I talked with Andrea about the low key and she insisted that the group for whom she was writing it, wanted it set low. I told her that for a teenaged choir, we took it up a minor third; it worked brilliantly and Andrea said - GREAT! I have no compunction about changing the key if it suits the choir, makes it better for the singers technically, and keeps the timbre of the piece appropriate. Start on middle C (C4) and hear how the sops soar up to F5 - gorgeous!

I've had the privilege of skype calling Andrea Ramsey with my chorale class. We are performing her song "A Letter From A Girl To The World" and it's an absolutely beautiful song. She's an amazing person, singer, and composer, and I'm grateful that I have the experience of singing one of her pieces in concert as well as getting a chance to sing it for her as well and having her tell us what she wanted from that piece as well as giving us pointers. Amazingly talented and a very amazing person overall.

Word is that the Central High School Choir, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will be performing this lovely piece of music in Chicago during the week of March 21st. (Tentatively: at the WIllis Tower, Lincoln Park Zoo, Field Museum, and Glen Bard East High School) Check them out on Facebook under Central High Music Department. Central High School is one of the oldest continuously operating schools in the country, a magnet school for top students in the city of Philadelphia, one of the most diverse schools in the nation.

I hope I don't come off as hateful saying this, but I find a bit of fault in the ending of the poem. The whole song talks about how women of previous generations were strong, physically and mentally, despite the (implied here) misogynistic circumstances they grew up under. Then the ending comes, and the singer (presumably a woman of a later generation) laments that she's not as strong... why? Because she has many more choices for work, being able to choose between physical and mental work, because she's being more and more respected and faces less discrimination than the women in previous generations did? If anything, it should have been a lesson that would help the young woman eliminate the negative thoughts the still-present misogyny instilled in her, as she would think "My grandmother wouldn't be as respected as a human being as I am - yet she could still kick butt, fend for herself and her family and still have a bright mind." What's more inspiring? For her to lament how "weak" she is due to the less unbalanced gender gap, or for her to roll up her sleeve and say "We can do it!" ?

Yes!! Thank you. The song is so beautiful and empowering of all the hardship women have faced, and then the end completely shames and puts down women of today. Such a disgrace, and unempowering thing to do. Very disappointed looking back now.

@@HalLeonardChoral That's still too low. Sopranos shouldn't be made to sing below a Bb in choir.
