Thank you for this - I was just looking at some of your other tutorials and was wondering how you can get Linux without overwriting an existing OS. This helps alot.
@tutoriaLinux9 жыл бұрын
+Mike A Hey, most popular distributions will have an installer that can detect an existing Windows install on your hard disk, and work around that by installing a dual-boot environment which lets you choose the OS you boot into. Ubuntu and its debian-derivative brethren (e.g. Mint) are a safe choice for this kind of thing.
@lochinvar004656 жыл бұрын
I'm running Mint(dual boot). During install it allows you to run alongside of OR instead of windows(your choice) You can either leave windows on your drive and install linux alongside or delete windows and use the entire disc for linux. I chose to install linux on a second internal drive(on the IDE bus) and it works quite well.

@tutoriaLinux5 жыл бұрын
You don't need likes for me to see your question :-). Yes, this course is still being updated and it still applies. The basic topics and skills I cover here are 'evergreen' -- they haven't changed much in the last 15 years. Many haven't even changed much in the last 30. That's not to say that Linux is standing still -- it's not -- but just that I've tried to focus on the core concepts that you need to become truly skilled at this stuff. Once you've worked through this course you should be able to pick most of the flavor-of-the-month tools or skills in a few hours.

I'm an MIS major and had a career in software dev for nearly 10 years. I'm thinking about jumping back in and was using this as a refresher and it has been great so far. In regards to creating my Ubuntu VM I'm only able to select 32-bit OS's for the VM. After doing some research I'm finding pre-Windows 8/10 versions do not support the virtualization features necessary for the 64-bit VMs. Kind of sucks, but figured I would ask your expertise before just saying screw it and going lame 32-bit! Hi, first of all thanks a lot for making this series! While installing VirtualBox I got a message about my network being temporarily unavailable due to some drivers that must have been installing. I agreed to it and nothing seems to have gone wrong, but I have a couple questions about that. 1. Did I install something wrong, or install a more feature intensive version than I needed? 2. Will this have any repercussions with windows? 3. If I end up removing virtualbox, will the uninstall remove this, or do I need to worry about doing something further as far as removal of everything installed? Thanks for any help!
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
Nothing to worry about! Virtualbox installs some drivers that are used for virtual machine networking, so your Windows machine temporarily goes offline (usually just for a few seconds) while this is done. These drivers are automatically removed when you uninstall Virtualbox. I believe when you update Virtualbox to the newest version, you'll have to go through the same process again, but that's the only additional annoyance you'll face. No worries, you did everything right! Have fun with Linux!
@BlackSmokeDMax8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply. Always nice to receive confirmation on things like that. @tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
Sure! Any Debian-based distro will work seamlessly with the course. Other distributions can be made to work as well, if you don't mind small syntax/config-file-location changes and a bit of googling. I actually recommend turning whichever Linux distro you choose into your *main* Operating system (this means installing it alongside Windows, for most people). In terms of improving your learning speed, switching to using Linux as your everyday OS is like attaching a rocket booster to a bicycle.

+nidhi rastogi Basically, the machine you're on, which is trying to run your virtual machine (VM), is running out of memory (RAM). Everything is the same except most Linux distributions now use systemd as their init (and much more) system. That means 'service foo restart' is now 'systemctl restart foo', and many logs have been moved from /var/log/service.log to the journal (journalctl -u service). I also use netstat occasionally in the early videos, which has (mostly) been replaced by 'ss' but you'll still find it installed on a lot of production systems and probably will until the current generation of sysadmins retires :-D.

When installing the virtual hard drive part of the virtual machine, does the recommended 8GB of storage eat away at the RAM of my computer. If my mac only has 8GB of storage will this eventually take up all of that storage?
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
Those 8GB are for the virtual hard disk, so they'll take up room on your computer's hard drive (not memory/RAM). Memory (or RAM) is just the amount of fast, non-permanent storage that your computer can use to juggle applications that are open at the same time. Generally, you can get away with a bit less than 8GB of disk space when installing an Ubuntu virtual machine. If you really want to save space, you can try installing a server version of the OS, which doesn't come with a full desktop environment. However you'll want to be comfortable with a command-line environment before doing this.

Try using a 32-bit version of the Linux distribution you're trying to install.
@tylerterrell62868 жыл бұрын
You'll have to change some BIOS settings. Go into your BIOS and somewhere in possibly CPU settings, Security or Overclocking settings you'll see an option concerning virtualization. If it's disabled, turn it to enabled. For me, I run a PC Mate h170a motherboard so I had to turn VT-D on because my Virtualization option was enabled to begin with. Then retry the whole install of the linux machine and change "Ubuntu 32bit" to "Ubuntu 64bit", as it should appear for you now. Then go ahead and run everything else the same way. If you have no idea what any of that means then go try a 32-bit version of Linux.

