Thanks for the beautiful work, Javed! I’m truly honored to be the subject of your doc! We spent hours upon hours talking about my experience, and you crafted it all into a story that’s so much bigger. I can only hope I did the same with Majora’s Mask. Thank you to everyone who read my words in the game and watched my story here. My heart containers are forever full.

@ThePantsarama thanks so much for getting this translated for us! Majora's Mask has been my all time favorite since I first played it back then. The stories of the people of Termina pull on my heart strings. Fictional they may be, but as I found out in this video, it was an illustration of what the makers were experiencing. Just... wow. Job well done, sir!

Fantastic doc. I didn't know about the writers' side of the story, how they wove loneliness and tragedy into the game to reflect their own feelings about being away from home and family. That puts it in a different light entirely.

To me, and I think to many people, the most important aspect of Majora's Mask has to be the dialogue. Obviously the gameplay, music and everything else has to work as well to make a great game. But at it's core Majora's Mask is known for it's characters. All the different side quests you can do. Learning their schedules throughout the three days. Trying to solve their problems. All of this would have never been the same if the dialogue and text just wasn't right. Now, I grew up with the german translation of this game, all Zelda games in fact, and over time as I started to understand English a lot better, I started to go through these games with my second language. And seeing the difference between those two languages shows that trying to translate something into a new language? It will never be perfect. Things will always get lost even if it's just the tiniest piece. It will drown in this large language gap. Especially with a language translation from Japanese into English. (The biggest example to me will always be how Saria's German name is Salia, which is derived from how the R and L are very, if not identical in Japanese) Seeing all the work and struggles that are put into trying to create an authentic and true to the game's story translation, it really makes you appreciate the text and dialogue a lot more. Because without these people, we would not have the stories that we have today.

ok but I need to know- what’s the full story behind “You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?” it’s not only of the most iconic zelda quotes, but one of the most iconic quotes from any video game ever. was it a direct translation from japanese? does the japanese text read the same way with the same tone? or was its literal translation something different and jason put a spin on it to really emphasize the peculiarity of the happy mask salesman?? amazing video!!

Thinking back to Majora's Mask's English dialog, it seemed at times to be a little awkward, but it was never hard to understand what was going on and the whole text was oozing with character in a way that was rare for the time. In retrospect, the huge rush and the size of the workload probably account for the slight awkwardness. The setting and story are inherently odd and sometimes intentionally uncomfortable, so i think it worked out really well. ❤️

i hope you see this, because it's rare that i get to personally tell an artist what their work means to me. Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda, it's a piece of art that has fundamentally altered my development as a human being. it's a story about radical empathy, about the meaning of altruism in the face of nothingness. it's about finding peace in grief, and has given me the courage to reach out and offer aid in the face of overwhelming forces. it's a piece of art that has made me, and anyone who engages with its themes, a better and more empathetic person. the world is a better place for having this story be told. Genuinely, thank you for your efforts in bringing it to more people.

MM is far superior than OOT in terms of dialogue, storyline and dwelves deeper into the interlinked stories of Termina. With the 3 day reset, is truely is a dwelve into time and philosophy. What an amazing game, it initially probably didn't taste as good as the previous game but it sure has aged well like a bottle of wine.

I remember in my first play through the particular moment while wearing the Gordon mask you had to calm down a crying Gordon baby by playing them a lullaby. I first played Majora's Mask in 2020. The game was 20 years old at the time, but it had just the right impact it was supposed to have. The dialogue is one of the greatest things about it, as it really put the humanity of every character feel real, even for a fantasy story. As a lifelong Zelda fan, I tried a number of times to play Majoras Mask, but I just couldn't stay with it because of the game structure, always feeling under pressure and trying to manage my time while taking in the game's environment. MM may not be a game I will put time into, but I have watched a full playthrough and totally understand how special and wonderful it is. Jason, you did an amazing job bringing these characters to life and giving them meaning and purpose for the player to invest in. I'm very excited for a years' worth of Zelda content! I hope the following videos focus on the other mainline Zelda titles that delve deeper into their themes.

Jason, you’re my hero! MM is my favorite game, and growing up I’ve repeatedly had the thought of how impressive it is that the Japanese came over to English in such a fun, fluid and magical way. The games dialogue genuinely has been one of my biggest inspirations in my own writing, amazing job conveying the mood and attitude of the world. Appreciate you! Any more work of yours we can check out?

Thanks so much, Steven! I'm blown away by your generous compliments. Real heroes wear tunics, but I'll take it! I also co-wrote the screen text for Yoshi's Story with my colleagues at Nintendo Power. The only other writing of mine I'll tout here is that I wrote the script for an animated short called "Yuletide Tech" that was a DVD extra for Disney's Prep & Landing. Otherwise, I'm staying creative in other ways, posting daily illustrations on Instagram and doing cool stuff for a major streaming platform.

@@ThePantsarama that’s kind of mind blowing… you worked on a couple of GIANT games, and it’s not something you did or continued to do on the regular. Way to make the most of these opportunities. It must feel so weird to play games that you wrote the dialogue for… like an out of body experience. Man, I miss Nintendo Power. That was such a highlight in my childhood/teenage years. KZbin is my new Nintendo Power. Free videos like this one were unimaginable in the Nintendo Power era.

Absolutely love your work! The OoT documentary is still my absolute favorite piece of media out there. And this documentary about MM’s translation was so interesting! Thank you so much to you and Jason for this unique and well-executed topic!

This was my first favorite game and remains so to this day. When I was at work doing a repetitive task, to pass the time I'd play the whole game in my head, start to finish, getting all the masks. This game means so much to me. Brilliant work.

Jason and Javed, it's people like you two, who both are endlessly creative and talented, yet also humble and grounded, that make this such a rich platform, and make the zelda series the deeply beloved adventure it is. I'll never forget the first time I played majora's mask via the 3DS remake- I was months away from graduating high school, and I was simultaneously elated and terrified. I was excited to be moving on to bigger and better things, and proud of how far I'd come thus far, but was hurting to know how much I was leaving behind, and nervous and scared about what lay ahead. I had no idea how much my time in termina would capture and parallel those thoughts and feelings, and I'll never forget it. Thank you Jason, for your contribution to one of my most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had, and thank you Javed, for sharing this with us.

You're so very welcome! I'm glad you found the game so relatable -- so much of that was what the development team was feeling and I knew I had to capture those feelings when I met them.

Thank you for this video-it’s a gem. Makes me appreciate the entire team at Nintendo who provided me, as a child, the spirit of hope, love, and wonder despite all of the darkness and isolation present in our world. Majora’s Mask, rightfully so, continues age incredibly well over time.
