rodeo). You will NOT be disappointed.

The studio version is better, IMO. This is one her best rockers. Her voice to me really shines in her ballads--see "Blue Bayou" and, one of my all time favorites by anybody, "Long, Long Time". I believe Linda's mother was Mexican or Mexican American--I'm too lazy to look it up right now but she has some Latin American ancestry and being from Tucson she was exposed to that kind of music. Check out " La Charreada" to hear just how powerful her vocals can be.

She was not a songwriter. Like many of the great singers in her prime, she sang other people’s songs but would not sing a song she did not feel. A song was altered by Mick Jagger and given to her to sing because Mick loved her voice. The song “Tumbling Dice” was a big hit for her. Her voice was her instrument until she lost her ability to sing due to a neural disease. No one like her with such a pure singing voice.

If you want to be blown away do Linda’s Mariachi live performances, she’s unbelievable! Also, STEVIE NICKS is from AZ. You might’ve heard of her…

@@markberryhill2715 I believe they both lived in AZ at some point, but weren’t born here.

The red headed dude on the guitar, Andrew Gold, wrote some hits too. One of which was "thank you for being a friend".

That's quite a back up band for Linda. I believe that is legendary session musician Skunk Baxter on the bongos, and Andrew Gold on lead guitar. Gold had some big 70s solo hits. Thank You for Being a Friend and Lonely Boy are classics. Of course she always surrounded herself with great musicians. Her early 70s back up band had these two unknowns named Don Henley and Glenn Frey. :)

"The Midnight Special" had rotating guest hosts, but Wolfman Jack and Helen Reddy were multiple repeat hosts. They also had stand-up comedians perform on the show now and then, like George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Steve Martin.
