This is the 3rd video in a 3 part series. The series displays our process of splitting a log, that is too big for the mill, with black powder (1st video) and then sawing each half on the mill (2nd & 3rd videos). This video features us milling the 2nd half in real time, although parts were edited out to fit nearly 40 minutes of work into a 20 minute video. Watch to the end for a blooper.

I know you-all don't use the dragback feature in normal production. But I would have used it to shuttle the cant forward on the mill. Raise the roller toe board just a little and be careful and go slow.
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 жыл бұрын
bibbyman2 The roller toe board gets used often to help roll the cant, as you can see it came to the rescue. That lever makes it pretty easy, too. The drag back does get used once in a while, but it's in the way more often than we use it. Occasionally, we talk about taking it off, but it's nice to have for those "once in a whiles." ;) Thanks for watching! Linda

A lot of hustle. Also a lot of walking. Change your layout some to reduce walking time/energy. Maybe additional scrap locations? Would a measuring strip along the outfeed of the rip saw save pulling out a tape?

I'm curious about your edger. Is it an open sided edger? Where did you get it? Are they still available? What is the upper thickness limit? Is it a two saw or a three saw machine? What are the grade sorts that you're pulling to?

Here is a link to my video about the edger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4OXd4FqhMSSpq8 In the video, I mentioned that Morgan wasn’t making them anymore, because they didn’t for many years. Though recently we found out that a different company bought out the left over parts and was assembling and selling them. Don’t know who or if there are any left, or if they will continue to make them. The only thing I know is they are painted a different color. Linda

I notice that you seem to use a squeegee sometimes to scrape off the residual sawdust. I've got to try that out. That looks like a good idea. Have you ever used a wide sheet rock taping knife? It works really well. Gets everything! It slows me down a tad but then I don't have to deal with all that nuisance sawdust stuck to the green lumber down the line in the drying process. All the Best!!!

Great Vid...always amazed at your workflow; everyone knowing what they need to be doing every step of the way. In regards to the blade change..on average, how often do you need to change your blade, and can they be sharpened, or is it a one-time-use blade? Thanks again for a great video!
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 9 жыл бұрын
Michael McGill Thank you. Blade can be sharpened several times and a sharpening can last through several logs unless the logs are dirty. Dirt and sand can dull the blade quickly, sometimes in only a few cuts. Rocks and nails, of course, can ruin the blade completely, sometimes making it impossible to finish the cut. Here is a link to a video I made about blade problems: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmYon2ud8mArcU You are welcome, thanks for watching! Linda :)

I thought with there being indoor equipment, there would be dust removal on saws for safety. Keep floors from being slippery. I guess concrete slab floor was brushed upon being poured to create non slip surface.
@LindasSawmillCinema
@LindasSawmillCinema 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, We have a good dust collection system. Though, there is still dust in the cut stuck to the boards, etc. that the blower can’t get at. Let me give you a link to our dust collection system. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5CQhqFqeKyHnrs And another link to the edger, which if you watch closely, you can see the enclosed pit below the blades where the dust tube takes the dust from. Then when I show the edger adjustment lever, you can see the dust tube on the floor along the wall that goes to the edger pit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4OXd4FqhMSSpq8 The floor has no texture, to make clean up simpler. Thanks for watching. Linda

Hey, your feed chain is getting pretty loose... I always love these videos! You guys are the very picture of efficiency. It's very instructive. Thanks a lot! I wish you had shown the details of how you set the charge or charges of black powder to blow the log apart. Did you just drill a one inch hole and stick powder and a fuse in there? How did you decide how much? A little bit, then a whole bunch more for giggles? Multiple holes & charges? But unless you somehow coordinated the charges, you only used one because it appeared to be only one blast. I may need to do that soon... Inquiring minds, ya know... :)

LindasSawmillCinema I see. You use a chainsaw kerf and a wedge plug. Made me a little nervous when he was POUNDING that wedge in! There is NOWHERE to stand that's not dangerous when pounding on it!!! Not too detailed but I understand that you don't want the liability. That's ok. I will piece it together and practice on some smaller logs first. I usually just turn & cut & turn & cut & turn & cut & turn & turn & turn until I have whittled a big log down to size. Usually only the sap wood is sacrificed anyway. We have a lot of big Walnuts around here that I do that way while trying to get as much crotch wood as possible, of course! But also, you can schooch the log all the way in until it almost hits the carriage support and that gives you a lot more diameter. Labor intensive though...! Blowing the sucker up should be a lot easier! (and more fun) Thanks a lot!

***** Thank you for the complimentary feedback. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Interesting thing about Wood-Mizer: In 2012 & 2013 Wood-Mizer promoted 3 videos from my channel, on their Facebook channel. Then in 2014, one by one, all 3 videos had been plucked from the Wood-Mizer Facebook page. I'm not sure why Wood-Mizer took them down, as I didn't notice any of the other people's videos being taken down. We try to promote Wood-Mizer as much as possible, and it's disheartening that they seem to be shunning us. Oh well, life goes on. I haven't visited your channel lately. Just out of curiosity, when you cut logs into boards do you use the dumbass government measurements or do you use TRUE measurements. For example, are your 2x4s actually 2x4 or are they 1.75x3.75?
