Yes, this one is very long, and my hair is worse than usual. Two men who know too much about tanks talk for too long about just two tanks (with a number of side-tracks).
One annoying thing is that all the picture-in pictures illustrating what we are talking about when we are seated in the front of the Churchill have somehow been thrown out of synch and all come in too early. Unfortunately, KZbin does not enable me to upload an alternative version of this without losing all the views and comments.

Submarines smell of body odor, diesel fuel, old socks and dead fish, after a week under way. Before the mid 1980s, we covered the stink with liberal application of tobacco smoke. After two weeks, you can't smell any of it. When you get back in port, you can't believe how badly a submarine stinks. Good times.

@yeoldebiggetee considering that Nicholas works as a tank historian for Wargaming, hes literally a tank historian as a profession. He has more time and resources to dive into the documents and memoirs regarding all things tanks. Not to mention his job ensures he gets plenty of time spelunking in historical tanks.

@yeoldebiggetee Go watch the chieftain's channel, where he goes through tanks with a fine tooth comb. The man goes over how to maintain each vehicle, sits and explains every position in detail and even breaks into the vehicle's manual when needed. This man has a wide array of tanks to compare with. And being an actual tanker does give him a leg up on Lloyd. He doesn't have to imagine how a crew works together or having a tank as your home, he's lived it. Just because it's in an M1 and not a churchhill doesn't change how the crew interacts or how they have to work together to fight and maintain the vehicle.
@beersmurff
@beersmurff 5 жыл бұрын
@yeoldebiggetee Your premise is flawed. Chief isnt the common Vauxhall driver. He's a trained tanker who has worked as a tanker for more than 20 years. Not only as a tanker but also a person who has to command a squadron of tanks and more. So he's more like a professional Rally driver. Those guys know more about the basics of most cars than the avergae Joe. Even though they never sat in a Ferrari, they know the principles behind and what is good and what works with what and how. Lindy is the book worm who, albeit knows more than most, doesnt have the real life experience with tanks or mechanics to draw the same conclusions as Chief. Lindy has a tendency to rely too much on books written by other book worms who never sat in a tank in combat or training. I love them both and they make a good team, but I'd rely more on Chief to be right in a discussion than Lindy. Lindy does however come up with some great questions and findings. Like the lack of space for helmets and so on.

@yeoldebiggetee Sorry for response 5 months later. You do make some good points. Chieftan himself admits that his ability to drive an M1 Abrams has absolutely no baring on his knowledge of WWII vehicles. His national bias can be explained simply by the fact that he is the resident historian for WG NA. His job takes him to the US national archives which is where he gets most of his documentation. Of course, his position has given him access to various museums and a level of access your average person could only dream of. He has also had the opportunity to comb the minds of veterans and some of the top minds in the history of armored warfare. So to say that Lindybeige knows as much about WWII armor as the Chieftain is not really fair to Nicholas.

i love the M5, but i think it needed to get a 5cm main cannon, and it could be done. the chinese put some 47mm cannon in theirs. i got to drive the M5, and it was fun as hell! upgrade the engine and trans as into 1943, it could be made to be a great recon tank, slap on some additional armor, upgrade the suspension a bit, and then you could be sure that, if you were able to slip into a flanking shot with additional units, that 5cm cannon would take out most tanks going right up their rear. the only other "tank" i have driven was the M42A1 Duster. thats actually for aircraft. twin 40mm cannon! there was a story my old bus driver told me about one of these sitting in a lot of brush, there was also a command car and 3 jeeps, and a number of men that were there were wounded. there was a T34/85 that must have been scouting. it parked itself out about 120 yards ahead of these guys, and seemed to be observing the valley below. the US troops were getting ready to sneak out since they really didnt have the means to take on the tank and most were wounded. the m42 loaded AP and API and got some other clips ready. the commander was going to give the north korean some surprise butt sex . those things were pretty nimble and so when they got the signal, they let loose with almost a minute of continuous fire. working over the engine and the rear of the turret, they completely messed up the tankers night. killed the engine, split the rear of the turret and ignited the fuel. only 2 survived the attack from the rear, but i havent read of the account and that sounds like something worthy of the medal. i do, however, have no doubt that the tank would have lost its engine and most of the crew, because even a big russian diesel engine wouldnt stop 40mm API ammo from point blank range with the AAA tanks rate of fire.

I even pointed out the Cugir armory markings and told him that I owned Romanian rifles made in the exact same factory, he wouldn't have a word of it. Nevermind the fact that both rifles have noticeably different handguards that any moderately trained eye could catch. Stubborn people are fun aren't they?

