My moment was a medieval faire. I had volunteered to assist with the set up and we had just finished late on the Friday afternoon and were about to head home. I looked back over the field towards the sunset, there was not one piece of modernity in sight, smoke was rising from the cooking fires in the encampments, an armoured knight was leading his horse back from a photo call and in the background the crenelations on top of the wall closing off the jousting arena were silhouetted against the western sky. There were the faint sounds of music being played, of people talking and laughing, I was transported back to the middle ages in that instant. I could have stayed in that moment for the rest of my days and been more than happy it was just so amazing.

5 hours?! 🤣 We love Lloyd! Why torture him? That’s an insanely long time. It takes a lot of energy and enthusiasm to be LindyBeige - plus quite a bit of humor. There’s prep work involved, and then taking things down afterwards. Even though he doesn’t cut much, he still has to review the entire video and edit it. You’re asking for probably about 15 hours worth of work, and one incredibly draining shoot. Here’s a better idea. How about he does a 3 hour compilation with clips of videos he’s made in the past - interspersed with his present-day thoughts/reactions to the content. Lloyd can choose the videos he likes best, ones that have a unique story behind them, or ones that he feels are particularly valuable. Then we’ll get an inside look at his perspective and some behind-the-scenes anecdotes! Refreshing some old content will drive more traffic to his past videos, improve his SEO, and it will be a good starter video for people who are new to his channel!

Why draw the comparison with the past? Just say how much you enjoy the present, and justify it with precise reasons.

I had something kind of sublime happen recently. I shoot trap (relative of skeet shooting) and I had been sick and busy for 6 months. During that time I never went out to the gun range and shot. This is important because trap requires a lot of rythem, reflexes and mental clarity. Being able to snap to, then shoot a target consistently as it flies through the air is tricky and usually people have to pratice often to keep up the skill. I was fully expecting to break a mediocre score. Something in the low 90s. Trap is scored in sets of 100 targets. 90/100, while sounding nice, isn't impressive for seasoned shooters. So thats where I was, rusty at my craft and fully expecting to make some idiot mistakes because of it. Well, I walked out to the fireing line, said to myself "Clear your head, it won't be that bad." And 100 targets later I haden't missed a single one. A perfect score after 6 months without practice.

I am so happy for you and everyone who got to experience it. I teared up a bit. I find if you tie the compliment to yourself and your performance with theirs, it reads more genuine. Especially because in a performative act like dancing or singing (for me), so much of it comes from both parties doing their individual parts really well, but also finding a harmony with the cooperative aspect. So, an example of this would look like "I feel as though we were both particularly on form tonight." which is true, since the remarkable aspect of the performance relied on both of you being on point and working well together in that instance. Plus it opens the comment up to getting into the excited minutia of how you were able to pull off the performance so well with the other person, because you can speak for yourself, and they can speak for themselves without either injecting words or interpretations onto the other's experience. I also love this story. I've had a couple of nights like this and it makes my heart happy to hear about them, to think about them, and to know other people have had them.

I myself would lean toward complimenting the moment, "I've never enjoyed [going to the theatre] with you so much, that was great!". Mind you, as this avoids any word on specific improvements, it's likely less than would always be required. Adding a, "You're even better than I remember!" would be sufficient in my book. That said, when giving a real compliment the majority of people will take it as it's meant, so long as you don't do the comedy trope of, "You used to be so terrible at [going to the theatre], what amazing thing happened?"

The word "Improved" implies the negative. There cannot be improvement without a lesser state in the past. So if you simply want to complement them, do so without the past! "Wow, you're good!" will suffice. They know their past and whether or not they've improved and your complement will be sufficient enough to inform them that you've taken notice.
@iota-09
@iota-09 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, just be blunt and simple about it, and if they wanna take it as an insult that's on them, it's still a compliment after all, however it is true that compliments on improvement are a bit more of a grey area unless your relationship with the other person makes it clear you "can" say that(someone who knows how you interact with people well, oe some form of student)

@Deltarious
@Deltarious 3 жыл бұрын
This video is years old at this point, but you can inform someone of how impressed you are at their improvement by only giving them a massive complement, such that the only comparison to how they were previously is implicit and for them to decide. E.g: Wow! Your dancing is amazing! You have not referenced at all how their dancing was previously, but they have also never received such a compliment from you before, and thus this serves as a new baseline for them to compare to, people will generally assume if you have interacted frequently before that previously they did not meet this level, but now they do, but because it is only constructed positively then praise is just about the only way to take it. It also lets you compliment them by comparison in future, too- if you have already told them wholeheartedly that they're 'amazing' and you both believe it , and you inform them later "wow, you're even better than before!" then there is another implicit comparison to the baseline- if they were amazing previously they must be even better now! You can make this more clear by specifying they were previously amazing at this point too, if necessary, but it gets easier from, there.

"everytime we dance together, it seems that it gets better and better, thank you" - said sincerely, I can imagine that this would prevent direct comparison between individual occasions and also be open ended enough so that she can either take it as a compliment (particularly if she is feeling like she has actually improved), but could also be a polite and more general statement about how you enjoy dancing with her

I had a moment like this with my main hobby a while back. I've been playing guitar since a little before I was eight, and it is absolutely ingrained in me. It's actually at the point that if my finger nails break on my right hand (I use them to play) it feels like I've lost a finger. The moment occurred in high school during a school trip. There was this small group of people including a girl I wanted to get on the good side of sitting on a beached dock just off from the beach of a dried up pond. I sat down nearby and began playing. They invited me to come sit with them after a while, which was nice in of itself (I've never had many friends, so it's truly heart warming when someone invites me to anything). After a bit I started playing the most difficult piece I'd learned at that point (if you must know, it's Day Tripper by the Beatles. Not just the chords and other dumb shit, it involves playing multiple rhythms at once with one hand. My brain was fried after I learned it), and after I did this girl turned around (she was talking to someone) and watched me play. She started to smile slightly, the type of smile someone gets when they've just had an experience that lifted them a little. The type you might get when you see someone sharing food with someone in need. My contribution wasn't a significant one, but it clearly made her day a little bit better. I'd been feeling jaded with my hobby at that point, and this experience brought me back into it.

