Failing that, you could always make a bastard sword, or from the sounds of the audio from 0:03 onward you could make a short or a long sword... (This is an awful joke even for me, jesus christ.)

You all act like he didn't know this was the ultimate test and final step of forming the blade. The slight wonk won't make a huge difference, and he knows he's inexperienced, so even with expert guidance it probably has a fail point or two, I don't think that's why he's nervous.

Being able to flax as far as it did is indicative of tempered martensite. Sure, it may not be an exactly uniform 55HRC across the entire blade, but that is not important to be fully functional as a sword.

That quench operation was fantastically smooth for a novice smith. Well done! I will say though, blue into a light plumb seems a bit soft for a sword temper. I'm used to seeing straws into deeper golds, maybe blueish on the center of the blade.

Lloyd, i think you did an outstanding job, with an EXCELLENT teacher! The final warp can be gotten out in tempering. I would say, from experience with en45 swords, that you have to bend it pretty damn far the other way, rtemper to thw same colors as before, then cool of rapidly in water, should get the blad3 pretty straight.

And here I thought Arnander was a name like Durandal, Hrunting, or Anduril, imbued with ancient magic and fit for a mighty blade. I guess it does have magic of a sort...

Actually you can blue a sword. Some British sabers have blueing combined with gilding to make a very beautiful blade (seen somewhere on scholagladiatoria channel). The Knight Errant has a video about bluing, though it is about armor, not swords.

If I'm not mistaken, the color of the rust depends on the thickness of the rust layer. You can see this effect with bismuth as well and it's a lot more intense.

Thomas Raahauge Well how does the magic of the Noldor work? Does it detect DNA? Or biographical history? Or is it more like JavaScript, and what an orc *is* defined by the enchanter? If the latter be true, the blade would always glow around any modern Englishmen, considering the Normans and such. If the second be true, the blade would glow for anyone born in France, but we all agree king Richard was an Englishman... If that latter be true, what if the definition of being “French” changes? For example, the definition of the French in Napoleon’s day would be much different from a modern or medieval one... Since Orcs were originally elves before Morgoth corrupted them, and the blades don’t glow around elves, it can’t be purely genetic. Likewise, orcs come from everywhere in middle earth...

perhaps the defenition of an orc is, like you said, elves that have been corrupted by Morgoth, and that's the defenition for the magic.

We mortals are but shadows and dust, and I have no wisdom, no insights to offer, that would even come close to match your enlightened words. I shall, however, stand by my meager words and claim, that the blade glows - be the glow blue or beige - upon the proximity of sentient entities that include the consumption of frogs in their diet.
