Today we will be checking out Parkhurst guitars with Jake Parkhurst. He was a lovely chap and had a great new idea about putting linear pots on the volume of his guitars. It makes them really bright along with his self built pickups!

You know, when I think back on each of the other boutique guitar builders you’ve shown, each of their guitars look and sound unique to one another. Such creative people out there!

These are beautiful! I love natural wood, it's so much nicer than paint or dye. I'd like to own one of these, they sound excellent too! It's cool that the S-type had no switch in the way.

Pots that actually work like every other pot in world excepting electric guitars? Huzzah! Finally, a maker with some sense. Other than that, what a beautiful range of guitars all done in that magnificent old mahogany. Great video, Mike, and I hope Parkhurst sells those beauties.

different tapers for different capers:), even a "dodgy" little audio taper Alpha pot has ended up one of my favorites, the limited 6(almost off)-10(full) range makes it ideal for aggressive volume swells, and even delicate Nashville steel slide volume swells too if controlled well. Very cumbersome to dial in an overdriven p90 for example tho. Other pots can be too subtle in taper for crazy swells,...but thats why they invented low friction ones i guess. i guess the only really bad pot is a scratchy one. Cool vid, ... this düd is winding some phat AF pickups right there!:) by your expression they looked like they had a bit of a kick in 'em🤘

Great upload Mike, those are all beautifully made instruments that sound awesome so thank you for giving them some airtime. Personally I can’t bring myself to buy a guitar that doesn’t appeal aesthetically, as I always seem to get drawn to beautiful pieces of wood, although they still need to play well and sound good obviously. That way they can be both sonic and visual pieces of art.

Really cool setup with those pots. When I was first hearing it, it reminded me of when I was sent a 250k (by mistake) and put it into my 7 string with SD Pegasus/Sentient. It had this weird quack and jangle sound to it, and I couldn’t figure out why. I finally realized that instead of a 500k with a treble treble bleed, it was actually a linear 250k. I ended up getting the right pot, but I learned a ton about wiring and electronics from that mess. I always thought it would be cool to put linear pots in a guitar to get that really brittle sound because it’s so cool for some things. Mainly, I learned how much pots really have an affect on your tone, and that the assertion that 500k pots are “brighter” is not inherently true. There is so many variables with pots and pickups, it’s fun to play around with different combinations to see what they do. It’s not always what you expect.

It's made me want to play around with pots and resistors and see what tones I can get. Treble bleeds, linear pots, different switching etc. All good fun and something different. 😀

I like the origin story of the woods, makes me wonder if a guitar could come with a what3words location engraved in it somewhere if the tree's position was known. :) (I smile, but I'm serious)

What if I told you that you can make any function of potentiometer you like, even reverse logarithmic, just by adding a resistor... and furthermore,, none of this will have any impact on tone. 500k (or 250k) impedance is the same regardless of how you get there. If you want to go brighter, increase the impedance with a 1M pot,,, a good idea in fact if you're using high output pickups (say 15k+).

Great guitars! However the Idea of using linear taper pots as volume in guitars isn’t exactly new. I have been doing for at least the past ten years. And I think I stole the Idea from the brilliant Simon Farmer of Gus Guitars, who had been doing it for many years, when I first heard about it.