It’s interesting to note that what you were trained to do seems less risky than other jobs. I was an Airborne Ranger, and I felt like a huge target in an airplane or truck, but let me out and I feel like the scariest thing in the woods. The airplane crew just wants to stay on the plane, the submariner just wants in his boat (I know, I have breakfast with them). The tanker wants in his tank, I imagine, and underway. I also don’t want to be in the tank, I want to be out where I can see, hear, and smell what’s around me. I’m guessing training is designed to make you think you have exactly the right job.

Two things: When I went into the US Army in 1971 I got tricked by my recruiter (big surprise) I was offered one guarantee and one preference. I really wanted to be a tanker, so I thought I had gotten that as my guarantee, and thought it would be nicer to go to Germany rather than 'Nam. So I got the second, spent my first year at Ft Knox and the last two in Bamberg, which was great. But when I finished basic my orders were for armored reconnaissance and intelligence specialist instead of the armor school. Had no idea what that was, and found out I had signed up for 11 Armor, which was 11E at the time but ended up 11D, Recon, which was considered part of Armor. Never got to drive a tank :-( but in the long run being in the Recon platoon got us out of the motor pool much more often than the line animals did. Second thing is that the M114A1E1, for all it's faults, had a huge amount of room in it even if we had a full 3 man crew, which wasn't often. We had to scoot around in it on our butts, but even fully loaded there was plenty of room, never saw the fourth seat, a jump seat really, put to use, and it was easy to stretch out inside to take a snooze.

Having served time in a mech infantry unit in VN I can tell you that volunteering for armor is the last thing I would do. I HATED working with the 1/77 equipped with M48s. Unless then were on a hard road they were a huge PITA. Açav was not so bad, but they used too pair them with a mech infantry platoon for protection, we kept the NVA at arms length with foot patrols so they got less RPGs shot at them. Being dismounted was not part of their operation manual. The upside was fire power much more than a typical infantry platoon when mounted or in a NDP. Downside was the enemy knew how to fight us with minimal casualties. Land mines and 2-4 man RPG teams in the right spot. You can’t ride inside a M113 or this M114 thing with anti-tank mines around. So you gotta ride on top. And you need to get the hell away from it if the RPGs start coming in. Drive a tank? Not this guy. They wanted me to be a track driver but drivers, while they seldom did ambush or other infantry stuff they had to maintain the damned things and I was not going be s grease monkey. And finally as was stated in one of Bill Mauldin’s cartoons of WW-II in Europe as Willie and Joe are looking up from a 1/2 completed fighting position at the TC in a Sherman and one is saying to the tanker; “Not really, a movin foxhole tends to attract the eye”..

One of my favorite stories from WWII British Tankers was offloading after D-Day. They were on American Navy transports, and while waiting their turn to offload, made friends. The Americans saw what the Brits had as side arms, and shook their heads, giving them Thompson's instead. The Americans saw what the Brits had for rations, and again shook their heads. They promptly gave the British tankers all sorts of goods out of the ship's pantry, including canned peaches. The Brits asked if they had to sign for it, and the Americans looked at them rather incredulously. No, the only rule was to not leave any opened box, as that was evidence that something was missing. So the British tankers, with the American seamen's' help, proceeded to unload their tanks, including all of their ammunition besides what was in the turret, and instead filled every nook and cranny with American rations. This was when the artificial harbors were being built, so the beaches were essentially clear, and I imagine the Brits got a few good days of eating before they had to restock with ammo and join the fight.

With regard to flamethrowing tanks, the Germans were hypocrites because there were several case of surviving flamethrowing tank crews being captured alive, in the North West Europe campaign, and being shot out of hand by the Germans, despite the fact that they themselves had been using flamethrowers in manpack and vehicle (tank and half track) form since the start of WW2 and indeed used most of their flamethrowing tanks in the East. There is an anecdote in one British account of the the NWE campaign that British crews found several of their men dead, with their hands tied and clearly shot in a summary execution and were in the mood for taking no prisoners. Their commander, knowing that it could get ugly, is said to have called a local truce and met the Germans under a white flag and made it clear that if any more men were found dead with their hands tied, it would be open season and that all arms would be employed to clear the way. When the Germans complained about the use of flamethrowers, they were reminded that they had used them since the start of the war, weren't shy about using them and that the opportunity to surrender was always presented in advance of the use of flame weapons. Normal service was resumed and no more men were found tied up.......the British tactic was to make a show of force of the flame tanks, with some flaming ahead of the actual target. If they encountered a bunker or fortified building, an unlit shot was fired if the call to surrender was not heeded. If the Germans continued to resist, a lit shot was fired. This either prompted an immediate surrender or the Germans were killed or fled. Even the toughest SS or para would wilt in the face of a flame thrower.

