@Gandagorn
@Gandagorn 4 жыл бұрын
Technically, Linux is allowed to be sold commercially but yes, it is scummy to sell free software for that much especially when you're selling a product that uses another companies product. If I were setting up linux, I would charge for the service and not the OS. Also, they are taking advantage of the elderly who don't know anything about computers. Paying 40+ dollars for a product that their grandson could set up for free is scummy
@TheDotBot
@TheDotBot 4 жыл бұрын
@@Gandagorn Free software means free to distribute, it does not mean you have to give your work away for free. The GNU public licence essentially states what's ok and what isn't. "You are allowed to *sell copies of the modified program commercially,* but only under the terms of the GNU GPL. Thus, for instance, you must make the source code available to the users of the program as described in the GPL, and they must be allowed to redistribute and modify it as described in the GPL." Btw, Linux is the OS. The architecture is 32/64-bit Intel, Arm, etc.

My grandparents actually considered getting one of these and I showed them just exactly how easy it is by pulling out one of my identical SanDisk 64GB sticks and dropping Xubuntu on it. I can appreciate whatever mild scripting they did and setup that they included (which most distros already have anyways), but the absolutely extreme markup they do for nothing but their own Linux distro and a cheap flash drive is insane and absolutely predatory. I also feel that this is basically an ethical violation of what Linux was built on to just charge for completely non-transformative versions of Linux

Pentium D would be socket 775 with DDR2, but yeah I was thinking the same thing, you could go buy another stick or two make it 8gb for like $10 and put a core 2 duo in for like $3 or a quad for like $9. SSDs are nothing now like $20 brand new, I mean sure you're going to be limited by SATA II, but in a use case like this where the computer is newer than 06' there's an upgrade path that would be dirt cheap and fine for normal grandma use cases, especially if you're going to have to help anyway, at least you can do the labor so she can keep using the same software she's used to, hypothetically speaking. There was an older lady I used to work with who had an all in one with an AMD E2 that she bought I put her together something like what I just stated above and she loves it. I've been giving grans elementary OS lately, and they absolutely love it. I charge $69 for in-home backup/restore, install and training, and my customers have been super happy about it. elementary OS is so clean and user friendly, and super low on resource usage. They feel like they've got a brand new pc. The difference is that I'm with them through the entire process, and I'm only a phone call away if they have any issues. You don't get that with this extra-pc garbage. Great review though.

I suppose Linus' argument was that an older person or someone not tech savvy wouldn't know how to go through the process of making one, or setting up a linux distro. Or just not have the time to do so. But considering I just bought a 64Gb usb for £11 [$15] and this 'product' is likely a preconfigured linux distro with preinstalled apps that you can get and do for free, you can imagine how much they're making in profit. There's also that this is quite literally a scam. The way it's advertised is to make the hardware run better, not install a new, less taxing operating system. Besides, if you bought this for gaming - unless you know how to use wine and the like, you're games are going to run equally slow, or slower anyways. A scam is selling a product that is advertised as doing something it doesnt do and quite simply, this exorbitantly priced product does not do as advertised - improve the performance of your hardware. It simply reduces the load on that hardware a bit.

Yup Mint really is the only distro I can install on non-linux people's machines and they immediately know how to use it. Mom's been running mint for quite a while and since I showed her Google Docs she hasn't asked another question. Mint is also way faster than windows obviously. She even set the printer up herself, it's legitimately easier than on windows if you have a typical HP/Epson/Canon/Samsung Inkjet printer. I installed TeamViewer just to be safe but I haven't needed to help her once.

My 93-year old grandma was using ubuntu and late mint 10 years ago as well. I once transferred my mother to Ubuntu (but she just didn't use that computer - she uses my dad's office PC and her tablet), and I've transferred my girlfriend to Mint and Ubuntu as well. Even the printer worked with the standard configurator. I taught her to apt install and she managed to install one or two things, I believe. If you can google, you can use Linux. If you can't google, everything that comes preinstalled will most likely be enough for your computing needs.
