One of the key features missing from the Linksys Velop is the ability to send an alert when an unknown device connects to the network for the first time. In this video I create my own Python script to do this; it listens to the MQTT alerts from the Linksys Velop and sends an email when a new device is detected.
The Python script can be downloaded from the link below. I accept no responsibility for any issues experienced while using this script, it is provided as is with no expectation of support. Having said that, if you do have questions, post them below and I will try my best to answer.

Hi, Thanks for this video really useful. Do you know if a message is triggered as you move between velop nodes? or if there is a way to retrieve what devices are currently connected to which nodes? and when you leave the network? I am thinking of making some presense sensors in my home automation that will be able to know when i arrive, which part of the house i'm in (based upon which node im connected too), when i leave etc etc

Hi Louis, since posting this video I’ve replaced my Velop system with Unifi access points. Unfortunately that means I can’t test anything, but from memory I am pretty sure that the MQTT broadcast occurs every time a device connects to a node. That should mean you will see multiple broadcasts as a device moves between the nodes in the house. Sorry I can’t give definite answers and good luck with your project, it sounds very interesting!