This person has felt the pain of breaking Linux by tinkering too much with it :-D. FWIW, if you don't learn/tinker much with it, Linux is perfectly stable as your main OS directly on the hardware. But if you want to mess around, try things, install lots of things, a VM isn't a bad idea as a kind of "training wheels" approach. On the other hand you won't be as motivated to fix it if it breaks :-D. I can see the virtue in both approaches.

@@tutoriaLinux VM from windows 11 is a good sandbox? you could say? if something bad happens worst case scenario you delete the VM, is my understanding. I consider myself a beginner. I have some electrical engineering knowledge and beginner computer knowledge.

Do I need to do this to "take the course" if I already have Linux Mint 18.3 installed on my machine?
@PeterKirwan6 жыл бұрын
Anyone have any thoughts on Hyper-V vs VMWare vs Virtual Box. I have windows pro so have Hyper-V bundled. Seems better because allows me to take snapshots of the virtual boxes which the free version of VMWare doesn't easily allow i think. I haven't tried Virtual Box.

I have Manjaro on my system. Can I learn with that?
@tutoriaLinux4 жыл бұрын
You can definitely learn with Manjaro, but you'll just have to change the 'apt' package commands in this course to 'pacman' commands. Should take you about 5 minutes to google the difference, then you're good. All of the underlying Linux stuff is the same across distributions. Cheers and have fun!

Hey, if I'm already using Mint as my OS, but don't really know how it all works, should I create an Ubuntu VM or just do everything in my own Mint?
@tutoriaLinux6 жыл бұрын
Stick with Mint if it's your everyday driver, you'll learn a ton. Since Mint is just Ubuntu with a few extras, you can follow along without any issues!

@@tutoriaLinux Hey, I know this isn't your job but i can't seem to find a fix. I have a Brother HL2300 printer that I'm trying to add to my Mint. I downloaded the drivers from the Brother site and installed them. Everything looks normal under my Printers tab. My laptop sees the printer and all of that. However when I go to print, my printer starts up and I get the notice on my screen that something is printing and then that it is printed but nothing ever actually prints. My printer can do a testpage when I reboot it but not a testpage from the laptop. It's really messing with my emotions since I use it to print PDFs...like How To Install a Printer on Linux. Well thanks for any help or not, and thanks for making this course. JT

i am currently using ubuntu 64bit version 14.04 as my primary OS, i downloaded Virtual box and it will only let me use Ubuntu 32bit. is there a way around this?
@dhh41619 жыл бұрын
+texjoe You should be able to run 64-bit in a Virtual Machine, as long as your host (your current operating system) is 64-bit. However, it doesn't really matter in the end. 64-bit is nice. For multiple reasons. But when you run a Virtual Machine on your current operating system, it shares the resources - of course. So you would never use all the power that a 64-bit system would provide anyway.

Can i use Kali Linux 2016.2 for this courses? I have Kali Linux install like my main system.
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
Sure, Kali is just a modified Ubuntu system, so it's actually exactly what I'm using for these tutorials!

Ty. I have one question. Ctrl dosen't work at all in my Kali Linux 2016.2 Do you know why?
@jorgenitales41288 жыл бұрын
Kali is not meant to run as your main system, it's meant to run as a live usb or inside a virtual machine. It's a special distro for pentesting. You should just get Ubuntu or Debian for your main system, since these are more universal and friendly, and both Ubuntu and Kali are based on Debian anyways, so what you learn on one will work on the others.

Hello, What do you think about debian and linux mint? Thank you again and appreciate your time uploading these videos at no cost! Thanks
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
I used to use Debian a lot for servers. Nice and stable. Now I use a lot of FreeBSD (because it's awesome) and CentOS (at work). Linux Mint is great; I'd recommend it to anyone just starting out with Linux, or for anyone that needs to set up a computer for a family member who is nontechnical.

Sure! Some of the package management commands, package names, and config paths might be slightly different, but all the important stuff in the course is the same no matter which Distro you're using. Have fun!

ubuntu is such a monster these days. Can you please give a tip for a minimal linux server distro for learning? 32bit will do. Thank you
@dhh41619 жыл бұрын
+Gecko You could search for the Ubuntu Minimal image. (About ~40 MB in size.) And just install what you actually want over the internet.) So in other words, this will install the "base" system. And then ask you for what else you might want. (I.e., Desktop Enverionments if wanted, could be KDE, Xfce, LXDE etc.) When it asks you that, you could simply just not install anything - and what you are basically left with, is only the Linux Terminal.

If you have downloaded and installed Ubuntu successfully, there's no need visiting virtualbox.org - synaptic or sudo apt-get install virtualbox will do.
