15:20 This is because Cinnamon is missing 2 Wayland standards: - xdg-decorations - cursor-shapes* *cursor-shapes do also need to be implemented on the application's side, so this is not a definitive "no Cinnamon doesn't support cursor-shapes" case. If Cinnamon did support xdg-decorations, native decorations would be possible, but because it doesn't programs are forced to make their own decorations instead. As for cursor-shapes: They are a relatively new standard to tell the compositor which cursor, based on identifiers, to render in the moment.

HWE kernels and Pipewire are really nice to see. HWE is going to go a long way in improving the first time experience of new users. Pipewire is going to be required for video related purposes on Wayland anyways, so they might as well switch over audio to it.

Very good distribution, I have just been trying Mint for the first time in my live in both virtual machines and installed bare metal next to my other operating systems on this laptop. I love both the ease of use as well as the maintainers their mindset to replace everything from Ubuntu that you shouldn't wish on a desktop. Wayland experience is still extremely buggy. On dedicated NVIDIA graphics I just get a black screen with it. When running on running on the builtin AMD graphics it's still super glitchy with all kinds of flashing things, and fractional scaling is possible to enable but results in so many glitches that it gets unusable. No problem. It's really a work in progress, very much Alpha version state I would describe it. X11 experience is fantastic. Just use that, it's fine for now. Good to notice however that fractional scaling is still based on xrandr resolution rescale combined with GTK integer upscale, which makes graphics slower and certain things blurry. Basically a hack and not a true solution. I figured this out because it matters for me. But this issue is one of those very difficult to overcome limitations of GTK desktops compared to KDE Plasma and Qt.

I recently got my Beelink SER4 4800U Mini PC back up and running. Two years after having used Windows 11 on my system, the OS finally succumbed to a permanent BSOD with every reboot and all subsequent reinstalls have completely stopped detecting the built-in Wi-Fi. I’ve ultimately given up on Windows 11 and switched to Linux Mint, which detected the Wi-Fi right out of the box. Fortunately, I’ve used Linux Mint before. For my Linux Mint setup, I’ve created and mounted the / and /efi partitions on my primary 1TB NVMe SSD, and the /home partition on my secondary 2TB SATA 2.5” SSD.

I just moved from Windows to Fedora Workstation as a Developer. Mint is a better choice for users who want a Linux OS with an environment similar to Windows OS. Fedora also has KDE Plasma which is built for users at the beginner level. Ubuntu is a clean and modern Linux distro that has a lot potential software on it. But later Ubuntu users complained about Snap Packages. There are many many of distro which built for specific cases such as Kali, Parrot, Centos, RedHat, etc. The usage of Linux requires a lot of challenges depending on distro you are using.

Linux Mint is based on ubuntu LTS, meaning that towards the middle/end of linux mint 22 the same problem will come up. To remedy this, they provide an "Edge" version that ships with a newer kernel.

How is gtk 4 better than gtk 3 in case of apps ? Mint team said they added support for gtk4 theme..so you can still use gtk 4 apps...not just the native ones
@linuxnext2 ай бұрын
Because gtk4 toolkit offers more functionality then gtk3, it's not just about the theme that gets supported, if you look at the native apps in gtk4 form they will have better features and more functionality under the hood, probably better performance also possibly

I tried Wayland the moment it was available after the update. I am using an applet - Ulauncher - but it is disfunctional under wayland. with flatpaks becoming so popular, who needs up to date packages from distro's repo anyway? I don't use mint personally, have tried it and preferred something more, but it's something I actively recommend to people who are fed up with windows and/or afraid to migrate to windows
@linuxnext2 ай бұрын
yeah true, its just users dont know that flatpak has its own packages so if they get recommended to install .deb steam, then they will use the system packages, then they may have issues if they are using a amd gpu, should be fine for now as its mesa 24.0

The king? I don’t think so. Ubuntu MATE is, as far as I’m concerned. Mint, even 22, which I am currently trialing, is way too laggy & stuttery. Which I assume is in part due to how less mature the code base for the Cinnamon Desktop is.
@@MacDKB hmm yeah intel xe is not in the best shape ngl on linux in my opinion When kernel 6.12 and mesa 24.3 release this will improve with xe driver enabled by default and intels ANV XE improvements with vulkan in mesa On my older intel hardware from 2015 there is no problems because i915 has matured with the hardware im using but for you thats a different story If i owned a xe laptop or a intel ARC gpu i wouldnt be running a LTS distro on it until 4 years from now since mint doesn't update fast, instead i would just choose archinstall and enable the xe driver, install mesa git for newest patches from intels team to get the best out of it until kernel 6.12 and mesa 24.3
@MacDKBАй бұрын
@@linuxnext Oh, yeah, that's right. I remember hearing somewhere about the Xe-related issues, which will cause problems for a GPU-accelerated desktop like Cinnamon. I'm already running Oibaff's nightly drivers, which include MESA 24.3. And, I'm also running 6.11 RC6 of the kernel. So I just have to sit tight & wait for a useable kernel from the 6,12 series to try (I don't mind running a test kernel). I'm really curious to see what the performance improvements will look like...
