Not only is Le Chateau de Chenonceau one of the most magnificent palaces in France’s Louire Valley, it also has one of the most fascinating histories. It is known as the Ladies’ Chateau for the many women who owned, renovated and left their mark on it over its 500 year history. The elegant property, which spans the River Cher, has been at the center of a rivalry between the French King’s mistress and his wife, and at the center of enlightenment philosophy. It narrowly escaped destruction during the French revolution and was used as a hospital during WWI and a base for the French resistance in WWII. Let’s visit the glamorous and tranquil Chateau de Chenonceau and explore it’s intriguing history.

Not really when marriages are arranged to safeguard strategic positions of power. Check out Daughters of Marie Therese and the Hapsburgs. I once saw a charming painting of a young beautiful German princess whos husband had abandoned her, threw her into a nunnery and the two babies playing around her skirts she never saw again. That's disrespect! Catherine was just power hungry.

regardless of how the marriage came about, Catherine and Henry were married and he showed her no respect, flaunting his mistress in court for everyone to see. Diane encouraged Henry to bed his wife to have children because as a king he needed legitimate heirs, she did that as a power play to manipulate him and ensure she remain in his favour. Catherine of course would be unhappy about the situation, it's a very tall order to ask her to be grateful to Diane when everything she did was to her own benefit. Diane had much sway with Henry, if she wasn't that conniving then she would have rejected the chateau when she new Catherine wanted. One hand clapping can't make a sound. After years of humiliation, I don't blame Catherine for taking her revenge.

So glad to know that the wealthy who bought the Chateau starting in the 19th Century were committed to restoring and keeping it in all its historical glory. Some historical places and buildings aren’t so lucky. I was nervous, while watching this, that someone was going to buy it, change it too much and then have the government buy the Chateau again and do a major restoration before turning it into a public museum. Another great video Lindsay!

@@kadokena To be fair, many German castles are from the 19th century romanesque period, like the very industrial Neuschwanstein (which I still love, but well). And Germany still have less big palaces, especially 17th and 18th century ones. And be it in England, France or Germany, real medieval-fortified castles are mostly in ruins 99% of the time (the 1% left being only those renovated or simply reconstructed like Malbrok castle, Carcassone or the Haut Koenisbourg). Thus what Germany have more than others are "fairy tale castles", which are mainly from the 19th century.

👏👏 jokes aside- very well done! You got all the juicy details as well as most of the nerdy ones I was looking for! You also included historical portraits and close-ups of all the things you were talking about, which a lot of amateur videographers fail to focus on. I appreciate the great level of detail work that went into compiling all of the images and synchronizing them to your detailed narrative.😊 now I'm curious to know a bit more about the Marc Family and what happened there.

Pronounced phonetically as "She-non-so" not "Shenon-ceeuh". Sounds the same as "Chateau". Thanks for posting.

It's pronounced "sheh-nahn-so," not "sheh-non-see-ooh." "Ceau" in French is pronounced "so." Just letting you know.

This place has such a history! I'm so glad that they didn't destroy it during ww2! My dream is to one day, when my husband and I are on our own, after the kiddos are grown, is to travel to France and England and see all the sights! And the chateau is definitely on my bucketlist!!! Thanks for the videos!

We visited in 1989 with a group of American Historians and was so impressed by its beauty and its location crossing the river. The gardens were well designed and fully blooming that summer. What wonderful colors.

Oh wow, that was wonderful!!!! So much history after Katherine! I love that it was used during the wars but I hate that it was bombed!!! Thank God it's been restored and not forgotten like so many other historical buildings. Thank you so much for the information. I just found you after finishing the Serpent Queen series and was doing a little research. Now I'll have to watch more of your stuff. New sub for sure! ❤️ from Pensacola

I have to be absolutely honest.. I hated history in high school and college, but I have such an appreciation for it now. So much culture and richness in the past. Definitely will visit some of these architectural sites 🙏🏼😁😁

Diane was my favourite owner of the chateau. She was beautiful and intelligent and truly loved King Henry, overlooking his children and caring for Catherine Di Medici. Thank you for enriching our knowledge. I hope to visit it someday.
