Linux Mint and MX Linux are two of the hottest, two of the most popular Linux distributions today. They both have created their own, solid userbases of millions of people because of the things they offer.
MX Linux is a hyer powerful, performance driven system with one of the best toolings in an operating system I’ve seen yet. Honestly, this is a very powerful linux distro. It lets you do things that are not even possible on most other distros.
Linux Mint on the other hand, is known for a super polished, premium user experience. The desktop environment, the looks, the way of doing things here has been highly coveted and it’s that Linux Mint experience that has created such a loyal fan following for mint.
Both Mint and MX are top dogs in the linux scene. That’s for sure. But if you have to pick one which one should you go for?
To answer this, I installed both Mint and MX on my system and started my deep research. I compared all the aspects of these two distros like the performance, the software availability, user interfaces, stability, usability and a lot more.
And in this video, I’m gonna put it all in front of you, and we’ll finally see which of these two is the best, which of these two is more suitable for you. Linux Mint or MX Linux.

Been using MX on all my production machines since 2017. One very important point missed in the video is that the MX KDE edition is one of their "AHS" releases (advanced hardware support) -- which means that it gets updated kernels, firmware, mesa, etc so that MX can usually support the latest hardware. I just got my Framework laptop Ryzen upgrade motherboard, and using MX Snapshot, easily moved my MX23 KDE install (with 6.5 kernel) to the newly upgraded machine and everything works without a hitch - fingerprint reader, suspend, new AMD wireless, 7000series APU....it's been rock solid. Great video though!

My son's computer has: Windows, Mint and MX. My computer: MX, CachyOS, and a 3rd partition for distro sampling. If I had to choose one though, I would pick MX Linux. The MX tools are unmatched, and I personally feel in love with the MX snapshot tool that allows you to build your own ISO with all of your preferred apps installed by default.

I currently use both MX and Mint. MX at work, and Mint at home. With Cinnamon desktop, Mint is much better than MX. Better software center, easier Nvidia driver installation, less bloated softwares, better WINE support are among the reasons why I choose Mint over MX. To be frank, with Mint Cinnamon, I don't need Windows 11. Fortunately, Proton supports game titles that I play regularly.

Installed legacy nvidia driver for GT8700m and no needed to worry for setings, MX tool did it for me. Another thing - managed to dual boot with X-lite 11. When all distributions make it a standard to use the musl libc, it will be a huge difference in performance and memory footprint. For now, one have to DIY his desktop setup when using the musl libc instead of glibc as there is no distro out there that does it better out of the box than what linux mint and MX Linux have provided. All the glibc based distro - way too slow in terms of performance. If we really want better performance, it must be started from the ground up, at the foundation level of the compiled binary other than making programs more efficient. We have so much hardware power but we forget to optimize the software.

I tried linux MX but then switched to Linux Mint Mate, which is IMO better looking and runs well on low-powered systems. It is a shame that there does not seem to be a quantitative, standardized way to compare the performance (reactiveness) of windows managers. I think it'd be good to have a benchmark suite, similar to the old Winbench 99, that simulates opening/closing windows, running programs etc and clocks the time taken. Running the benchmark on the same hardware would provide a way to compare in an objective way to compare system performance.

Personally, I wouldn't choose either of them. Linux Mint has basically become so stuck in the past to the point of missing out on many things most distros take for granted, like Wayland support (unless you use Nvidia GPUs, Wayland is 100% ready for use), better gaming support, and Mint 21.2 even uses an older kernel than Debian 12; not a good look for newer systems. Also, since Mint 19, I haven't used Mint because they dropped Plasma as one of their supported DEs with that release despite many in the community still wanting it back. Tuxedo OS or Feren OS are good picks for users that want KDE Plasma but want something similar to the former Linux Mint KDE flavor, while having newer kernel, feature, and hardware support.

@cameronbosch1213
@cameronbosch1213 10 ай бұрын
@motoryzen It's not meant to be everything XOrg is. It's meant to be a leaner codebase without X and its baggage. It's literally just Nvidia holding back Wayland now. If you have an AMD or Intel GPU, it works well. And you literally have XWayland for XOrg applications. Wayland also being leaner means less maintenance for things that the DE maintainers could implement such as one to one touchpad gestures. XOrg has become impossible to maintain; as we have seen, almost all former X maintainers are now working on Wayland. TL;DR: Wayland does 97% of what people need for desktop use. The 3% it doesn't do is baggage that XWayland can do, and really the only reason to not use Wayland nowadays is Nvidia GPUs.
@motoryzen

@cameronbosch1213 if one can't game with it, and Some Content creation Software doesn't work with it. When you're talking about the dime. A dozen masses of people... ... Then what else is there other than basic PC usage such as email and browsing the Web and KZbin and trash book? So no, wailyn is not 100% ready. It's not even 75% ready yet. And some mushy's wine to run certain windows programs in Linux. Whyland has not proven itself a 100% consistently working well yet in that scenario.
@cameronbosch1213
@cameronbosch1213 10 ай бұрын
@motoryzen But can XOrg even run displays at different refresh rates? No. Wayland can. Again, there's XWayland for those other cases Wayland isn't yet ready for. No wonder COSMIC and Budgie 11 will only support Wayland with XOrg support limited to XWayland. It works now, but it's not very maintainable for much longer.

