The downside to a channel like this, is that it makes me want to buy (even) more hardware to test stuff on.

I actually just picked this up but the base model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. I'm running Bluefin Linux. Works right out of the box.

How to install Ubuntu in surface go?
@catharsis76297 ай бұрын
for video playback, it was struggling probably due to decoding on the cpu. Consult the archwiki to see how to fix it. Also I don't think vaapi decoding even works with the snap version of firefox.
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming7 ай бұрын
Thanks. According to the Firefox about:support page hardware-decoding is enabled. I had the experience so far that with AMD GPU's I had to force enable it in the about:config page and with Intel iGPU systems it was enabled by default.

Every time I read about issues with applications it seems to related to snaps. What exactly is even the benefit of them

Hi there! I am currently looking to buy a surface go (1st gen or maybe 2nd gen, have not decided yet) to use for coding (I am starting to learn coding and looking for backend blockchain development) and need to use it when outside the home (i have a pretty decent pc at home) was wondering if using linux would be better for this purpose compared to windows and if so, which one should i install? Thanks a lot
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming6 ай бұрын
Hi, Regarding the Surface Go, if you don't need Windows specific software or the cameras, then I would definitely install Linux, because it's a lot smoother and more usable. Additionally, you can gain experience with Linux and more experience is always a good thing. Regarding the software development side, most software developers prefer Linux (including me). However, I would say try both and form your own opinion. Visual Studio on Windows can be a really good IDE, but I personally prefer VS Code + the terminal on Linux. Even if you don't finish your project, you'll at least learn what it's like to develop on Windows and on Linux, and this experience can help you in your future projects.

@@LowBudgetLinuxGaming I have a pretty decent PC for my other software needs. I am trying to: 1. Gain experience with Linux 2. Have a device to use when I'm outside (I have decided to go out and when I'm at a cafe or etc, I want to have a device so I can code with) 3. Media consumption 4. Use as moonlight client so I can play games, use my PC softwares, etc when I don't want to sit behind my desk What kind of battery life can I expect from these three types of use (1. Generally using device outside home to code with 2. Media consumption 3. Streaming from PC on local network with sunshine and moonlight) Thanks a lot
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming5 ай бұрын
Battery life is very poor to be honest. Depending on the workload you are looking between 2 and 4 hours.

Hi there, if you haven't decided yet, I strongly recommend the surface go 2 with the M3, as it's much better than the first generation in all aspects, screen, Battery (still not great), Performance ( twice the power in synthetic benchmarks, still weak tho)

underrated af. keep it up, this video was really helpful as i own a surface go and windows 11 is horrible ❤❤❤❤❤
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming7 ай бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate that! Keep in mind that not every Surface Go generation works so well out of the box with Linux. Luckily, you can start a live session of a distro of your choice from USB and see how well it works before installing it.

@@LowBudgetLinuxGaming yup, i've tried several distros in live mode and mx linux on kde works the best, gonna install it soon or whenever windows 11 24h2 comes out. i'm gonna have to install the surface kernel cause having secure boot off triggers me. i might try fedora kde since it doesnt need secure boot disabled
@fabricio4794Ай бұрын
You should install XFCE linux Mint on it

I tried that and it worked well but touchscreen didn't work.

The camera, wifi, face recognition is still work on it? I wanna try to instal Ubuntu 20.04 on my surface go 1
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming4 ай бұрын
The answers are in the video 😅 The cameras don't work, everything else does. There is a Surface Kernel in which the cameras work. As far as I know, the IR sensor unfortunately doesn't work under Linux.
@minhngoc74806 ай бұрын
is this ubuntu 22.04? and will pen work on linux?
@LowBudgetLinuxGaming6 ай бұрын
It's Ubunt 24.04 like I already said in the video. The pen works fine as a pen, but the additional buttons have no functionality.

I love Linux. I install it on every device I possibly can. I've gotten my friends to switch to it. I use Arch as often as possible, even on devices that don't benefit from it. I contribute the odd block of code. However, there is a hell of Linux no one speaks of. A hell SO DEVILISH that those deep in the mines of the beloved penguin's OS keep it secret as to not dredge up the horrid memories of such a scarring experience. That experience I speak of is installing and using Linux on a Microsoft device. Microsoft has done everything in their power to make you bleed to simply get the ISO booting and you must sacrifice your first born to Bill Gates to do anything beyond that so that your device may actually work right with it. God save the souls of the Surface Linux users.

I think it could run on the Surface Go technically, but as far I know League of Legends got a new anti cheat which does not work with Linux.

Most probably firefox didn't use proper hardware acceleration (Video decoding) you should have given chrome a try and 4K videos there Good video 👍

chrome also does not have vaapi support out of the box.
