Lindow Common Wilmslow. Lindow Common in Wilmslow features one of the world’s most threatened habitats.
The importance of Lindow’s heathland is such that it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
As well as areas of heather, visitors can appreciate the other habitats, which add to the Common’s richness - a fringe of woodland, wet mires and Black Lake.
This is where the famous Lindow Man was discovered.
Lindow Common has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). Positive management is vital in the preservation and enhancement of heathland. In 2001, the former Macclesfield Borough Council received a special commendation from English Nature, the government-funded body which overseas nationally important wildlife sites, in recognition of its management of Lindow Common.
Lindow Common SSSI is a lowland heath with a perimeter of woodland and scrub plus a man made lake and a number of wildlife ponds.
Natural history interest lies in an abundance of amphibians, plants - round-leaved sundew, bog rosemary, bog asphodel, cranberry and bogbean plus common lizards who sun themselves on areas of bare ground.
A walk around Black Lake, at the centre of the site, may lead to sightings of water voles, dragonflies, damselflies and a number of breeding duck species. While the trees and scrub provide habitats to our early migrating bird species including chiffchaff, willow warbler and blackcap.

I tried my hand at skating on Lindow Common in the 1940s and never learned to stay vertical. Now I'm in my 80s. It's a lovely place stilll.

it was given to the people of Wilmslow and Cheshire East council have no right to manage it. Nobody can use the lake for fishing or model boating and the site overall looks a right mess.

This was a beautiful place in the 60's. I never saw anybody fishing there, but every Sunday model boaters would congregate and the families and passers by would all enjoy themselves. I visited last year, the first time in 56 years, the place is a disgrace and whoever it is who decided to return it to its natural state should be ashamed of themselves.