Here is my input...... I've been using MX-Linux for probably 3 years now. I tried most of the Ubuntu, etc. flavors when I left Windows behind...then I found MX-Linux. Recently with my laptop setup as it is, w/two 1 TB Seagate 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD's, I've got MX-Linux on 1 HDD, and now I have LMDE on the other HDD.... I simply love MX-Linux and don't want to part with it, but I wanted something else for a new challenge. I tried many like Arch, Fedora, Mangaro, Kali, Zorin, and a few others..... but with my DELL Latitude E6540.... not all of those Distro's could even locate my WiFi card or a Wifi Dongle in the USB port....! They all found my Ethernet card but I don't run Ethernet...... I did not want to waste time installing Drivers for various components.....so I quit the installations and went looking for something else(another Distro). Linux LMDE showed up and out of all the other's I tried....w/out 1 flaw...! And I"m using the LVM fs...... Each 1 TB HDD has the full capacity of each Distro.... I run QGIS on MX-Linux and Mobile Atlas Creator on LMDE-Debian-12..... I make up MAPS for ATAK-CIV a Civilian product of ATAK for non-military Ops.... It struck me a bit funny to see this Video posted as I just started with LMDE about 2 months ago..... I'm beginning to Love it also.... the 2 together make an awesome pair....! =)

Yo prefiero MX Linux, pues tiene herramientas con las que he podido resolver cualquier problema de manera simple sin usar el terminal. Ademas MX Linux me da mucha libertad, amo esta distro, he probado muchas y hoy me quedo en MXLinux

I used the desktop VERTICALLY for a while-- and since the screen is WIDER than it is tall--- it DOES give you more realestate on the screen in visible area-- but it's AWKWARD and hard to get use to..

I like the virtual side bar Works better for reading and normal use in the net Most of he time I need top down real-estate and have a bit free on the sides Maybe I'm weird hahaha

As far as performance is concerned, you compared apples to oranges : You compared the speed of Linux Mint Cinnamon vs MX Linux XFCE. You should have done this : Linux Mint XFCE vs MX Linux XFCE. Then you would find that version of Linux Mint (XFCE) is actually faster than MX Linux XFCE.

MX XFCE seems heavy on RAM, I would go for MX KDE, this should be better than XFCE and Cinammon

Great video. But nobody ever gives the LMDE version of LM it's respect. The Debian base is much preferable to me. I use it on my secondary drive.

Can you install mx linux on Macbook 12 inches retina display 2015? Without sound/bluetooth/close lid issue?
@LiveLife378

No. Unless it's virtual os install within parallels. ARCH LINUX OS WOULD work best and you may need specific T9 drivers installed for it.

Mint is great for Linux beginners. I'm a more experienced user and I ran it for over a year. I'm currently running MX with KDE Plasma. There's a lot of good stuff, but some things aren't up to date, so I'm trying out both Manjaro and EndeavourOS, both XFCE, in Virtualbox. Really enjoying the AUR, but compiling can take a long time. Still, yay does that. 20 years ago I was using tar a lot, so it's nice to have package managers like apt, pacman/yay, etc.

Ha! I use neither XFCE, nor Cinnamon. I use Mate, on Mint, because I find it awsome and kind of a even between XFCE and Cinnamon.

I would have chosen Linux mint over MX Linux for the tools and usability aspect due to Linux mints ability to upgrade to newer versions without a complete reinstall of your system. This is my main reason for having previously lean towards rolling release distributions until Linux meant created a tool to upgrade systems without a reinstallation

fedora for me, because it is the middle ground between rolling and point release. Six month point release with easy upgrade without the need to reinstall everything. Mint was my first choice distro and I loved it, but fedora offer newer kernel and package faster and it is important for a few thing that I do on my PC, gaming for example.

I half to agree with you overall, but this wasnt quite in the debate previously mentioned xD Fedora seems to be a lot more performant than mint with window management even using the same DE. I want to like mint so much, but for some reason doesnt pair well with my system. Even upgrading kernels to match fedoras did no justice. @@Winaras79

Linux Mint for me. I don't know why but I just don't like MX and I don't have a reason. Perhaps it's the look and feel. It's not buggy or anything like that I just don't like it. That's why I love Linux you are never stuck in an ecosystem you don't enjoy.

When i first looked at MX i didn't like the screen. Mint was easier on the eyes so i went with that i even bought s load disk on eBay. It was the mate version. Later i loaded cinnamon and that was the last distribution. Years ago i tried Ubuntu but hated all the orange and dark screens.73
