Stolen from the full KZbin post of the 1987 Tony Awards, this caught my eye as an exotic piece of performance media.

I would have wanted Alan Rickman in the film version.

There’s probably a recording of it at the New York Public Library of Performing Arts, which makes a recorded archive of most Broadway shows. They aren’t easy to access though, better if your a researcher or an academic.

I may be wrong, but this may of been the night in which the casting director for Die Hard and John Mctiernan both attended, watched and decided that they had found their Hans Gruber.

I’ve seen this play twice on Broadway. Once with Laura Linney (Meretuil) and once worn Janet McTeer as Meretuil and Liev Schreiber as Valmont, oh my god he looked gorgeous. Two truly beautiful and wild productions, loved it and loved the film with Glenn Close and John Malkovich and the book of course

I've read les liaisons dangereuses in my French school and now after knowing that Alan played it i cannot see Valmont in another way + the fact that Alan is so far from valmont as a person ( valmont is one of the evilest character i read) but he pulled him out so well that I can't see someone else play him

Rickman and Duncan are superb actors but then the same can be said of Close and Malkovich. I have seen the movie several times and Close should have won the Oscar for her performance which I find is majesterial. The clip is two minutes long so I find it odd that you can say that the movie is no comparison.

Oddly enough the makers of that film saw him in this play and decided he would make the perfect Hans Gruber, and they were right. I’m sure the Alan Rickman was very disappointed that he didn’t get selected to do the film version of Les Liaisons, but had he gotten the part he wouldn’t have been available to do Die Hard, so I guess everything worked out for him in the end.