You might be surprised how often this happens while playing ice hockey (or many other sports where the teams can interact). There is a moment like that, during which you and your teammate(s) realize exactly what the opposing players are going to do and without even making eye contact, you just make that gorgeous connection between two (or three or more) skilled players, that results in something beautiful happening.

Mr Beige, To compliment someone on their improvement, just compliment them on their performance. So in your case, just say 'May I say, your dancing is fantastic.' There is no need to acknowledge the change. They know they have practised and to have another competent or better dancer compliment them is good. If the conversation naturally goes to her practice or lessons. then you can say it certainly shows.

I've learned the best way to compliment someone in such a manner is "Wow! You've gotten even better than before, fantastic job!" Step 1 is to acknowledge their past accomplishments, even if there really were few to none. Step 2 is to compliment them on their current accomplishment and/or how far they've come. Step 3 Profit with your minimally backfiring compliment.

Lloyd - You didn’t need to give her the compliment! You gave it to her with that move. It sounded astounding. I wish I had been there to see it! She’s a lucky girl! I bet she felt so beautiful that night. To answer your question, you can talk to her like an equal now. That will show that you’ve noticed her improvement. Complimenting her progress will only demonstrate your superiority and can make a woman feel self-conscious if she’s truly invested in learning the art. Here are some courteous ways to dish out well-deserved flattery: (1) Compliment their above average skill on a specific technique: “Few partners I’ve danced with can X the way that you do.” (2) Ask them a subjective question that requires expertise to answer. “Did you feel that the musical style of the band this evening translated well to creative dancing?” (3) Ask for feedback on a specific move: “In the middle fo the song there, I could have done X, but instead I went with Y. I’m still not sure which would have been better. What do you think?” (4) Indicate they are a seasoned dancer with an “inside joke”: “Don’t you just hate when people walk straight across the dance floor? It’s obvious they don’t dance. An experienced dancer like you or I would know that, no matter how good you are, you’re never going to have eyes in the back of your head!” (5) Compare their style to someone famous or very talented, but when you do, point out a specific thing about their style that makes them similar (or else your flattery might feel disingenuous). Obviously, the common denominator here is to always provide a specific example to back up your compliment. Generalized compliments feel disingenuous. Hope this helps!

Not quite as people-centric as your moment- a friend and I were climbing a hill that led to a cliff over Puget Sound (Washington State, USA). It was starting to drizzle, cold as hell and neither of us were dressed for it but we pressed on, listening to the waves crashing against the cliff base getting louder and louder. We pushed through a screen of saplings at the top of the cliff lust in time to see a bald eagle flapping up from the water, not twenty feet from us, with a five-foot salmon in its talons. The bird saw us and screamed at us as if to say "This one's mine, get your own!" and flapped off to another part of the cliff. The climb was definitely worth it. Eagles are BIG birds.

You simply compliment them on what they're doing right now in this moment. You don't mention the past; you don't associate present performance with past. You simply tell them that they just did this or that thing extremely well. And leave it at that. And that's about as close as you'll ever be able to approach telling (actually NOT telling) someone they've improved.

I generally use superb in my compliment if someone has improved greatly since a previous meeting. Often, 'Wow! That was superb'

For your problem: Link your compliment to the moment, like... Wow you are into it today.

You epitomise the genius, animated wit, of the lesser-spotted rural English eccentric gentleman - I knew one once, like you, he was both fascinating and captivating to listen to. Almost like a voluntary, but highly controlled kind of ‘batshit bonkers’, a dying breed. I’m a 50’somehow Englishman, and I miss having a neighbour or family friend like yourself. With that in mind, how would you feel about living in captivity for the purpose of breeding? Well, breeding *and* public amusement. You’re bloody great old chap.

Whenever I notice people improving, I usually ask people to tell me everything they have learned since the last time. this way you only focus on the positive things, not on 'how shitty' they might have been before

@Lindybeige 'You've become even better at this.' Is the best compromise I can think of to your etiquette-dilemma, although putting it more strongly would not necessarily insult the other person: in my experience, an honest compliment is often felt as one if conveyed as one. 'I see you must have been practicing a lot lately.' is also an option. It shifts the focus from the improvement in skill since last time to the hard work that has gone into it and it's a nice compliment even if the person says afterwards that that was not the case ('I would never have known/guessed if you had not told me.').

"I'd forgotten how good you are". It compliments, and make reference to the fact you have noticed how good she is, with a comparative note. If she then wishes to, and has any humility, she will be critical of her past performance herself, and you can honestly point out her improvement. With muted to gushing praise depending on how she's enjoying it, then let her (if she wishes) steer the conversation to how she has achieved this improvement. We'll make a _lady killer_ out of a Tank Geek yet ;p

Lloyd, just keep it in the present -- tell people they are good at whatever it is they are doing if and when they are good at doing it -- be it dancing, theatre, pottery, etc. Your comparison of their past mediocracy to their present impressive skill is implied within the compliment, as you are only now giving it to them.

To your question about complimenting someones improvement, I think the answer is no; it can be and occaisonally will be taken as a slight, person to person, moment to moment. . I'd choose to compliment their dancing now, irrespective of improvement. I thoroughly enjoyed your story, your enthusiasm was warming. A moment of synchronous triumph.
