Yeah I've heard Prince mostly used the LM1, because it had indivdual tuning per drum sound. Some people say he also used the LM2 on some tracks, not sure about that. The LM2 had crash cymbals (the LM1 did'nt have) but of course Prince could drum (and had drummers) that could overdub crash parts and percussion. I like it that Prince did'nt use drum machines because he had to, but because he wanted a certain sound. If he felt live drum suited a track better, he went with that!

I can see elements of the Linndrum design on everything from modern grooveboxes like the Elektron Digitkat (look at those buttons!, Akai MPC which of course was also originally designed by Linn and everything that has swing (even DAWs). You're right about the Linndrum sometimes being hard to tell from real drums, if well programmed. @@DyReckProductions Between the LinnDrum (and the subsequent drum machines released) combined with the use of recorded studio musician backing tracks for disco there were numerous flies in the ointment as far as employability for drummers beginning in the mid to late 70's moving forward. These shifts in technology combined with the advent and refinement of sampling have all moved music production ever further away from live drummers. With some noteworthy exceptions (such as Bobby Simmons of Stetsasonic and then Questlove of The Roots) who are decidedly outliers in the realm of performed drumming. This moving away from real human drummers has even expanded into the lineups composing bands from several other genres of music, such as Rock and Pop. Granted, there have been and continue to be pushbacks from live drummers and with certain subgenres of music but at this point the gate has been opened and the cow has left the pasture. And it's not coming back.

@@DyReckProductions Right. At this point it's about done as far as waiting for any sort of solo from anyone is concerned except for in jazz. And realistically virtually nobody listens to live jazz. Much less new live jazz. And even less new live jazz which bothers to really incorporate much in the way of true long form solos. To argue otherwise would be woefully ignorant of the overall path music has taken at best. Intentionally disingenuous and/or dishonest at worst. People sample tons of live jazz (including live jazz solos) but once again that stuff isn't as likely to be from new live jazz performances that got recorded recently as they are to be from decades old live recordings of jazz performances that got taped and put on wax years ago. The world of music production is now largely and rather firmly in the hands of producers (and engineers) and increasingly less in the hands of musicians who actually play instruments first and foremost.