Another point well made by Lindy and The Chieftan is that WWII was primarily about industrial production. Germany was always going to lose the war because they didn't understand (or didn't have the capabilities) that to win they had to out produce their adversaries. Both America and Russia out produced everyone else. America built a town and a massive factory (Willow Run) just to produce B24 Liberator bombers. The Sherman was also designed for mass production and ease of maintenance.
@immikeurnot
@immikeurnot 5 жыл бұрын
At peak production of each; one B24 an hour out of Willow Run, and one Liberty Ship a day from the shipyards. Add to that 2 M4's every hour... 24 heavy bombers a day (just of that one type!), 48 tanks a day, and a ship a day (and again, just the one type) to carry those and other things over to the fight. You just can't win against that. And the longer you hold out, the worse the eventual beat down is going to get.

#Lindybeige Interesting what you said about German efforts to recover their damaged tanks in France. As an expatriate Englishman living in Hamburg since 1970, I used to have an o!d colleague who was a veteran of the 116th Panzer Division that fought in Normandy and later in the Rhineland against the British. He was a member of the tank regiment's recovery and repair unit and I remember him telling me that while the German tanks were generally better than allied tanks, they were technically very complicated and diverse, meaning that spare parts for one mark were often not compatible for another, making repairs at times extremely complicated and/or the supply of spare parts often limited, which reduced the availability of repaired tanks for action. He said exactly the same as you did, that the British tankers just went back to their depots and got a new tank or one easily repaired due to the great supply of spare parts. I just thought that might interest you.

At 6'4.5" tall I found the M48 (the M48A5s belonged to the Army NG and an allied army) and M60 series driver's compartment just a tee tee bit cramped but I dealt with it. When the M1 Abrams came along I found the comfort level in the driver's compartment somewhat better....And then I moved into the comparatively "spacy" fighting compartment of that tank (first edition) as a gunner and later TC and Platoon Sergeant. The tallest (and just all around biggest tanker I ever served with (and went through Basic and AIT with at Ft. Knox in 1980) was a tic under 7'0 tall and weighed in at just under 200 pounds of pure brawn. He basically had to shoehorn himself into ANY position on ANY tank but he ended up being one the finest tankers, TCs and later Platoon Sergeants I had the honor of serving with. I can't imagine either of us crewing on Churchill....You guys were, in my opinion, brave for just cramming yourselves inside of the one featured in this video which I greatly enjoyed!

FD Mackey Merry Christmas ! Thanks for your service . I went Navy when I enlisted in '85 . Sailed on smallboys ( a destroyer and a cruiser ) . The closest I saw to tank crewmen were the crews in the 5 inch gun mounts .

Thank you Lindybeige, I have enjoyed your videos for years, and a few months ago your video here introduced me to the Chieftain for the first time, and I've been eating up all his fascinating videos recently. I've never been a tank guy, my interest has always been in aircraft and warships, but Chieftain has started a new interest for me in armour, and I'm really enjoying it!

My grandpa served in the Czechoslovakian army in 1946-7 and he told me stories how many tankers, especially the drivers, who fought in the west during WW2 (therefore used Churchills, Shermans etc.) absolutely hated the T34. Apparently it was a lot less user friendly...
@lryoung3655
@lryoung3655 6 жыл бұрын
TheJimboslav the t34 was a death trap. My dad did national service in the 50s in Germany and he studied them and said they weren't built for safety. The fuel tanks were right beside the drivers heads for instance.

Helmets went in and out of fashion depending on the commanding officers commitment to "health and safety". Most the time we just wore berets, and I think most people preferred that.

Hey, just curious, what tank did you serve in? I was browsing Wikipedia a couple weeks ago and saw that apparently our armoured forces only had 40 rented leopards and a bunch of APC’s? Is Wikipedia lying to me?

The Churchill you are in, is a 'Crocodile' flamethrower variant, and although the 'link' to the bowser is well thought out, and armoured, there is still the chance of a 'brew-up' incinerating the crew. A quick escape from there is hindered by all the bits you could get snagged on. And knowing what Germans thought of being a target for a flamethrower generally, you'd probably have been shot as you popped out of the hatches.

Every tanker was shot while popping out of the hatches - or at least most, I dare say. Look up the footage of the Panther vs. Pershing duel in Cologne here on YT, i.e. .

It used to be the Crocodile, but they removed the flamethrower. It is matched to the trailer though. They are the same vehicle, just with different belly gunner weapons.

That's some grim shit. Seems like nobody really wins here lol. The guys on the ground getting roasted are probably not to thrilled for obvious reasons. The guys the riding claustrophobic-fiery-death-trap probably aren't too thrilled about getting captured by the guys whose buddies they've been fucking marshmellowing all day long...

From what I read, crocodile tankers would usually just do a wet squirt and give the germans a bit of time to surrender before they light them up. Makes it a bit less nasty if the other fellow simply gives up.

Both the Churchill and the Cromwell were only 8'2" tall; this is tactically cool compared to Shermans, Panthers and Tigers, but is also much more useful for getting under those barriers on carparks meant to keep campervans out.
