In this video I run through some of the basics of working with disks and partitions on a Linux system. This should give newer users some insight to get them started with finding and understanding basic information as well as preforming some basic storage related tasks.

Would love your suggestion on automated backups. We use Veeam for our Windows machines, but we have not been able to get it to work reliably on our Red Hat machines. One of our consultants tried REAR and that kind of worked, I'm also looking into Nakivo. I would like a set it and forget it solid backup (local). I'm sure I could eventually develop scripts and use rsync, but would like a supported solution. I love the idea of scheduled image backups like I have at home on Windows using Acronis. Backup and Restore using Acronis is very easy. Would love your thoughts. Thank you.

I just found your channel since I'm running into some disk issues. I enjoyed this video and look forward to watching more of your videos and learning more. I'm having a problem mounting any drives on a Red Hat System version 8.6. I plugged in a USB on the system and could not see the drive with lsblk. I was able to see this USB drive on another system, but not this one. As another experiment, I took an SSD connected via a Sabrent docking station to a laptop running Pop!-OS and used GParted to delete everything on the SSD and add one new partition. I created a dir and then copied one file to the SSD. Afterward, I dismounted the SSD and moved to the Red Hat system. Again I could not see the drive with lsblk. I'm assuming something is blocking the mount process. Are there log files or areas I can review to see what is going on in the mount process or do you have other things I can check? Thank you.

You can try checking dmesg to see what happens when you connect/disconnect the device.

@@x80nix Thank you. I'll try both of these suggestions.

@@x80nix I tried both suggestions. I'm not seeing any errors when I use dmesg just after connecting. I've tried 3 different SSD and I can see the brand, the serial number, etc., but it doesn't show any sdb, sdc, etc. like I would expect. This is a Red Hat machine that had a lot of security applied to it, so I'm wondering if that is the problem. I briefly tried to connect a windows laptop via a network cable and transfer the files that way. I was surprised when I could only get 2 Mb/s. I probably have something set wrong since this was the first time I did this. We will do updates and patches this weekend and try again on Monday. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks.
