For Jake's double clicking issue, you can change the double clicking speed on both Windows and OSX. The person probably tweaked it accidentally at some point and made it way too generous. this is why it's only an issue "sometimes" and why it'd happen for multiple mice.

The windows setting cant be it because they said double clicking, which means they meant to do one click and the computer registered it as two. For the windows option to matter they'd have to click twice, which i dont think is the case That being said, i am certain this is a windows issue, because it happens to every mouse they tried. 100% windows issue. Ugh it’s been 2-3 years but I got into Dev ops/web ops. So web building, and some uncommon softwares. Jr full stack. I’d rather live in a box under the bridge vs work in an IT call center again. Towards the end of my career, I got lazy with it and just started automatically reinstalling windows and company software . I got fired over it, but hindsight it was way quicker than explaining what a hamburger is, and windows various cmd tests to people twice my age, and made my diagnosing 100x easier. What lead to my termination was a few NPC’s who were upper heads in the company got mad they didn’t back up their files. Which was lost on a windows wipe because I know how to write over partitions. We used cheap laptops that were plagued with memory issues company wide. The company also didn’t have a cloud. I now work for a real tech company, along with being independent. The quality of life of even regular employees understanding the cloud. It’s like my piece of heaven on earth.

@@P0TAT069 take my advice for what it’s worth. Change your major. Learn languages, or engineering if you want to be in tech. IT is truly a dumb persons career path, and it’s oversold as a good career. The reality is you’ll make under 50k and in a call center environment. I can openly talk the most sht about it because I worked it, which doesn’t make me a hypocrite. It’s a sad life. I work in automation now, and my stint in IT only fueled my rage of why people need automated out of jobs. At this rate I can’t tell people to go into skilled labor anymore because one of my first projects was helping program a machine that welded. So kicking rocks and digging holes will have a lot of competition. My first education was in metallurgy, CNC. So halfwayengineer I guess. IT was my foot in the door in tech. My initial goal was to program cnc equipment, but I’m missing the engineer side. So I settled with software and to be fair, doesn’t pay much less. The sacrifice in time, doesn’t meet the supposed demand. You can make up for that shortage simply through investing. I’m on the downhill to 30, but if you take the engineer route. Doors will fall in your lap open, and if you play your cards right. Don’t chase delusional wealth. You could retire easily before 30. There’s very little passive income to be made in IT, devops/engineering. You made it you own it, through pay, stock options, entrepreneurship etc.

Had a similar experience as a level 1 & 2 service desker. Call average was meant to be 7mins. We normally beat that without too much effort (corporate pc image - easy to remote assistance into). However, i once had a guy call from beijing that barely spoke english. Call took 45mins, but it was resolved. That messed up my call stats for the day, but the dude sent the most glowing feedback ever (in google translated english i believe). Absolutely... I recently helped a m8 with a loptop gfx overheating issue recently... it looked clean through the fan hole, and through the back through the fins, but when I took the bottom off the laptop, there was a fine matt across the inside edge of the fins that just couldnt be seen without removing the bottom of the laptop... In the end, that wasn't the full issue and I actually removed the heatsink/cooler, re-pasted and fit new thermal pads which resolved the issue, and finally because I'm a pedant, I installed MSI afterburner and undervolted the GFx chip a bit which finished the job with a laptop cooler, quieter, and faster than it had ever been (I also tried to undervolt his CPU but despite my best efforts, I couldn't find the key combo to enable the advanced/debug menu in BIOS)

There is a good reason why there are no good general tech servicedesks you can call unless your willing to pay a lot of money. Tech is huge and highly complex and everyone who will call you will have a completely unique situation. That is why if you call your ISP they are not going to help you fix your windows problems. They can't, their staff knows their product (hopefully) and knows the most commonly asked questions. It is also why you, like most businesses, try to standardize their IT infrastructure as much as possible. Your editing workstations are similar because it makes troubleshooting key business hardware easier. It is also why big companies will have different admins for different parts of their tech infrastructure. It is also why most nerds don't like being their families servicedesk. Each problem will be unique with unique hardware in an unique location with people using it having different expectations. It's really difficult and often very time consuming.

That mouse double click issue I've ran into. It was actually caused by Nvidia physX drivers. I wiped the OS multiple times. Swapped the motherboard, PSU, CPU, ram, and eventually tossed in an old GTX 750 which didn't support PhysX. I'd bet money that Linus' suggestion of USB 2.0 fixes it. I've had a lot of audio interfaces over the years and have encountered that issue multiple times, and it's almost always because it was plugged into a USB3 port. Even with interfaces that claim to support USB3, they often just prefer 2.0; it has less chance for potential issues and audio interfaces just don't need it. Audio interfaces are also notorious for shitty drivers which just exacerbates the issue. I bet that new driver MOTU told the guy they were pushing out was attempting to solve a USB3 issue. Even high-end RME interfaces specifically state that 2.0 is more than enough.

