Glad to see Solus returning to life, same with Budgie under the Fedora Spin umbrella. I may be a little biased about openSuSE and KDE with its Plasma desktop and software suite of which all three parts are amazing but both Solus and Budgie deserve much more love. Back when I had it running on a secondary PC for LAN parties, it was really nice to use.

lol funny & agreed... my two machines are openSUSE KDE for work and Solus Budgie on my laptop... i hardly remember distro-hopping i've been pleased with the combo for so long

One more thing worth mentioning about Ubuntu 23.04 is that it now fully supports the Steam Deck hardware. For some games it's still advisable to have Steam OS, because AMD haven't released their proprietary graphics drivers for Ubuntu 23.04 yet (and the installer for 22.04, which worked for 22.10 with a workaround, cannot be used any more). But even with the open source graphics drivers almost all games run smoothly. I haven't figured out yet how to switch off the backlight of the built in display when using an external one, but I'm sure that's just a matter of time. As good as Steam OS is, some things simply don't work (VmWare) or require some fiddling (Java JRE) and I'm happy to have my familiar environment as a second boot option now.

I have noticed that when most DLN channels of which TWIL is but one of many, the "Show notes" refer to their web sight, not the liner notes/descriptions of podcasts, videos, and what not on their various platforms. They are getting better at adding those too, which is a lot more work though, so kudos to them when they do.

13:34 You could always run Dolphin as root on openSUSE, since the moment Dolphin first appeared. I know that was a distro specific work around, but there has always at least been an option available, and it also raises the question, why other distros didn't just follow suit more than a decade ago? Either way, it's good KDE finally came to their senses.

I don't want anything to do wtih anything named after a damn snake.. I HATE snakes-- even anything named similar to them...... so I will NOT be using this.. Silly I know-- but Oh well- that's me- and there are plenty of distros I DO like. I DID love Solus though... too bad.

A bit of Snap lip service?..... Steam and Firefox work well - Steam much better than Flatpak version imho. The others, such as they are... not so much. Limited choices. Old versions. Still slow. Several dead icons. Fedora? Huh? Internet access off and on constantly. Dnfdragora remains garbage. Buggy. The usual Fedora.

Daaaaaaaaaaang!!! I can finally use Dolphin in Su mode directly!🥳 Thanks for making my day Michael!! Here have some rewards: 🐧🏆🐧🏅🐧🎖🐧🐧 I have been doing it using a workaround to launch it via the terminal (in Arch): sudo pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY KDE_SESSION_VERSION=5 KDE_FULL_SESSION=true dbus-launch dolphin It worked, but you didn't get your layout, theme, UI or Dolphin settings applied to that instance of Dolphin. I haven't discovered this change yet, but am definitely going to look into it. Not that it even should be needed often, but man when you do need it, it's likely a more desperate troubleshooting situation where you really need it, and if you are on the terminal illiterate side, it can take exponentially longer with all of the looking up commands cross referencing... and you have more chances of borking your system in the terminal than in a file manager given pop up warnings and confirmations... It's those and other reasons I (and many others) thought KDE's decision to just disallow elevated privileges completely in Dolphin was a bad one, and not safer, but more unsafe. I guess there is a difference between "Safe from intruders and malware" vs "Saving uninformed users from themselves", where the disconnect lies, and mostly where to draw a line in between the two, which subjectively can vary widely for every individual user, and there's no one size fits all solution. 😵‍💫
