@camronconlee944
@camronconlee944 4 жыл бұрын
thaitichi 1. You should flow nitrogen inside the piping while brazing in order to prevent oxidation on the inside of the pipe which can lead to problems later. 2. Could have swaged the copper lines to reduce the number of brazes and in turn make fewer potential leak joints. 3. Pulling vacuum through a manifold is potentially the slowest and least efficient way of pulling a vacuum. 4. I didn’t see a micron gauge being used so I will assume that he didn’t. A quality micron gauge is the only way to ensure that proper evacuation has been achieved. 5. Maybe it’s not available in his area; however, they sell preinsulated linesets rather than running copper and insulating it. 6. The flare fittings on the cassettes are technically supposed to be torqued to a specific torque spec. They sell torque wrenches specifically made for this. 7. An ac tech would have opened the service valves prior to turning the system on. 8. Those units are meant to be suspended by threaded rod so that you can adjust the height of the unit if necessary to take up any gaps between the face and the drywall on the ceiling. All in all the job was done and the units were operational. Not knocking them at all, I just know how a professional would feel if watching an amateur like me trying to build a computer for the first time.

Installing airconditioning (1 outside unit, 1 condenser in living room and 1 condenser in master bedroom) is next on my list :D Luckily I won't have to actually go through ceilings and attics and shit though.

Also you can't just walk into a wholesaler and get refrigerant without being certified with the proper training to handle it. Where I am no one will even sell to you unless you're certified. when the electrician started talking about brazing joints, i was curious what was going on, then i saw that he was extending the lines but then i noticed something very interesting, he brazed those joints without flowing nitrogen through the lineset. That may cause carbon buildup in the lineset and the refrigerant acts like a detergent which washes away the carbon on to the txv causing it to get clogged up which will create issues in the future.

Love you guys videos and as a professional refrigeration engineer really enjoyed seeing you working with ac (loved the A/C cooled pc video too). You guys did a great job considering you had never done it before. I know guys that do it for a living that wouldve struggled 😅. Just fyi: the insulated drainage cuffs are for attaching to 22mm poly pipe usually. There’s normally a rubber reducer with the cassettes which are used instead when connecting to flexible tubes and hoses etc. The the bag of fittings that you found and had no idea what purpose they served were the drainage kit for the condensing unit. If you run the unit in heating mode condensate forms on the condenser coil rather than at the evaporator. Those fittings mean you can run that condensate away if you need to rather than it dripping on the floor. The cassette template is mainly for showing where the fixing brackets are and the dimensions of the cassette itself. This is so you can get all the fixings etc prepared and correct so the cassette only has to lifted into position once. However Some will state the minimum size of the hole required to accommodate the cassette around the outer edges. But yeah great job guys!

Well, it’s also a heat pump, so eventually the reduction in heating costs compared to most peoples old gas furnace or fuel-oil boiler will pay the system costs off. If my guess is correct, he’s under $6k into this system, and it’ll save him probably in the range of $400-700 a year in heating costs. It will last longer than 15 years if it’s a good brand and was installed correctly, so there you have it. The AC that pays for itself by heating more efficiently than the world’s best furnace.

@@QuantumS1ngularity it appears that he bought the cheapest units he could find online. There's a good chance that they aren't even legal in Canada. (we have extremely strict laws. For better or worse.) A big brand name would have been far more expensive. In this case it matters, the big brands just have better units with better warranties. Working in an attic in the middle of the summer really sucks, although they should have used fans to ventilate better. It still sucks, and you pay more just because of that. Labour here is very expensive and attic access slow things down a lot. Installing these here are still a bit of a niche, unfortunately. That also increases the price. They know that the alternative is to install ductwork which is even more expensive. All in all, the quotes were probably a few grand more than I would have charged. Depending on the brand, it probably would have been in the 10-15k range. There were also a number of mistakes in the installation, but it saved him money, so he can spend it later. 🤷‍♂️

@@SuperS05 IDK if big brands = better units, that is not always the case in so many other cases besides AC. There are a lot of starting business with quality control that may surpass the "we always did that way" kind of guys.... Unfortunately you will pay for the name of the company in your unit... Warranties can be the same... What could be a problem is some maintenance inside the unit can get a little tricky because there's fewer technicians available, but with those prices you can buy a new one and still be a lot under the quoted value. And it's my understanding that people will price gouge when they can... Oh the owner spending 15k on the units, lets make a 50/50 distribution with the labor... So...30k? I'd focus on the quality of materials of the units, if it's comparable with other brands, I'd be interested in using them for less than a half of the cost.

@@macvirii I'm only talking about vrf/mini splits. In this case brands do make a difference. Mitsubishi being top of the game. Fujitsu is right on their tails. Daikin is targeting the mid range with less features but still a decent unit. I've installed Amazon specials before. It's generally a Chinese knock off with poor installation and/or serviceability design choices. They are completely disposable, usually with no parts available, and the warranties aren't worth the paper they are printed on. This is still an emerging sub-field where innovation is still a big factor.

@@SuperS05 I agree, some knock offs are pure garbage. I don't have any experience with the Senville units that Linus installed, but they seem to be reasonable in quality and price... Also the company is Canadian, so good for Linus I guess. I just browsed their site and it has even parts to buy directly... It may not be top of the line (only 21.5 seer rating), but it's not chinese clones of really poor quality.

@@QuantumS1ngularity we have radically different regulations then other parts of the world. BC and Ontario laws are some of the strictest out there. You pay for that, even if it's not a line item on the sheet. You can't just convert currencies. $6k would have been a low ball even as a side job and a general labourer helper. I would expect a residential company to charge at least $10k for this. Commercial companies would be +$15k. Add an extra few $k for a brand name unit. The +$20k quotes tells me that they were out of their comfort zone and didn't really want the job, or they were higher end Mitsubishi /fujitsu models, at a more expensive company. (higher wages attracts the better talent. It's very unlikely to find people like Brian at any lower wage level. That's even with the fact that he's still an apprentice, or Jr mechanic.)

Probably followed what they did on the outside lines on part 1. There it kinda made sense to cut the insulation a bit, so the pipes don't slide on the wall, but I'd still tied most of it down with insulation. In the attic there's no force moving them, perfectly fine to just loosely loop over the insulation to keep them in place, would have saved so much puddy.

Hope the refrigerant lines were purged with nitrogen while braising, all that black carbon that you see build up on the outside will also be inside your line sets. If you ever need it serviced feel free to give me a shout!

This seems like such an obvious addition for someone who’s so into liquid cooling PCs with refrigerant. I guess it wouldn’t really be practical for Linus’s personal use, but just having a chilled radiator that he can use to pass water cooling through would be a really cool proof of concept.
