This Muppet was before Ernie. "Sir Linit" was from 1967, Ernie first appeared on TV on November 10, 1969. Jim Henson and his Muppeteers may have recycled Sir Linit's eyes and nose when he created Ernie.

"Sir Linit distinguished himself before his lord in 1342, during the Second War of Scottish Independence, when he bravely cut down 16 marauding Scots who came to raid his lordship's estate. As the story goes, Sir Linit cleaved one man in twain so cleanly, he fell to the earth as two. Later he would lead a small band of warriors on a counterattack on a nearby Scottish settlement. Nary a man, woman nor child were left alive as the ashes still cooled as the dawn broke. Sir Linit passed away in the night on September 28, 1362, his body ravaged by syphilis and gout. Nope. He loads the laundry basket with all the books and stuff he wants to use while the clothes are getting washed, then skips out of actually washing them because there’s no room left in the basket for clothes. This is from one of a handful of really old sketches where Ernie has his own room, completely filled with junk.
