Was it a case of producers being more creative with limited technology back then or are these sounds actually better than modern day machines? They seem to sit in a mix very well and seem timeless to my ears but some kids might think its all rather dull? Its amazing that for an 'untuned' instrument that a drum machine or drumkit can evoke so many 'musical' memories. I'm not sure i'd guess many songs today based purely on the drumtrack.

I watched all three videos with my jaws on the floor ... man these rhythms and sounds are IT, they are EXACTLY the ones I remember from the music from the 80s. I have heard all the well known records so many times I can tell by ear if something's not right in the rhythm but you recreated them SPOT ON. Kudos for bringing these musical memories.

@GNeuman Sorry, the Linn LM-1 did indeed come out in 1980, but Numan didn't use it on Telekon, for sure

The Linn Drums we're also used in classic hip hop songs in the 80s and used in Yah Mo Be There by James Ingram.

Just epic! Great work! "777-9301" is just killer. Thanks for putting all of this together.

Que chingoneria de demostración, sin duda lo mejor para producir "beats" y golpes de tambor son los Linn Drums y cajas de ritmo!!!

@markkeogh18 Numan only started using a Linn Drum on Dance, as they first came out in 81 and Telekon was released in 1980..I guess you could be referring to the very distinctive detuned handclap sound that was first used on the track on Dance called "Nightalk" ? If so, then this sound was also all over Numan's next album in 1982, "I Assassin" If this is it, then essentially the sound from the Linn is the Handclap sample but detuned down a few notes...Add reverb to taste...Hope this helps.GNeuman

Clear quality, What would us musicians do without samplers??!!! BTW, I like the loop of forward and reverse handclaps on Janet Jackson "Control" I really like how your Korg is set up in the same manner as the 808

Nice! It's weird hearing the drums without the music. There's alot going on in the drums in some of the songs, like, obviously 777-9311. I could just happily listen to the drums for 3 minutes. Wonder if that can actually be played live accurately.. Really loved Oh Sheila. And 1999 was a lot simpler in comparison to the others (drums of course).

Whats the name of that sound in Prince 1999? Not the Kik or Snare....the other sound that doesn't really sound like any real drum. Its such a signature sound. I heard it on a Gary Numan record last week....maybe 'Telekon' or 'Dance' from early 80s.

I don't know how accurate some of this is, but they sound close enough. Some of those patterns like the infamous "777-9311" are quite hard to replicate. I guess it would be futile to ask for a MIDI file on all of these...? ;-)

What's the difference, between the; Electribe EMX-1 & ESX-1? Both have SD Storage. But, when it comes right down 2 the sampling, which one is better? I'm a musician myself. I sing, play drums (Acoustic & Electronic), and I'm teaching myself how 2 play the piano/keyboard. I'm heavily influenced by 80s artists; mainly Prince & Michael Jackson. I can actually play "When Doves Cry". When I buy the "Flip Video", I'll record myself playing the song, on a "Roland TD-9SX" drum kit, at a local Best Buy.