People are always surprised at how calm and patient I am when I'm dealing with a frustrating issue, and when I explain where my career started, it all makes sense. It took me 3 hours once, just to get this old gal into a remote session, and it was excruciating, because she wanted to read every malware pop-up that showed up on her screen, and I had to herd her like a cat into doing what I needed her to do. The main issue was that the company I worked for sold a McAfee product that wasn't pre-installed on the system, and it came with a trial of a different McAfee product instead. That 30 day trial would expire, hold their system hostage and they indignantly refused to believe it because they paid for McAfee for life or at least a couple years. As the Senior SysAdmin for my company running our Internal Helpdesk and managing the environment that our MSP department uses day-to-day, this was great entertainment! I fully support making these videos a recurring series. My favorite part (even though it ground my gears a bit) was Jake talking about Port Forwarding even though what he was describing was PAT (Port Address Translation) not Port Forwarding (that's maintaining the same port number but routing packets between subnets which is NAT - Network Address Translation). Buuuut, this was a rare moment and video for me where I reacted out loud and enjoyed true entertainment.
@quiz1kt150
@quiz1kt150 Жыл бұрын
What Jake was describing is actually Port Forwarding. PAT provides internal clients a port so they can all use the same public IP address issued to the router (to access the internet). Port Forwarding...... forwards an external port to an internal IP:port (and yes you can redirect an external port to a different internal port) NAT literally translates IP addresses from one to another, and PAT works by assigning a port to each client so they can access the internet at the same time because the router will know which internal IP:port to send traffic to with the goal of minimizing the amount of public IPs required

It's funny how help desk / call center people get paid the least in the IT world, but are usually the most stressed out people. You can definitely tell the difference between a place that pays by volume of calls vs. one that pays their people an hourly wage and doesn't care about hugs numbers. Everyone has to start somewhere in IT, but the best places to work are those that aren't huge, offer training and classes, and promote/hire from within first.

So the only viable option was throttlestop, also later on I got one of those trays with a fan that you put your laptop on top of, and that did a good job at keeping it cool, I didn't need to use the program as much. For the audio problems, I actually just ran into a couple myself that I was able to fix. The first being that some of my USB ports were going to sleep after X amount of time inactive and rebooting the device woke them up (until I switch the power state settings on them). The second issue that might help Fredrick with the MOTU issue was that my PC found a generic manufacturers audio driver and installed it during "plug-n-play" but when I updated the driver it didn't overwrite the generic driver. Pro tip for getting a laptop to run cooler: If you search "choose a power plan" to bring up the power options menu, set your plan to balanced; and if it's still running too hot, in that came menu click "change plan settings", then "change advanced power settings", find "processor power management" and click its drop down menu. There will be two things to check. Go into "maximum processor state" and lower it. Mine is set to 75% when on battery and 80% when plugged in. It will slow down your laptop a little, but for most things you don't need it running full tilt. When you go to play games just change the power plan back to high performance. Also make sure "system cooling policy" is set to active when plugged in. and maybe while on battery if you still need it.

Although in this case it's probably product specific, a lot of the time, it can also be audio drivers for the motherboard's integrated audio. Uninstalling them and disabling integrated audio can resolve such issue. Seen it happen with and actually had it happen with Creative soundcards, though to be frank Creative drivers are flaky AF and can crash for a wide variety of reasons. The best advice there is to not buy Creative sound devices.

My guess on that double clicking mouse issue, although with limited information, I bet the Windows Explorer was configured to use single click to open items. "Folder Options" Radial switch selected to: "Single-click to open an item (point to select). This would explain why sometimes it "Double Clicks" when accessing an item in file explorer and "Single Clicks" when inside an application or surfing the web.

I think you guys missed a timestamp at around 4:50. Jake finishes his conversation with CONNOR and starts to answer Juanma's question about port forwarding. This was a great video as it shows the kind of creative thinking you need when picking up calls all day. I work at an operation center at an airport and sometimes you need to consider every option, even the ones that aren't obvious.

for the iphone bootloop, this can be solved via a hard reset at an apple store (we’ve special programs for that) or the logic board’s broken. we always try the reset first so we know if we can exclude software from the image

That idea at the end of the video of a paid Tech Tip line is actually kinda baller. Definitely something I would consider using if I came into an issue I couldn't solve, which would be rare, but no one is infallible.

agreed. Could have used that for an issue that caused me problems for 2 months and Jake just casually dropped a throwaway line about fixing it like it was no big deal in this video. Had I not resolved the problem, I wouldn't have picked up on it. Worth paying IMO.

A good thing to check for the double mouse click is if they are using a laptop or desktop, sometimes laptops have a stuck trackpad button and when users have the laptop docked and use an external mouse, they think it’s the external mouse thats the issue. Also ive seen webcam covers that are thick enough to press the left/right click causing some erratic behaviour

So for Connors issue, if you navigate to file explorer then folder options and then general tab/click items as follows, I suspect he had it set to single-click to open an item. It gives the illusion of the computer double clicking but it's really not. It's a terrible mode to run in, the rare time I've run into someone who had it turned on they were always accidentally dragging and dropping files and folders into other files and folders and "losing stuff".

@@leandrrob until they fully diagnose the problem by having the hardware in front of them there is only so much you can do even if the customer is knowledgeable about pc's. in this case it sounded like a corrupted windows installation more than anything. best solution to most of these problems is doing a fresh install of windows on the hardware and if the problem still persists its a hardware problem. so the advice that was given may not necessarily be the best solution nor the easiest, but it is one of the best ways of figuring out the problem. it could have also been as easy as the user turned on something they shouldn't have in the bios or other windows settings. my recommendation for anyone on a pc who uses it constantly: stop running overclocks as that leads to instability often times, don't blindly follow videos online on how to improve performance on your pc as sometimes what they have you do in those videos break the stability of your software, and regularly clean up your cache files and other temp files from the pc. these 3 things if followed will have your pc lasting a lot longer and running way more stable. the best solution and fastest way to find a problem with hardware is running that hardware on a clean and fresh install of the OS and drivers. unfortunately that part typically can last up to several hours in trying to fix it tho if you are not experienced in swapping hardware. like linus suggested tho if you have a spare ssd or hdd sitting around you can use that for an even faster way to check if its drivers and software or the hardware.
