"Anhalten" is only used for stopping movement, and almost exclusively for vehicles like cars, bikes or trains. E.g. "Ich halte (mit dem Auto) an." --> I stop the car. or "Das Auto hält an." --> The car stops. Sometimes, it can be used transitively, e.g. to stop somebody who is driving, e.g. "Die Polizei hält den Wagen an." --> The police stops the car. or "Ich halte das Taxi an." --> I make the Taxi stop. Without the intention to confuse you, I wanna mention that "anhalten" can have an entirely different meaning, too. It can be used almost synonymously for "andauern" wich means to last, to persist (e.g. "Der Regen hielt einige Stunden an." --> The rain lasted for several hours.) Edit: In a few occasions, it can be used for stopping walking people, too. (E.g. "Die Passanten wurden angehalten." - The pedestrians were stopped.) That's not too common, though. And "anhalten" can have a third meaning, too: to encourage, urge, coerce somebody to do something, e.g. "Ich hielt ihn dazu an, schneller zu fahren." --> I urged him to drive faster. "Aufhören" on the other hand means to stop doing a certain activity/action and usually requires a second verb infinitive + "zu". E.g. "Ich höre auf zu rennen." --> I stop running. It can be used intransitively too, though. E.g. "Der Sturm hörte auf." --> The storm stopped. "Halten" doesn't really have the meaning "to stop", with a few exceptions like "Haltet den Dieb!" --> Stop the thieve! Usually, it just means "to hold" and a few variations of it.
