After he died, the band released a statement including this: "We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human."

The sample in the intro was a chord progression played on acoustic guitar. They liked the sound and the chords, but found the guitar made it a little too folksy, so Mike reversed the the recording, and then split apart the chords to put them back in the original order. They did all this while they were on tour, because they had a recording setup in their tour bus so they could play with sounds and ideas while on the road. They were innovators when it came to that kind of thing. And after all the accusations after the first album that they were a manufactured band, they started taking a videographer with them all the time to document their process (something Mike describes in the Fort Minor track "Get Me Gone"), so you can actually watch video of this moment on the tour bus when Mike was playing with this sample.

I miss Chester so much. Everyone who was going though depression could relate to this music and know the weren't alone. Chester (Linkin Park) saved so many of us. I wish we could have done the same for him. He had a rough life. He was sexually abused by a family friend from the age of 7 to 13. He finally told his father, who ironically was a vice officer. Chester didn't press charges when he found out his abuser had also suffered the same abuse. I don't know if I would have done the same. Chester had a drug and alcohol problem for a long time. He had cleaned up. He does have videos you can watch where he explains what his depression was like. Really sad. He was a caring loving person. If you get a chance he has a live video that he is really close to his fans. Crawing- One more light live. Also anything from live from Red Square. All amazing. They were even better live. Miss you Chester..

This is a very positive song, actually. It does speak about darkness and struggle at first, but all throughout the chorus is the want to feel better, to do better, to recover from pain and all the hurt of the past. Finally, in the bridge, Chester speaks with conviction. "I will break away - I will find myself today." Not "I'm going to try", or "this might happen" - no. "I WILL find myself," and "today". It is clear intention and drive to come to a better place. I think him sleeping with the smoke curling around him in the end is merely meant to represent coming to a place of inner peace. His conviction is clear - in just that, he has already reached a better place than he'd started, and can rest. The fire is extinguished and he is safe.

9:15 I actually believe the total opposite is true. The reason this music exists is because of times like you describe and the people who relate to them the most do so because of shared similar experiences. This music is often the only time they feel understood. Without this music they might think they were completely alone but you can listen to a song and realize that someone else has felt this way too. It gives you the hope you need to keep going.

I know it seems counterintuitive, but there's catharsis in hearing someone articulate and put to music all of the terrible feelings you feel. It doesn't work for everyone, but for alot of people, tapping into and entertaining the darker and more depressing parts of your psyche via emotional music is the exact release needed to work through those feelings. You said we were all created for a purpose, if God truly has a purpose for all of us, then Chester's purpose was absolutely to guide millions upon millions of people, myself included, through a darkness that he himself was lost in. It's a twisted and unfair irony, but fulfill that purpose he did. I believe his effect is immeasurable. Much love brother ✊🏼 R.I.P. Chester

The characters are water and fire which is funny because Chester was born on the last day of the Pisces sign (March 20th). So he was a mixture of Pisces and Aries which are fire (Aries) and water (Pisces). Chester had koi fish on both his upper arms and flames on both of his wrists to represent the signs he was made up of. They had Brad's Hybrid Theory guitar in the music video. After Hybrid Theory went Platinum Chester got 2 Linkin Park tattoos and Brad got a guitar with the soldier with dragonfly wings from Hybrid Theory album art work on the body of a guitar. It is the red guitar in the guitar stands.

The sample that the song opens with is actually Chester playing the acoustic guitar. I think it was Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn who took that recording, cut it into four parts (1-2-3-4), reversed the chords (so it played 4-3-2-1), and flipped the audio backwards (so it retained the 1-2-3-4 chord progression).

The point of this video is that it's all a dream, the paintings of the elephants, the Mechas, the crocodile, they're all mending together inside Chester's dream. But of course, as any piece of art, you can make your own interpretation of it. Here's mine (and why I feel so identified with both the music video and the lyrics): When I was diagnosed with PDD, I had (and still have, unfortunately) a tendency to just throw myself at my bed to just sleep and forget about everything. My then psychologist explained to me that my room and my bed was "my safe haven" and that it was constantly pulling me in, preventing me from facing the outside world. Everything I needed, my guitars, my action figures, my paintings (just about the same things Chester finds refuge in this video clip), they were all there in my room to make me feel "safe". "Hollow and alone, and the fault is my own" sums up why I ended up with presistent depression, by isolating myself in my room, alone, just because a few bad people wronged me. Then we have "I will never be anything 'til I break away from me. I will break away and find myself today", which deeply resonates to my constant struggle of escaping myself from doing this to myself, from just lying in bed hoping my dreams erase what I feel is haunting me. But in reality, what was really haunting me was taking refuge in my little room. This song was a wake-up call to battle that urge of just closing my eyes and actually break away from my supposed "safe haven" that was now turned into my own personal prison. I know this wasn't the "official" meaning of the music video and the song, but it just so deeply resonates with me.

I can‘t agree with that to be honest. Linkin Park is the perfect Band to listen if you feel down, they where and still are able to help so so many people with the music. And that makes it even more painful that Chat chose his way out… he is still badly missed. As a normal dude with the same sickness in his head.. i can relate to most of the songs.. if your in this place, in this sea of nothingness, there isn‘t much for you to feel.. every now and then its a feeling of sadness or anger, but thats it. Linkin Park ALLWAYS helped me at my darkest points. Thats why i‘m still here. And now after Chat left us, WE have to fight, because we have to #MakeChesterProud

It helped me process my anger and sadness and allowed me to express it somehow (something I've always struggled to do). It's great to exorcise your demons in a way. I’m so glad you loved the song 😊 I Looked up about the meaning of the Chinese characters and the video: The band's turntablist, Joe Hahn, directed the music video. It begins with Chester Bennington walking into a room that bears the Chinese characters for fire and water on the door. As he falls asleep, the symbols come alive in his dream as the band performs in front of flames and Shinoda raps in front of a waterfall. Hahn told MTV of the concept: "It's another very visual concept. It's basically a dream sequence that's taking place, and the familiar objects in the room are turning into the reality, which is the dream, which is not the reality. It's a whole play on your mind” I Didn’t know whether to post this comment or not because it’s so difficult but ..This song for me is about breaking free from the pain and loneliness of child trauma/S abuse and all the baggage it dumps on you. And finding somewhere I belong. “Till I break away from me” (powerful words!) as a child you feel powerless with no one to protect you to give you comfort. And you’re silenced (“nothing to say”) by fear. The dream sequence is so relatable because of disassociating to somewhere in your mind as a coping mechanism too. And as an adult desperately wanting to break away and heal from the pain of the abuse and the damage that its done (to “erase it all till it’s gone”) It’s a mountain to climb but I know im not on my own there’s so many others who are on the same journey as me ( like Chester was) we can help each other and we can conquer it!!! “I’ll breakaway I’ll find myself TODAY” Love your wise words Chris you are so right Thankyou! 💗🫶🏻💗

I'm dealing with pretty bad depression as well and I love to listen to songs like that but it makes you kinda accept your illness instead of fighting with it... which makes you even more depressed at the end. Listening to something happier and uplifting is way better. Depends on the stage of your depression I guess. Chris encouraged me to fight and I'm changing my life now but I'm still having those days sometimes when all I want to do is to end it. I'm trying to avoid listening to my old "depressed playlist" to not fall into that pit of feeling sorry for myself again. It's kinda like addiction. I've quit smoking, haven't touched a cigarette for 16 months now and I know that I'd fall right back to that addiction if I took one puff.
