Guys, it is admirable that you folks are contributing the storage and computational resources to a good cause. as someone who is doing data modelling professionally, storage is very crucial to keep the "processing data" - the final output data is much smaller. To put it in normal terms, the storage used here is in fact virtual memory. Processing power: CPU and GPU, is the next most important - number of cores is more important than single core clock speed. RAM is almost a non-concern as the processing data will almost always fill up within minutes. Moving TB's of data over the network is another factor to computation time. For some context, I'm using 300TB of storage and 40TB of ram, and some of my colleagues are having over 1PB of storage. Protein modelling is far larger than what i'm working on due to the permutations.

Something I've been thinking about is that one of the really positive things covid-19 has brought is now we're seeing people coming together with their own bits of CPU and GPU donations in the form community projects like this. We're also seeing the benefits of investing in computation to increase the speed at which medical research develops. It seems to be in its infancy, but I predict that by the end, we're going to see increased developments in internet speeds here in the US (google fiber being more common in the US), leaps in computational simulations for medical and other areas of research, and ways to get the community involved. What a time to be alive.

Though I doubt he has to do any specific number of videos with them or anything, just that he can’t just sell them or give them away (which would have been cooler imo after he was done with the video and kept the ones he actually wanted)

@radicalxedward80474 жыл бұрын
Abhishek Sharma You’re entitled to your view. But “he would better benefit from it than anyone else”? That makes no sense. How is throwing excessive amounts of storage at things that will never use it a better use than giving them out to hundreds of people who would all have real uses for them. Some for more noble causes kinda like this folding at home server, some who simply couldn’t afford it and would be grateful to have a reliable backup drive to not lose precious family photos they don’t have backed up or hundreds of other uses. Most of them are just sitting in a box. How is that better? I totally agree that youtubers that constantly give stuff away just for subs and are giving 1 thing away to millions of people which means it’s really just to manipulate them into subbing, is really annoying. But honestly giving back to a bunch of fans at no expense to himself due to a happy accident is not the same thing.

@Motgy instead of folding, they made a server where people connect with their clients to fold

It’s brilliant. There aren’t that many F@H backend servers from what I hear (I fold using Rosetta@home and soon the IBM WCG so I wouldn’t actually know) so it’s always a good idea to bring up some more of them.
