Linear Time-Invariant Systems

In this video, Professor Emil Björnson explains what a linear time-invariant (LTI) system is, and how such systems interact with signals. In particular, examples of linear and non-linear are provided, as well as examples of time-invariance and time-varying systems. These concepts underpin the study of communication systems, where the communication channel is a system.

What is the significance of identifying whether or not a system is an LTI system? Sure, we defined it, but why is it important in communication systems? Where is this seen in application?

The filtering performed by an LTI system is fully determined by the impulse response or its Fourier transform, which is otherwise not the case. The LTI property is essential to developing simple ways to relate the received signal to the transmitted signal. All the standard system models and transmission methods that you can find in textbooks on digital or wireless communications build on an LTI assumption. Many of these methods are used in practical systems.
