WoW! We're back on track! I found myself typing along with you and going off and venturing on my own. I was adding users, changing their rights, and deleting them like I was in some sort of auto-pilot mode. The best way to explain it is like I was on my desktop and just navigating through folders with my mouse, except, I wasn't using a mouse. I was using Linux commands!!! Almost felt like second nature!!! Thanks man!!!

Very impressive video. I've worked for companies on and off for many years who add employees and I have always been curious on how it works out. You're only reference to it corresponding to a company type situation is where you mention you delete the user when the employee quits surprised me. This has been going on for tutorial after tutorial where no reference is made to real scenario so the entire vision of what you are doing is lost to those who would learn quicker by scenario. I have faced this same dilemma where I when I teach a mathematical equation to understand it properly I show what it is actually used for in the the field. This results in a concentrated thought form where the theory of the equation is balanced by the pragmatic use of it. First comes the lecture on the equation and then the explanation of the equation. For example, I might give lecture to students on the equations of deceleration and acceleration. The general theory is to explain that you cannot go any faster in space than you have fuel to slow down. I then begin the standard equations to show fuel consumption where the craft is delegated a speed where it can return to base without compromise. Now, your video is very well done and I admit I did not know that you could delegate to a new employee a default shell. This is something that I found valuable and will be using from now on. Again, I give you my sincere compliments. I enjoyed this video very much. As I stated in a previous message to you I enjoy getting all the software in Debian. I think in terms of downloading free what would cost me thousands of dollars.

Nice example - One thing I find confusing in the example: most users seem to have a group named exactly as the user itself. It can be confusing in my mind, if you really need an own group (as opposed to joining an existing group), I would create group _groupX. If a user has a group with the same name, and nobody else joins that group, it's the perfect example of a totally useless group
@tahaait7236 Жыл бұрын
Generally, when you create a new user you can assign the group on which he should belong, no matter what the group is. There are no useless groups. You can create a user with the same name as its group and decide after to add users to that group according to your needs. Generally groups are like profiles that have some roles and responsibilities within the system.

It means that password login is disabled for this user, meaning that the user can't get a login session. These are service accounts, so processes can be started as this user, but they can never get a shell (which is a security risk).
@jackfrost3837 жыл бұрын
Do you have updated vids? As 'Man useradd' shows there is now an updated command which is 'adduser'?
@tutoriaLinux7 жыл бұрын
These aren't out of date -- those basics aren't changing anytime soon! The reason I cover 'useradd' is that you can expect to find it on pretty much every Linux server you ever log into. "adduser" is generally only available on Debian and Ubuntu systems. Although I'm using Ubuntu to demonstrate the course material, I've tried to make things as cross-distro-compatible as possible, just to make sure people have all the tools they need to administrate the wide variety of servers that they'll meet in real life. I hope that helps!

Google is a better place for finding a solution, but it sounds like your BIOS has the virtualization setting turned "off" -- you'll want to reboot the machine, jump into the BIOS settings, and turn on AMD-V (hardware virtualization).

How do I reset my sudo password on Linux? I'm trying to teach myself Linux with your videos hoping to learn and land an IT or cybersecurity job.
@tutoriaLinux4 жыл бұрын
If you're already logged in as root, just run 'passwd.' If you're sudoing from a user who is in the sudoers file, then just do the same (change the password for that user). If you're locked out and have physical access to the machine, mount the hard drive and replace the password hash in /etc/shadow for the user you want to reset the password for.

Yeah, it's a legacy thing. There really used to be plaintext passwords in there, and then crypto happened in the 80s and passwords got moved to /etc/shadow.

@tutoriaLinux7 жыл бұрын
Yes, they're most likely service accounts that your distribution creates for software that comes pre-installed. You can google them individually, along with your distro name, to see what they are. Digging into mysterious parts of your system is a GREAT way to learn. Have fun!
