Reading comments and people be like "SHOULD BE 120dB". Have you ever withstood 110dB LAEQ for an entire song to say that ? That's how you get deaf. People need to understand loudness and respect the music.

Marc Zedda i remember I was sitting right by the sound desk at a concert once and these techs were like 20 and they were pumping out sound at like 170db and I leaned over and said "hearing damage starts at 90" they just looked at me and said "oh shit..." He turned it down next song to about 110db...

Look up the decibel scale, you don't seem to understand it... a jet engine is around 135-140dB, you would be permanently damaged at 140dB, 100dB is 10x the power factor of 90db and 110 is 10x the power factor of 100dB and 1000x power factor of 90dB... 170dB is quite loud... your PA would't be able to reach that :')

"we dont want to anyone coming to our concert to lose their hearing"......sir 100DBA for 2 hours will cause temporary threshold shift in hearing and probably permanant threshold shift.. 100DBA is only safe for 5-15 minutes MAX. no way in hell would I go to this concert without ear plugs. motorhead plays at 116-122DBC on the front row and is considered the loudest band so yes you are "quiet" compared to them and others. note, in my personal home stereo I listen at 90-105DBC and 80-95DBA but I limit my sessions to 30 minutes-1 hour for 2-3 days a week only. 100DBA is extremly loud and uncomfortable to my ears and 110DBA is utterly insane. if anyone doesnt believe 100DBA is "that loud" it is proof you have already ruined your hearing and have a 20-50DB loss in hearing. look at pete townsend, phil collins, etc.. NO concert is worth ruining your hearing over.
@larssonphoto
@larssonphoto 6 жыл бұрын
Do you have any proof of what you are saying? 100dB isn't extremely loud, that is the recommended upper level here in Sweden but the legal limit is around 106-107 if there are no kids around... But you measure loudness over time, 100dB LAeq over 1 hour, so if you play at like 95dB at the beginning you can play a bit louder at the end of the concert. There are no problem with playing 100dB for a 2-3 hour concert and it will not cause any permanent hearing damage... I measure EVERY concert I do and I ALWAYS follow the legal limits.

That's right..it's true across the spectrum. I'm not scared of a consol. Mic placement gain structure, EQ and high pass..I like my comps and gates though. A bit of FX. It takes a long time to completely know every parameter of a digital console. for live concerts 90 % of that isn't needed.

I remember seeing VH outdoors I think it was a monsters of rock concert at giants stadium? It was a long time ago,. I was on the floor, all groups were fine volume wise, but then VH came on,. I was there by the stage for a very short time before I had to get away from the stage. I mean far away. It was so fucking loud for no reason. My ears hurt right now just thinking about it.

at 100db you can have hearing damage in 10 minutes. at 90 db only after 1 hour. something to think about when you say 100 db is not that loud. With the gear and line arrays you use to get a good spreading it can probably be a nice volume at 95 db over 15 minutes or less i tink.

It is the digital mixer i would say cz u have almost everything virtually available infront of you but in an analog mixer you need to get external racks to solve the same and it might hinder the work flow a bit
@larssonphoto

I would say if you can’t handle the analog gear and know how all of that works then you’re not ready to go digital yet!

I grew up with analog, and i still prefere it for most cases. I think it comes down to personal preferences and what you can handle more self insured. For example i feel safer because navigation and reaction Times just work better for me.

Both are good although you have double the setup time with analog plus if someone turns a knob it’s harder to figure out where it’s at the digital stuff these days sounds great it’s clean easy to setup and more consistent but I think we can all agree is if you polish a turd it’s still a turd in other words if the band sucks or nothing is miced properly or drums are not tuned it’s gonna make your life hard as an engineer

@miicar204
@miicar204 6 жыл бұрын
run a club/synth EQ on a straight rock song, and all you will hear is bass and resonating tones...ie, massive setting changes all the way through the chain, from input to main out, for different styles of music. preset song settings on a digital board make this and other issues (quick singer, band changes) one touch simple, instead of having to ref your paper notes and set all the knobs and switches manually!

Could probably save a pile of setup time by cutting the PA in half if you are running it at 100dB and still get the coverage.
@Thetimrobertson
@Thetimrobertson 7 жыл бұрын
Length of array determines the lowest frequency it will have pattern control for. Making it smaller means the sound will suffer at lower freq's and create more bleed on to the stage. Also, more boxes means better resolution in terms of even coverage front to back. So no, fewer boxes is not a good idea.

+Dee Znutz it's difficult to really TALK about sound stuff. It's very intuitive and technicality really just adds weight to the task of conveing something that you do. This is somewhat the beauty of true sound engineering, you don't really KNOW what you are doing, it's rather based on feeling and when you feel (or hear) what you want to acheive then the technicality just helps you acheive it. So even if the guy sounds unconvicing then what does he care, he's probably having a great time doing what he does. And TBH I think he knows what he's talking about, perhaps the receiving end might be the problem here.

If someone reads this, then please feel free to correct me, because I am NOT an expert. From what I have understood db is relative to whatever reference you are measuring, but he clearly says db(a), where 0 db(a) is 20 micro pascal. Doesn't that make it absolute? Or are you referring to something else?

@TheUckles 2 жыл бұрын
@@musicinyouandme db is a direct conversion from pascal into a logarithmic scale, dba is a filter applied to these that is supposed to mimic the human ear (we hear low frequencies alot quieter so you can go ham with them without hearing damage)
