Sure...the courtesans are horrible liars. Although, they'd probably be beaten, starved or worse by those who owned them if they lose their clients. But also, the men who would promise to free them, to marry them, to love them, etc and who never did. Someone who is lonely, forced to please men all day long who only care about themselves...would probably fall in love often and then get disappointed. Again and again. And somehow this "well if you really love me then you would..." arms race resulted in a weird double suicide obsession. Even thought I conceptually understand it is still pretty bizarre. It is interesting how heavily this whole thing is tied into the fantasy created by literature. To the point where double suicide stories were banned because people kept being inspired to do it. The Edo government was often censor happy but that one I kind of get. It's like if the scenario of Romeo and Juliet was a lot more similar to real life and didn't have those comedic contrivances that get them to commit suicide, so people in those situations thought it was the best way to show thier love if they couldn't be together.
@insertname3977 Жыл бұрын
You also have a culture that doesn't shun suicide for the most part compared to Christian Europe where suicide is one of the worst sins you could ever commit. It's also part of the reason why the ending of Romeo and Juliette is suppose to be considered obscene because of the fact that they damn their eternal souls for such a fleeting moment of "love".
@kellharris2491 Жыл бұрын
But another thing is that life is sometimes awful. For them suicide was in many ways honorable. So they get 'relief in death' but also a measure of honor. I can see why it is so common even now.

Selling Women by Amy Stanley is a great book introducing historical prostitution in Japan. Prostitutes were mostly children sold into slavery by families who couldn't afford them; swords were kept away from them so they couldn't kill themselves. The only way out was for someone to buy her freedom, and hopefully to become a mistress (as a "fallen women" she probably couldn't marry). It's depressing and grotesque, but fascinating to read their stories.
@magnadramon0068 Жыл бұрын
This was mainly true for women in the red light districts during the Edo period. Originally Japanese sex workers worked independently. But the vilification of sex work by religious authorities, led to the creation of red light districts by the Tokugawa Shogunate in order to control sex workers. And any sex workers that worked outside of the red light district were punished and forced to work inside the red light district against their will.

Damn is this a depressing subject, sex workers are treated pretty awful in almost every era of every land, which sucks when you think about it, most women are forced into it, have to endure it for their time doing it and apparently in the edo period in Japan the clients added a whole other ego based, creepy layer on top of the basic sex the women had to perform to survive. I’ve never understood why any man would want to have sex with someone who really doesn’t want to have sex them, it’s beyond creepy. You have to be some kind of pathetic guy to hire a prostitute to have sex with you

That is exactly why this scheme of lying exists. Because they want it to feel real, even if it really isn't.
